Smart Meters
A modern house or building is a consumer of multiple utilities/services. It is essential to meter and bill
such services. Till now analog meters have been used or in some case individual digital meters have
been used.
But today we are at the convergence of such metering needs. Where we are talking about metering a
combination of
1. Electricity
2. Water
3. Gas
4. Heat
At a basic minimum. Some countries or cities also meter drainage and sewage outflow from a house or
office.
Besides this there is another convergence taking place in homes. That of
1. [IP] Telephony
2. [IP] TV
3. Internet
While those are gradually converging into one. They are not metered at the home, but rather centrally
from the ISP or Telecom’s systems.
Smart Meters also require an internet uplink to work. So eventually we might see that these two
different convergences might actually converge into one category.

Automatski systems measure metrics every 30 minutes.
The capital cost of such meters if charged pro-rata using a time horizon of 10 or 20 years, which is paid
along with the monthly bills. It varies from 79c for 20 years to $2.19 for 10 years, in some cities it is $0
and some places 200 pounds
Total capital costs per meter, including installation, range from as little as $81 to as high as $532. The
average is $221.
Smart Meters offer the following benefits
1. Automatic outage detection and restoration: Smart meters quickly notify your electricity
distributor if your power is out. The problem can be located faster, repair crews can be allocated
in a priority manner and repairs can begin sooner.
2. Remote meter readings: Your meter is remotely read, eliminating the need for manual meter
reading. This means you will no longer receive estimated bills.

3. SMS notifications of power outages: Victorian electricity customers can register for a free SMS
service to notify of major electricity outages. You will receive information about outages in your
area and the estimated restoration time. For more information, contact your distributor.
4. In-home display: You can monitor your own usage in almost real time using web portals and in-
home displays. This means you can have more control over your daily energy use.
5. Energy alerts: You can set up your system to receive messages warning you of excessive energy
consumption, giving you the opportunity to take action.
6. Cheaper costs when moving house: Power companies can now remotely turn power on or off,
which means that disconnection and reconnection fees have dropped from about $25 to
between $5 and $8.
7. Smoother switching between retailers: You no longer need to wait for your next scheduled
meter reading to switch retailers. Connecting, disconnecting or switching to a new electricity
retailer is cheaper and easier because you can get onto a better plan and start saving more
quickly.
8. Flexible pricing: On a flexible pricing plan the cost of electricity changes according to what time
of the day you use it. The technology of smart meters has made it likely that other innovative
pricing options will also become available in the future.
9. Smart appliances / smart thermostats: You can time when your appliances will start, or turn
them on remotely. A smart thermostat takes all the guesswork out of keeping your house at the
right temperature.
10. Solar: You can easily monitor what percentages of solar and mains electricity you are using and
change your usage patterns to take advantage of your solar generation.
The above does not reflect all the energy efficiency and demand response benefits that smart meters
can provide, including savings from load shifting on time-of-use rates.
