The Google Driverless Car uses sensors like LIDAR and cameras along with Google Maps and artificial intelligence software to navigate roads autonomously. It can steer, accelerate, brake and make decisions to safely transport passengers to their destinations without human input. The project is led by Sebastian Thrun and has driven over 140,000 miles with only occasional human intervention needed. Fully autonomous vehicles could be ready for commercial use within the next 3 to 5 years.
