Our Mission
Bancroft’s mission is to ensure that every person is
given opportunities for lifelong learning and fulfillment.
We do this by altering perceptions, and by supporting

TOGETHER... we are transforming lives
For 128 years, Bancroft has helped people make extraordinary gains. We’ve enabled people
who were once confined to institutions to blossom and live full lives in the community.
We’ve helped children with severe behavior problems learn to control their outbursts – and
open themselves to worlds of possibilities for happy, productive lives.
Such transformations occur every day at Bancroft. And that only inspires us to do more.
But to do so, we too must transform. We must strengthen ourselves in various ways.
During the last year, we developed a comprehensive “vision” for our future, with input from
those we support, families, staff, board members and others.
This exciting new vision is designed to guide us toward the brightest possible future, on
behalf of those we support:

those with intellectual and developmental challenges

By 2014 our distinct ability to deliver high-quality, individualized services in modern living, learning
and working environments will exceed stakeholder expectations and secure Bancroft as the
region’s elite provider of services to people with intellectual disabilities, autism and brain injuries.

and acquired brain injuries in achieving their life goals

We will take great care to move our mission forward in a way that preserves those qualities that
continue to make Bancroft an extraordinary community.

as valued and respected members of our world.

In fact, such changes have already begun – and lives are transforming! For instance, we’re
creating modern environments through new, fully accessible homes on our Mullica Hill
Campus, and bringing state-of-the-art learning and communication technology into our
classrooms. The result: people are gaining greater independence and a better quality of life.
In addition, we ended the year with positive financial results, and continued to expand our
services to provide greater options for people who need our help.

ON THE COVER: Members of the Bancroft “family”

From the people we support and their loved ones, to our staff, board members and donors, we
are the Bancroft family – dedicated to the organization’s mission and our shared future.
IN PORTRAIT PHOTO, FROM LEFT:

Middle row: Jeffrey Swartz (board member), Peter Fisher, Wayne Hefner (staff), Valerie
Carmack (staff), Addison Carmack. Front: Jaden Ambroise, Eddie Smith.

Of course, there is still much work to do.
As you read through these pages, I hope you will be inspired by these stories of
transformation, just as I am. Each person we help is a living reminder of how important
our mission truly is. Please know that you play a vital role in these successes. We can only
change lives if we work together!
On behalf of each person and family we help, thank you for your support.

developmental disabilities

“

Jaden is learning communication
and social skills, which will
help him in all aspects of life –
including in the workplace
one day.

”

– Kara Roman, Jaden’s teacher

Santos-Borges are pals.

Nine-year-old Jaden Ambroise is
happy and easy-going, according to
his dad. But just a few years ago –
before Jaden came to Bancroft – he
was often unhappy and upset. With
limited ways to communicate his
needs and desires, he would scream
and bite his finger in frustration.
At The Bancroft School, Jaden has
learned many words and can tell
people what he wants. He even won
an award for most-improved student.

Moreover, due to his autism, Jaden
once had little tolerance for new
people and places.
“Now he’s fine when we take him
somewhere new and he’s around other children,” says Jaden’s dad, Schiller.
“He definitely has a brighter future.”
“Jaden has transformed,” says his
teacher, Kara Roman. “He can now
ask for things, and say if he doesn’t
like something. He’s really come out
of his shell.”

out of control. When he didn’t get
his way, he would punch, kick, bite
and throw things. He even refused
to go to school most days.
But in 2007 Eddie entered the Lindens, Bancroft’s residential program

disabilities and severe behavioral

challenges. And today, Eddie has
transformed so much that he’s able

to live in a Bancroft-supervised
home in the community. He attends
The Bancroft School and works in
the campus convenience store.
“I like going to school,” says 17-yearold Eddie, who also enjoys bikeriding and playing the card game
Uno. “I feel good about my life.”
“Eddie has come a long way,” says
his mom, Suzanne Clemente-Smith.
“Bancroft has done a very wonderful job for him.”

