Wacha, Adams lift the Cardinals to even series versus Reds
CINCINNATI – Michael Wacha out dueled Reds ace Johnny Cueto with a little help from the bullpen and Matt Adams who entered the series hitless. Adams would end his 0-9 season starting slump by blasting a home run that provided the go ahead run as St. Louis defeated Cincinnati, 4-1. The game was played at the great American ball park in Cincinnati where the Reds lost their first match of the season. While things wouldn’t start off promising as Wacha was beat by Todd Frazier for a home run in the first inning he was not rattled. Wacha managed to shut down the Reds for the following 6 1/3 innings.
Wacha wasn’t without struggle as Cincinnati’s potent offense would come within striking distance on numerous occasions however; Wacha worked his way out of these jams and stranded 3 Reds at 3rd base and another at the 2nd. Wacha said that he was able to pitch out of the troubling moments with the Reds in the scoring position and added that the success was attributed by the defense that was behind him.
Adams started the season 0-for -9 with 4 strikeouts so a matchup versus Cincinnati’s ace didn’t look promising. Fortunately Adams would bust out of his slump by seeing Cueto’s 0-1 changeup and sending it to the crowd, much to their dismay with a solo home run onto the netting over the right field netting of the cardinal’s bullpen. This would put up St. Louis 2-1 in the 4th inning and the birds would lead for the rest of the game.
Jhonyy Peralta and Yadier Molina also added RBI singles in the 9th. According to Adams for him to win the matchup he needed to be consistent especially when Cueto lead off with a changeup a pitch that seemed unhittable to Adams during their first series in Chicago.
The Reds have managed to win all four previous games this season by feeding off of their opponent’s bullpen. St. Louis Manager Mike Matheny used five relief pitchers against the final six Cincinnati bats showing no fear after removing Wacha in the 7th inning. The Birds bullpen would reward Matheny’s faith and close the game out with near perfection.
For the Reds, Frazier continues to provide power. He gave the fans something to cheer in spite of a loss in American Ballpark. The Reds also continue to flash their speed and managed to move to 10-for-10 stealing bases on the season even against the highly touted St. Louis catcher Molina. Things are looking good for both clubs, and the division rivalry should be a good one in the NL Central this season.

1. Max Miller
Baseball – preseason etc
Pirate Baseball Starts Season of with a bang
Weather in Parkville around the end of February and start of March is a bit random when baseball season starts firing up. The unexpected snow storm can bring 6inchs of snow over night, and then be 55 and sunny with a light gust of wind the following day.
If you can imagine how difficult baseball practice might be, you could ask former Park Pirate and 8th year head coach Cary Lundy. “We have not been able to practice outside at all this season; we have had to practice and train at the PAC (Parkville Athletic Complex),”says Lundy.
With all the distraction of Missouri weather, the scheduling of the beginning of the season typically heads south to Texas and Arkansas to start getting some competition before conference play.
On February 19, the Pirate team headed to Dallas Texas for a five game road trip. First playing Central Christian and defeating them 4-2, then having a three game matchup against Dallas Christian, blasting them 21-7.Then unexpectedly losses the following game 10-11, but coming back in the 3rd and final match 11-1.Then on Feb 21, Jarvis Christian fell to the Pirates 14-3 down in Dallas.
Park’s offense is something to note this season scoring 60 runs in five games and 22 steals of 24 attempts. The Pirate’s batting average is a solid .367 on the road series’ with the competitors only averaging .248 in Texas.
When asking about these games Coach Lundy replied, “A long road trip is always difficult, but we took advantage of some teams that have been playing quite a bit of ball and took it to them.”
“This season we have a tough schedule, but I believe we can handle it, 16-conference road games this season and we will just have 8-home conference games.” says Lundy
During the Spring Break the baseball team continued its hot streak against several opponents. On 3/3/11 Dakota State came down to contend our Pirates, which resulted them winning 2 games, 6-1 won the first game, then sending the ultimate message by sending Dakota State back home beating them 15-1.
After a few days break, the guys went to Saint Louis to face off against conference rival Harris Stowe. Which resulted in a close loss with a complete meltdown in the 6th inning on defense.
However, the abrupt loss did not discourage the team, instead in the next game, the bat’s starting hitting and slugged the ball all over the field. Leaving Harris Stowe losing game number two (12-0). The Park Pirates ended the long spring break with a phenomenal record of (8-2,2-1 AMC).
The baseball team is working real hard and showing some great development in this early part of the season, while the weather is warming up this might incline you and your friends to come out and check out some of these spectacular athletes at Comfort Field.
*****Upcoming Games*****
Williams Baptist – 3/17 –Walnut Ridge, ARK
Peru State – 3/22 – Comfort Field
Lindenwood 3/23 (2games) – Comfort Field
Benedictine-Springfield - 3/26 – Comfort Field
& 3/27 Benedictine SpringField
