Who are we? Room 7 - Totara 28 students Year 5/6 students 18 boys / 10 girls We are smart!
Introduction Tinwald School year 5/6 students first began using AVAILLL last year. The teachers read about Methven Primary School using it in the newspaper and went to have a look. The teachers had a training session with Jo Veale.
Who uses it? We have 3 year 5/6 classes this year. Each class will use AVAILLL for one term. We are the first class to use our new kit! Thank you for supporting us! We have been using it since the beginning of the term.
When? We usually do our AVAILLL session at this time of the day. We have to try and block out the sun as much as we can! Each session goes for about one hour.
How does it work? Usually we begin by setting up our reading books for a lesson. We spend time ReadWatching* the movie. There is always an activity to do to keep us watching the subtitles. We mark our work together. Sometimes we read parts of the book. The activities have mostly been the same for each of the movies.
What is ReadWatching? ReadWatching is… Reading the subtitles while watching the movie Your eyes still have to watch what is happening in the movie It takes about 20 minutes to learn how to do this.
What skills do we work on? This kit that we are using helps us to practice: Reading fast Scanning for information Spelling Fluency (good sounding reading) Vocabulary Reading for long periods of time
What do we like about AVAILLL? Watching the movies Relaxing We get to learn new reading skills It improves our reading skills Makes reading fun You learn in a fun way You learn while watching movies! You can do it at home It helps you to read faster
How will we know that we are improving?
Today’s lesson Today we are beginning a new movie called “Because of Winn Dixie” The first activity is called ~ The Last Word We have been improving at this activity