”

“My children and my family are the
most important things in my life,”
says the mom with developmental
disabilities.
Still, Sharmina needed guidance to
help both herself and her young
son and daughter. She found it
at Bancroft’s unique parenting
program, at The Walker Center in
suburban Philadelphia.

Today, Sharmina is “more confident
and more vocal in advocating for
her kids,” says staff member Virgia
Lemon. She’s taking classes to get
her high-school diploma while
aggressively looking for a job.
She says she’s transformed, and is
learning to be a better mom.
“I’m making goals for myself,”
states Sharmina, who dreams of
being a nurse. “I’m striving for
where I want to go in life… I can’t
wait to be more successful.”

Doctors said Lee would never walk
again. Today he’s winning races at
Special Olympics! He has a great
perspective on life, and now works
to help others.

After a 1990 car crash, Lee Miller
was left with a brain injury and a
wide range of challenges. He was
unable to walk, and was angry and
withdrawn.
But today, Lee is a new man: he’s
an advocate and public speaker on
brain-injury issues, an athlete and
more. He’s gained a positive outlook, and enjoys socializing again.
While Lee continues to need assis-

tance and rehabilitation, “it doesn’t
mean my life has to stop,” he says.
Lee started out on Bancroft’s Mullica Hill Campus, and has continued
to progress to more independent
settings. Today, he lives by himself
in a Bancroft-supervised apartment,
and is an active and productive
member of his community.
Says Lee: “Bancroft has always
been there if I’ve needed support.”

Bancroft is an incredible organization and, after serving three years as a board
member, I’m honored to have been named board chairman in April.
As president and CEO of Kennedy Health System, one of the region’s largest healthcare
providers, I was already familiar with Bancroft and the excellent work it does.

Since I’ve become more directly involved, I’m even more impressed. And one of the

At the board level, we continually strive to challenge each other’s thinking, as well as
to challenge management, in order to assure that we’re well-prepared for the future.
For example, how do our families and other “stakeholders” define quality? And what
is the board’s specific role in achieving Bancroft’s vision, in support of our mission? (For
our new vision statement, please see Toni Pergolin’s message on page 1.)

¢ Individual Support

As an organization, our sole purpose is to better the lives of those who seek our help.
Each of us – from board members to administrators, clinicians to direct-care staff –
must understand our responsibilities, and hold ourselves and one another accountable
for achieving our goals. That’s the only way to assure Bancroft will be here in the
future, for the families who rely on us today and those who will need us tomorrow.
I’m confident that we’re on our way to achieving our vision to become the region’s
elite service-provider in our field. As an elite provider, we are motivated to do our very
best, each and every day, to provide the most effective services. We hope this vision
will also inspire you to continue supporting us for many years to come.
Through the use of best practices and a solid commitment to each person who comes to
us for services, we are transforming lives. And we are transforming our world. Join us!

Transforming to achieve our vision
PERSON-CENTERED

modern facilities

Our Promise
Together, we are moving toward an exciting future
for Bancroft and the people we support.
Our vision is clear: By 2014, we will be the
region’s elite provider of services to people
with neurological disabilities. We will achieve
this vision by providing high-quality, individualized
services in modern living, learning and working
environments; services that exceed the expectations
of our stakeholders, from the people we support
and their families to funding agencies.
At the same time, we will preserve the qualities
that make the Bancroft community so special:
passion; caring; commitment.
We are well on our way: We’ve begun transforming
our Mullica Hill Campus (pictured) to a fully
accessible, modern facility; we’re implementing
the use of assistive technologies – which instill
greater independence – at a rapid pace; and we’re
focusing more than ever on the individual needs
and desires of the people we support.

