Tihar Jail in New Delhi, India has a large security system to monitor its 11,872 inmates across its 400 acre complex of 9 prisons. The system includes 1,280 PTZ cameras, video encoders and decoders, and a central control room running VIDOS video management software on 14 client stations and 2 servers. It also uses additional systems like a visitor management system, prison management system, video conferencing between courts and jails, and mobile phone jammers.

It is located in Tihar village,
approximately 7 km from Chanakya
Puri, to the west of New Delhi, India.
Originally, Tihar was a maximum
security prison run by the State of
Punjab. In 1966 control was
transferred to the National Capital
Territory of Delhi. Beginning in 1984,
additional facilities were
constructed, and the complex
became Tihar Prison.

8. OTHER AUTOMATION SYSTEMS USED IN TIHAR JAIL
Visitor Management System
Delhi prisons receives around 2000 visitors on daily basis
formeeting with the prisoners. To manage this large
number of visitors, Visitor Management System software
is developed which can register the visits of friends and
relatives of a prisoner 10 days in advance on centralized
telephone numbers 28520202 (Tihar) and 27291501
(Rohini). This system saves the time of
visitors as well as informs the prisoners in
advance about his meeting. Due to introduction of this
system complete transparency has been obtained.
Prison Management System
Delhi Prison in association with NIC has developed a unique
Comprehensive Query-based system software for effective Prison
Management called Prison Management System (PMS). This
system keeps comprehensive information about prisoners, their
court cases and their lodging pattern. It also records, tracks and
monitors the movement of prisoners and the action taken on
their court hearing.

9. Video-Conferencing System
Video conferencing facility has been setup
between Tihar/Rohini jails with District Courts at
Tis Hazari, New Delhi, Karkardooma and Rohini.
This facility is used for extension of judicial
remands and trials in some cases. This has
strengthened prison security and has saved
manpower, equipment and transportation.
Mobile phone jammers
These jammers block the communication in
GSM 900/1800 and CDMS Band and also block
other cellular activities ike incoming and
outgoing calls, SMSs, picture sending, web
access etc.
The Jammers have now been updated to cover
3 G Mobile technology
