Communication barriers at Sharda Hospital

Introduction
 Communication is an important feature of patient safety and quality of care.
The patient’s rights and need for effective communication is customary in
healthcare organizations.
 Barriers are the factors that hinder or interrupt healthcare communication.
 These barriers to communication include differences in language, cultural
differences and low health literacy. By recognizing and using preventative
measures for these barriers, healthcare staff can communicate effectively.
Standards of Effective Communication
 Complete
 Communicate all relevant information
 Clear
 Convey information that is plainly understood
 Brief
 Communicate the information in a concise manner
 Timely
 Offer and request information in an appropriate timeframe
 Verify authenticity
 Validate or acknowledge information
CONTEXT OF THE COMMUNICATIONAL BARRIER
o Every patient who comes to a hospital has a team of people involved in providing
care throughout their healing process.
o With so many parties involved, it’s understandable that missteps in
communication could occur.
o Communication is a multi-dimensional, multi-factorial phenomenon and a
dynamic, complex process, closely related to the environment in which an
individual’s experiences are shared.
Why is communication important in healthcare ?
The vital role of good communication in healthcare is commonly acknowledged .Gathering
a comprehensive medical history of patients is by no means a simple task for a doctor. It is
equally demanding for the patient to convey her ailments and medical history and to
understand the suggested treatment.
Medical jargon is difficult to understand, and a doctor's status and busy schedule does not
encourage people to ask for further explanations.
Moreover, many of them come from different culture countries or states and have only a
limited education. Communicating with a doctor is even more challenging for these
patients.
However, the language barrier does not prevent these patients from travelling; coming from
countries with very limited health care facilities.
What Sharda provides to communicate between heath
workers and patients ?
It is of no doubt that building an effective relationship is dependent on the
understanding of both sides of the interaction

Conclusion
 Contrary to the prevailing understanding, many foreign patients in Delhi are not
wealthy. Patients coming to Delhi leave their home country because this kind of
affordable health treatment is non-existent there, most of the time they are not well-
informed about language issues.
 To do so, there is a need to acknowledge the full complexity of trans-cultural doctor-
patient communication needs. Interpreters with a high level of language proficiency,
in-depth knowledge of the source culture and a medical background are a major part
of achieving this goal.
 Thus, we can say that effective communication is a building block of successful
organizations. In other words, communication acts as organizational blood

  • 3. Introduction  Communication is an important feature of patient safety and quality of care. The patient’s rights and need for effective communication is customary in healthcare organizations.  Barriers are the factors that hinder or interrupt healthcare communication.  These barriers to communication include differences in language, cultural differences and low health literacy. By recognizing and using preventative measures for these barriers, healthcare staff can communicate effectively.

Standards of Effective Communication  Complete  Communicate all relevant information  Clear  Convey information that is plainly understood  Brief  Communicate the information in a concise manner  Timely  Offer and request information in an appropriate timeframe  Verify authenticity  Validate or acknowledge information

CONTEXT OF THE COMMUNICATIONAL BARRIER o Every patient who comes to a hospital has a team of people involved in providing care throughout their healing process. o With so many parties involved, it’s understandable that missteps in communication could occur. o Communication is a multi-dimensional, multi-factorial phenomenon and a dynamic, complex process, closely related to the environment in which an individual’s experiences are shared.
  • 6. Why is communication important in healthcare ? The vital role of good communication in healthcare is commonly acknowledged .Gathering a comprehensive medical history of patients is by no means a simple task for a doctor. It is equally demanding for the patient to convey her ailments and medical history and to understand the suggested treatment. Medical jargon is difficult to understand, and a doctor's status and busy schedule does not encourage people to ask for further explanations. Moreover, many of them come from different culture countries or states and have only a limited education. Communicating with a doctor is even more challenging for these patients. However, the language barrier does not prevent these patients from travelling; coming from countries with very limited health care facilities.

  • 9. Conclusion  Contrary to the prevailing understanding, many foreign patients in Delhi are not wealthy. Patients coming to Delhi leave their home country because this kind of affordable health treatment is non-existent there, most of the time they are not well- informed about language issues.  To do so, there is a need to acknowledge the full complexity of trans-cultural doctor- patient communication needs. Interpreters with a high level of language proficiency, in-depth knowledge of the source culture and a medical background are a major part of achieving this goal.  Thus, we can say that effective communication is a building block of successful organizations. In other words, communication acts as organizational blood