CREATING MODERN ENVIRONMENTS The empty field pictured in last year’s annual report has
been transformed into this state-of-the-art residence on our Mullica Hill (N.J.) Campus. The campus

Bancroft Annual Report 2011

  • 1. © 2011 Bancroft | All rights reserved HEADQUARTERS 425 Kings Highway East | P.O. Box 20 Haddonfield, NJ 08033-0018 | USA 856 429 0010 www.bancroft.org
  • 2. Our Mission Bancroft’s mission is to ensure that every person is given opportunities for lifelong learning and fulfillment. We do this by altering perceptions, and by supporting TOGETHER... we are transforming lives For 128 years, Bancroft has helped people make extraordinary gains. We’ve enabled people who were once confined to institutions to blossom and live full lives in the community. We’ve helped children with severe behavior problems learn to control their outbursts – and open themselves to worlds of possibilities for happy, productive lives. Such transformations occur every day at Bancroft. And that only inspires us to do more. But to do so, we too must transform. We must strengthen ourselves in various ways. During the last year, we developed a comprehensive “vision” for our future, with input from those we support, families, staff, board members and others. This exciting new vision is designed to guide us toward the brightest possible future, on behalf of those we support: those with intellectual and developmental challenges By 2014 our distinct ability to deliver high-quality, individualized services in modern living, learning and working environments will exceed stakeholder expectations and secure Bancroft as the region’s elite provider of services to people with intellectual disabilities, autism and brain injuries. and acquired brain injuries in achieving their life goals We will take great care to move our mission forward in a way that preserves those qualities that continue to make Bancroft an extraordinary community. as valued and respected members of our world. In fact, such changes have already begun – and lives are transforming! For instance, we’re creating modern environments through new, fully accessible homes on our Mullica Hill Campus, and bringing state-of-the-art learning and communication technology into our classrooms. The result: people are gaining greater independence and a better quality of life. In addition, we ended the year with positive financial results, and continued to expand our services to provide greater options for people who need our help. ON THE COVER: Members of the Bancroft “family” From the people we support and their loved ones, to our staff, board members and donors, we are the Bancroft family – dedicated to the organization’s mission and our shared future. IN PORTRAIT PHOTO, FROM LEFT: Back row: Caroline Eggerding (staff), Randee Rubenstein (parent), Ray Welsh (parent, board member), Ari Rubenstein, Kia Dreggs (staff), Bill Wills (parent), Sharmina Ransome. Middle row: Jeffrey Swartz (board member), Peter Fisher, Wayne Hefner (staff), Valerie Carmack (staff), Addison Carmack. Front: Jaden Ambroise, Eddie Smith. Of course, there is still much work to do. As you read through these pages, I hope you will be inspired by these stories of transformation, just as I am. Each person we help is a living reminder of how important our mission truly is. Please know that you play a vital role in these successes. We can only change lives if we work together! On behalf of each person and family we help, thank you for your support. TONI PERGOLIN, PRESIDENT, CHIEF EXECUTIVE 1
  • 3. Transformations …in students with autism and other developmental disabilities “ Jaden is learning communication and social skills, which will help him in all aspects of life – including in the workplace one day. ” – Kara Roman, Jaden’s teacher Jaden (left) and classmate Edgar Santos-Borges are pals. 2 Nine-year-old Jaden Ambroise is happy and easy-going, according to his dad. But just a few years ago – before Jaden came to Bancroft – he was often unhappy and upset. With limited ways to communicate his needs and desires, he would scream and bite his finger in frustration. At The Bancroft School, Jaden has learned many words and can tell people what he wants. He even won an award for most-improved student. Moreover, due to his autism, Jaden once had little tolerance for new people and places. “Now he’s fine when we take him somewhere new and he’s around other children,” says Jaden’s dad, Schiller. “He definitely has a brighter future.” “Jaden has transformed,” says his teacher, Kara Roman. “He can now ask for things, and say if he doesn’t like something. He’s really come out of his shell.” Transformations at The Bancroft School JADEN AMBROISE: NEW SKILLS MEAN A BRIGHTER FUTURE 3
