2. As CEO of Total NutriCare, Mohsen “Max”
Motamedian oversees the development of
individualized holistic nutrition strategies for clients.
Under Mohsen Motamedian's leadership, an on-staff
nutritionist formulates these strategies using such
assessments as the small intestinal bacterial
overgrowth (SIBO) breath test.
Patients who present with cramping, bloating, gas,
and diarrhea may have a condition known as small
intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome. When the
small intestine produces more bacteria than the small
amount necessary to facilitate digestion, these
bacteria produce an excess of methane and hydrogen
gas.
3. This gas enters the blood and ultimately travels to
the lungs, where the breath carries it out of the body.
The SIBO test measures the amount of gas that
comes out on the breath. The patient prepares with
12 hours of a very particular diet, which clears the
body of food that encourages bacterial growth, and a
subsequent 12-hour fasting period. He or she then
ingests a sugar solution, which reacts with
fermenting bacteria to produce the gases that the
patient then exhales. A series of breathalyzer tests
over a three-hour period measures the amount of gas
exhaled and reveals if there are in fact too many
bacteria growing in the small intestine.
