Language Arts Math Science Social Studies (pages 13-17) The state of California has set these standards that all students in second grade should achieve before leaving the grade level. It is my goal in second grade to cover and teach all standards to all students.  Page 5 Standards
Our Report Card follows the state standards for Language Arts and Math.  Students are expected to be Progressing in all standards throughout the year.  By the end of the year students, will be expected to know all of the standards in Language Arts and Math to pass to third grade.  Page 5- Overhead Report Card
Second grade students are required to take a STAR test for the state of California sometime in May.  Since this is the first time students are tested in this manner we will prepare them with test prep in class and at home.  You will see many of these reports coming home.  STAR Tests
Homework is given on Friday and due the following Friday. Spelling words Reading log- Families should read a minimum of 20 minutes each evening.  The reading may be done by the students are family members. (fluency and accuracy) Newsletter Practice of skills taught in class Page 6 Homework
Students will visit the Rodeo Hills library each month. Students will be able to check out books from the classroom on a daily basis beginning in October.  I need a volunteer to help this process.  They will check out a book at their reading level each night they return the previous book.  Page 7 Library
Please consider ordering books from Scholastic Catalogs that will be sent home about 5 times per year.  These books are very cheap compared to book stores. Books are leveled and students can select books at their level.  Book Orders
We will go on a few educational and fun field trips this year.  The first field trip will be to Smith Family Farm on Friday, October 22.  We visit a real working farm to discover life cycles.  Other field trips include: Jelly Belly Factory San Francisco Zoo Exploratorium Page 7 Field Trips

There will be four fun and educational family nights for Rodeo Hills students throughout the year from 6:00-7:30.  These events are wonderful to build parent, teacher, student relationships. UA Time During this time students work on assigned Language Arts activities: workbook, reading, writing, phonics, etc.  These are called Must Do’s because they have to be completed.  Then they are given a list of choice activities called May Do’s.  These include computer, listening center, Bing-o, language arts games.  Practice Book
Writer’s Workshop During this time students take their work through the publishing process including writing, editing, publishing (typing), and illustrating.  Students learn about phonics, writing, and computer skills. Spiral Notebook
AR Reading Students read books at their assigned reading levels.  They are able to take quizzes on the books they read.  This helps build comprehension and helps keep students accountable for reading. Red Folder

Board Math During Board Math students review math concepts in these areas: place value, operations, money, fractions, time, algebra and functions, measurement, and statistics. Show Board Math Sample
Math Workbook and Games During this time students work in Houghton Mifflin Math Workbooks and/or play math games. California Math
PE Physical Education will be held Monday-Thursday from 1:45-2:10.  Our class has developed an exercise routine and then they will enjoy games and other physical activities.
Science Science is planned on Wednesdays after PE.  Science topics include Balance, Forces and Motion, Life Cycles (Animal and Plant), Fossils, Rocks, Magnets,
Technology As you can see this class was set up with the most current technology.  We will have 15 student computers, a document camera, and a smart board.  This technology was donated by the city of Hercules and is used throughout the day to teach students effectively.
