Azure was announced in October 2008 and released on 1 February 2010 as Windows Azure, before being renamed to Microsoft Azure on 25 March 2014. Along with Amazon Web Services Azure is considered a leader in the IAAS field.
Microsoft Azure is an open and flexible cloud platform that enables you to quickly build, deploy, and manage applications across a global network of Microsoft-managed datacenters. You can build applications using any language, tool, or framework. And you can integrate your public cloud applications with your existing IT environment.
This definition tells us that Microsoft Azure is a cloud platform, which means you can use it for running your business applications, services, and workloads in the cloud. But it also includes some key words that tell us even more:
Open Microsoft Azure provides a set of cloud services that allow you to build and deploy cloud-based applications using almost any programming language, framework, or tool.
Flexible Microsoft Azure provides a wide range of cloud services that can let you do everything from hosting your company’s website to running big SQL databases in the cloud. It also includes different features that can help deliver high performance and low latency for cloud-based applications.
Microsoft-managed Microsoft Azure services are currently hosted in several datacenters spread across the United States, Europe, and Asia. These datacenters are managed by Microsoft and provide expert global support on a 24x7x365 basis.
Compatible Cloud applications running on Microsoft Azure can easily be integrated with on-premises IT environments that utilize the Microsoft Windows Server platform.
It provides both PAAS and IAAS services and supports many different programming languages, tools and frameworks, including both Microsoft-specific and third-party software and systems.

The Internet of your things by Jan TielensITProceed
The Internet of Things can make a difference to a business right now, but it can also pose challenges since it can seem overwhelming, complicated and expensive. In this session we’ll demystify IoT and go over the building blocks of a typical IoT solution. We’ll focus on the work that Microsoft has been doing both on the services side with the IoT Suite in Azure; as on the devices side with Windows 10 IoT Core on for example the Raspberry Pi.

Azure Operation Management Suite - security and complianceAsaf Nakash
Today’s IT Security and Operations teams are tasked with managing highly complex, hybrid-cloud, cross-platform systems which are increasingly vulnerable to a growing number of sophisticated cyber-attacks. With this, IT Operations teams have a requirement to identify any threats to their environment as soon as possible to mitigate damages, as well as continue to cost-effectively meet SLAs.

Azure SQL Database (SQL DB) is a database-as-a-service (DBaaS) that provides nearly full T-SQL compatibility so you can gain tons of benefits for new databases or by moving your existing databases to the cloud. Those benefits include provisioning in minutes, built-in high availability and disaster recovery, predictable performance levels, instant scaling, and reduced overhead. And gone will be the days of getting a call at 3am because of a hardware failure. If you want to make your life easier, this is the presentation for you.

Azure SQL usage seems to be easy and straightforward, but there are set of steps to make it truly reliable and properly secured. This talk is about following three important topics.
IaaS is essential part of Azure and proper set of the environment scripts can really save the day, also you can do useful stuff with T-SQL instead of Azure portal.
Are you ready for disaster, are your team take a proper drill? I`m sure you do, but in case you need a few tips and check list - you will obtain it. Usually, proper monitoring(including network impact), profiling and alerts are introduced after the first production issue.
Security seems to be hot topic these days and there are few steps to secure your Elastic cluster proper way, plain Azure SQL Server firewall might be not enough. Security measures overview with best practices, vNet, user roles isolation, encryption at rest, secret maintenance with KeyVault, Security center.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

And finally we’ll talk about connecting cloud services – bridging between PaaS and IaaS
Store, Backup, Recover
Let’s first understand why Cloud makes for a great storage option? A typical organization increases their data storage by 50-60% every year (source:IDC). But only a small portion of the data is frequently accessed or used. So using purely on-premises storage like SAN/NAS solutions for that data is expensive. Forrester’s study placed a cost of about $95 per GB of data per year for an on-premises SAN solution which is 4X the cost of putting a GB in the Cloud. Of course, not all data can be put in the Cloud for performance or compliance reasons but where you can, using Azure for all backup and archived data, as well as less frequently accessed primary data makes a great business case.
