Barack Obama was born in 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii and was raised mostly by his grandmother. He went on to graduate from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. Obama worked as a civil rights lawyer and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004, becoming the fifth African American senator in U.S. history. Obama announced his candidacy for president in 2007 and was elected in 2008, becoming the first African American president.
