Barack Obama was born in 1961 in Hawaii and spent part of his childhood in Indonesia before returning to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. He graduated from Columbia University in 1983 and Harvard Law School in 1991. Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996 and later the U.S. Senate in 2004. He announced his candidacy for U.S. president in 2007 and was sworn in as the 44th president in 2009, becoming the first African American president. As president, Obama displayed leadership traits such as self-confidence, integrity, and caring for others.
