This document outlines an agenda for a communications and engagement strategy meeting. It discusses models for communication and engagement like informing, consulting, and involving. It emphasizes the importance of listening, sensing, and changing. It also discusses the rise of social media and how it is driving changes like increased openness, empowered individuals, and democratic engagement. Generations like Gen Y are leading these changes in communication preferences toward more collaboration and sharing over social networks. The implications are that organizations need to start conversations, participate in social media, and accept complexity rather than trying to oversimplify.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
DevOps and Testing slides at DASA ConnectKari Kakkonen

16. Times are changing
Recent communications shift. In the USA:
• 42% communicate mostly via instant messaging
• 11 text messages sent daily on average (from mobiles alone)
• 90+ minutes spent on social networks on average daily
In the UK:
• Leading Europe in adoption of online social networking
• London has the largest most active Facebook group of all
world cities with over 1 million members
• Coupled with this, 70% of UK now accesses the web on a daily
basis (~50% through a broadband connection in their home)
20. The age of conversation
“The characteristics of conversations map to the
conditions for genuine knowledge generation
and sharing: they're unpredictable interactions
among people speaking in their own voice about
something they're interested in. The conversants
implicitly acknowledge that they don't have all
the answers (or else the conversation is really a
lecture) and risk being wrong in front of
someone else.”
David Weinberger
(via http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/0/85DA640F3DB8CBC480256ADC0036A1E8/)
21. Implications
1. Increased openness and transparency inevitable
2. Trend away from top down control and
broadcast to empowered individuals
3. Enabler of change – choice, personalisation,
empowerment, user focus, democratic
engagement
4. Start the conversation, get tooled up and
participate now!
5. Accept and work with complexity, don’t pretend
simple systems and processes alone can fix it
Not fully fledged. More controlled than a true BarCamp but got to start somewhere!
Groups are what they are, get a chance to challenge and work on each element, but if you’re really unhappy or have enough of one group, just move!
And try and have fun!
How many people on Facebook?
How many people use RSS?
Ever made a video or podcast and uploaded it?
The people in this room need to be at the forefront of this technology…
Changing world and changing technologies leading this.
Less about gen y per se, but a shift in the mode of production internally from classic fordist hierarchical organisations to more networked, open and transparent organisations, the world of Wikinomics.
Having said that when you hear stats like 17.5 new blog posts every second and this isn’t driven by gen y (yet!) you sense something big is happening and will be even more so in years to come.
How many people on Facebook?
How many people use RSS?
Ever made a video or podcast and uploaded it?
The people in this room need to be at the forefront of this technology…
And 1 in 4 8-11yr old INTERNET USERS (not all population)
90% 15-25 year olds have visited their socal network in the past month
Ofcom research to understand people’s use of social networking within wide media context
A bit about what each means especially important being notions of sharing, free content, open… while protecting the ‘crown jewels’.
Pushing at the boundaries
So in terms of the future of this workforce people are now discussing the move not only from fordist hierarchy to networked organsations but also knowledge worker to conversational worker.
Gen Y the kings of this – although may be the role of others to help manage and direct these abilities to make best business use of them.
Significant implications for the nature of organisations and the look of the economy (although hierarchies will always exist in my opinion as even gen y appreciate some order of this kind - not just social influencers/followers but organisational ones will persist to)
As a result of the use of this disruptive technologies and real benefits to arise (networks, familiarity etc). Embrace it and control the agenda rather than have it run away from you (true for individuals and companies). Help establish new ways of being/working.
EG development of Vendor RM – own your own data and share it when, where and how you wish rather than as per the wishes of the organisations you are interacting with. Also key for organisations within this is they are divesting themselves of risk and cost by not owning and managing data in traditional way
Working together to develop a new “netiquette” – public profile and within organisation
Enable gen y in organisation – whether corporate tools or use of external ones. But also need for social tools to be re-thought in relation to security, with Ofcom found most found manipulation of privacy settings difficult. Make privacy a feature/opportunity not a bug.
Linked to 2 but also things like security settings in online etc. Perhaps a role for gaming or developing some fun tools to appeal to a generation driving the merging of home and work and looking for fun in everything they do. Help manage the multiple personalities that we all have.
EG backlash against the notion of ‘friend’ including people like Matt Jones of Dopplr, seeing this as too blunt and tools need to be more nuanced in regards to Ed’s public/private/personal/political matrix
Understand how things work, don’t try and hold back the tide but go with and use expertise to help make these spaces work better rather than try to ignore or impose and old way of doing things on people who won’t listen
