Thousands of services work in concert to deliver millions of hours of video streams to Netflix customers every day. These applications vary in size, function, and technology, but they all make use of the Netflix network to communicate. Understanding the interactions between these services is a daunting challenge both because of the sheer volume of traffic and the dynamic nature of deployments. In this talk, we’ll first discuss why Netflix chose Amazon Kinesis Streams over other data streaming solutions like Kafka to address these challenges at scale. We’ll then dive deep into how Netflix uses Amazon Kinesis Streams to enrich network traffic logs and identify usage patterns in real time. Lastly, we will cover how Netflix uses this system to build comprehensive dependency maps, increase network efficiency, and improve failure resiliency. From this talk, you’ll take away techniques and processes that you can apply to your large-scale networks and derive real-time, actionable insights.

Rudy Martin, VP of Operations at Trustpilot, discusses how Trustpilot has evolved its infrastructure on AWS over time. Originally, Trustpilot had overprovisioned EC2 instances in monolithic stacks with minimal automation. It has since moved to a microservices architecture using services like ECS, Lambda, ELB, RDS, Redshift and benefits from AWS's auto-scaling capabilities. Future plans include multi-region deployment to Europe, further embracing serverless technologies, and decoupling databases. The Reinvent 2016 conference hosted by Amazon Web Services included keynotes, over 400 sessions across 4 locations over 5 days. New services and updates were announced across compute, analytics, database, developer tools, artificial intelligence, monitoring, migration, mobile, containers, and lambda. Significant announcements included new instance types, elastic GPUs, IPv6 support for EC2, Athena for querying S3 data with SQL, Glue for data integration and transformations, and expanded capabilities for many existing services like Lambda, CloudFront, and Snowmobile for large data transfers.

AWS re:Invent 2016: Searching Inside Video at Petabyte Scale Using Spot (WIN307)

Video is a "last-mile problem" for search technology. Unlike webpages, documents, and email, content in videos has traditionally been impossible to search. Recent advances in automated speech and text recognition, however, let businesses and universities search inside video assets as easily as inside textual content. In this session, you'll learn how Panopto is using AWS to solve the video-search problem at scale, while saving over 50% in operating costs by taking advantage of Spot instances. We discuss the cross-platform architecture that combines Windows and Linux to provide cost-effective video processing and search indexing. We also dive deep into scaling Spot elastically based on user demand, handling fallback situations when instances are revoked, and using the Spot bidding process to optimize cost structure. Finally, we discuss future plans to reduce operating costs even further through Spot fleets and grid processing.

At re:Invent 2016 AWS announced several revolutionary ways to move data into and out of the AWS Cloud in large batches, so you can retire servers, racks, and data centers and embark on new projects faster. Two of these new services are AWS Snowmobile and AWS Snowball Edge. Snowmobile cuts cloud data migration projects from years to weeks in time with a 45 foot truck with 100PB of capacity. AWS Snowball Edge is a petabyte-scale data transfer service with portable storage and compute capabilities. It transports up to 100TB of data in a ruggedized, weather resistant, rack mountable, shippable device with the same embedded cryptography and security as the original Snowball. OYE! is a natural language processing solution that analyzes social media conversations in English, Spanish and Spanglish to provide insights about Hispanic consumers to brands. It can identify key details about how audiences discuss brands and provide recommendations to create targeted campaigns. The report analyzed over 10,000 Hispanic conversations about Netflix Original dramas between February and March 2016. It found that Narcos and Orange is the New Black had the highest proportions of Hispanic mentions, while conversations were mostly in Spanish. Sentiment was most positive for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, while Narcos saw the most negative comments. Discussions were heavily concentrated in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and Houston.

Various Netflix batch jobs and an increasing number of service applications use containers for their processing.