  • 4. Transformations EDDIE SMITH: POSITIVE BEHAVIOR BRINGS REWARDING LIFE “ Eddie was in and out of different As an adolescent on the autism special-needs schools because of spectrum, Eddie Smith had spiraled his behaviors. Now he maintains a job; he follows instructions and maintains his independence. – Eddie’s dad, Ed Smith ” out of control. When he didn’t get his way, he would punch, kick, bite and throw things. He even refused to go to school most days. But in 2007 Eddie entered the Lindens, Bancroft’s residential program for youth with both developmental disabilities and severe behavioral Eddie (right) with staff member Brandon Saunders. 4 challenges. And today, Eddie has transformed so much that he’s able to live in a Bancroft-supervised home in the community. He attends The Bancroft School and works in the campus convenience store. “I like going to school,” says 17-yearold Eddie, who also enjoys bikeriding and playing the card game Uno. “I feel good about my life.” “Eddie has come a long way,” says his mom, Suzanne Clemente-Smith. “Bancroft has done a very wonderful job for him.” Transformations in the Pediatric Residential continuum …in students with severe behavioral challenges 5
  • 5. Transformations …in parents with intellectual and developmental disabilities “ Sharmina has changed drastically For Sharmina Ransome, it’s all about the kids. since she came to Bancroft. She’s calmer and more proactive; she seeks out information to make sure her children’s needs are met. – Staff member Virgia Lemon Sharmina and children Anaje (left) and Jiyon. 6 ” “My children and my family are the most important things in my life,” says the mom with developmental disabilities. Still, Sharmina needed guidance to help both herself and her young son and daughter. She found it at Bancroft’s unique parenting program, at The Walker Center in suburban Philadelphia. Today, Sharmina is “more confident and more vocal in advocating for her kids,” says staff member Virgia Lemon. She’s taking classes to get her high-school diploma while aggressively looking for a job. She says she’s transformed, and is learning to be a better mom. “I’m making goals for myself,” states Sharmina, who dreams of being a nurse. “I’m striving for where I want to go in life… I can’t wait to be more successful.” Transformations at the Walker Center SHARMINA RANSOME: LEARNING TO HELP HERSELF AND HER CHILDREN 7
  • 6. Transformations …in adults with acquired brain injuries “ Doctors said Lee would never walk again. Today he’s winning races at Special Olympics! He has a great perspective on life, and now works to help others. ” – Staff member Bill Lewis Lee (right) with his Special Olympics medals and staff member Jeanne Bozicek. 8 After a 1990 car crash, Lee Miller was left with a brain injury and a wide range of challenges. He was unable to walk, and was angry and withdrawn. But today, Lee is a new man: he’s an advocate and public speaker on brain-injury issues, an athlete and more. He’s gained a positive outlook, and enjoys socializing again. While Lee continues to need assis- tance and rehabilitation, “it doesn’t mean my life has to stop,” he says. Lee started out on Bancroft’s Mullica Hill Campus, and has continued to progress to more independent settings. Today, he lives by himself in a Bancroft-supervised apartment, and is an active and productive member of his community. Says Lee: “Bancroft has always been there if I’ve needed support.” Transformations in Brain Injury Services LEE MILLER: A NEW LIFE AFTER A BRAIN INJURY 9
  • 7. DONORS “ We recognize and thank our donors for their contributions made during fiscal year 2011 (July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011). I give to Bancroft because I know that it makes a difference in someone’s life. –anonymous donor ” The individuals, corporations and organizations named have generously supported Bancroft by sponsoring or attending a special event, making a gift to the annual fund or responding to a special request with a grant. Our vision is clear: By 2014, we will be the region’s elite provider of services to people with neurological disabilities. We will achieve this vision by providing high-quality, individualized services in modern living, learning and working environments; services that exceed the expectations of our stakeholders, from the people we support and their families to funding agencies. At the same time, we will preserve the qualities that make the Bancroft community so special: passion; caring; commitment. We are well on our way: We’ve begun transforming our Mullica Hill Campus (pictured) to a fully accessible, modern facility; we’re implementing the use of assistive technologies – which instill greater independence – at a rapid pace; and we’re focusing more than ever on the individual needs and desires of the people we support. employer of choice Together, we can achieve this transformative vision for a strong and rewarding future, for all of those who need us.
