CHAPTER VII
I lived in Master Hugh's family about seven years. During this time, I succeeded in learning to read and write. In accomplishing this, I was compelled to resort to various stratagems. I had no regular teacher. My mistress, who had kindly commenced to instruct me, had, in compliance with the advice and direction of her husband, not only ceased to instruct, but had set her face against my being instructed by any one else. It is due, however, to my mistress to say of her, that she did not adopt this course of treatment immediately. She at first lacked the depravity indispensable to shutting me up in mental darkness. It was at least necessary for her to have some training in the exercise of irresponsible power, to make her equal to the task of treating me as though I were a brute.
My mistress was, as I have said, a kind and tender-hearted woman; and in the simplicity of her soul she commenced, when I first went to live with her, to treat me as she supposed one human being ought to treat another. In entering upon the duties of a slaveholder, she did not seem to perceive that I sustained to her the relation of a mere chattel, and that for her to treat me as a human being was not only wrong, but dangerously so. Slavery proved as injurious to her as it did to me. When I went there, she was a pious, warm, and tender-hearted woman. There was no sorrow or suffering for which she had not a tear. She had bread for the hungry, clothes for the naked, and comfort for every mourner that came within her reach. Slavery soon proved its ability to divest her of these heavenly qualities. Under its influence, the tender heart became stone, and the lamblike disposition gave way to one of tiger-like fierceness. The first step in her downward course was in her ceasing to instruct me. She now commenced to practise her husband's precepts. She finally became even more violent in her opposition than her husband himself. She was not satisfied with simply doing as well as he had commanded; she seemed anxious to do better. Nothing seemed to make her more angry than to see me with a newspaper. She seemed to think that here lay the danger. I have had her rush at me with a face made all up of fury, and snatch from me a newspaper, in a manner that fully revealed her apprehension. She was an apt woman; and a little experience soon demonstrated, to her satisfaction, that education and slavery were incompatible with each other.
From this time I was most narrowly watched. If I was in a separate room any considerable length of time, I was sure to be suspected of having a book, and was at once called to give an account of myself. All this, however, was too late. The first step had been taken. Mistress, in teaching me the alphabet, had given me the inch, and no precaution could prevent me from taking the ell.
The plan which I adopted, and the one by which I was most successful, was that of making friends of all the ...

QUESTION VI.
Concerning Witches who copulate with Devils. Why is it that Women are chiefly addicted to Evil
superstitions?
Why it is that Women are chiefly addicted to Evil Superstitions.
There is also, concerning witches who copulate with devils, much difficulty in considering
the methods by which such abominations are consummated. On the part of the devil: first, of what
element the body is made that he assumes; secondly, whether the act is always accompanied by the
injection of semen received from another; thirdly, as to time and place, whether he commits this
act more frequently at one time than at another; fourthly, whether the act is invisible to any who
may be standing by. And on the part of the women, it has to be inquired whether only they who
were themselves conceived in this filthy manner are often visited by devils; or secondly, whether it
is those who were offered to devils by midwives at the time of their birth; and thirdly, whether the
actual venereal delectation of such is of a weaker sort. But we cannot here reply to all these
questions, both because we are only engaged in a general study, and because in the second part of
this work they are all singly explained by their operations, as will appear in the fourth chapter,
where mention is made of each separate method. Therefore, let us now chiefly consider women;
and first, why this kind of perfidy is found more in so fragile a sex than in men. And our inquiry
will first be general, as to the general conditions of women; secondly, particular, as to which sort
of women are found to be given to superstition and witchcraft; and thirdly, specifically with regard
to midwives, who surpass all others in wickedness.
Why Superstition is chiefly found in Women.
As for the first question, why a greater number of witches is found in the fragile feminine sex
than among men; it is indeed a fact that it were idle to contradict, since it is accredited by actual
experience, apart from the verbal testimony of credibly witnesses. And without in any way
detracting from a sex in which God has always taken great glory that His might should be spread
abroad, let us say that various men have assigned various reasons for this fact, which nevertheless
agree in principle. Wherefore it is good, for the admonition of women, to speak of this matter; and
it has often been proved by experience that they are eager to hear of it, so long as it is set forth
with discretion.
For some learned men propound this reason; that there are three things in nature, the Tongue,
an Ecclesiastic, and a Woman, which know no moderation in goodness or vice; and when they
exceed the bounds of their condition they reach the greatest heights and the lowest depths of
goodness and vice. When they are governed by a good spirit, they are most excellent in virtue; but

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. When I began preaching missions, I saw
a large number of people who claimed to be
possessed.
3. "It is far more necessary for you to be casting
the devil out of souls in mortal sin than it is
from bodies, even when there really are
demons there."
And so I resolved to give up
exorcisms and try another
approach…
4. Whenever people came to me claiming
to be possessed…
I demanded three things of
them…
5. That they bear all things
patiently and Never lose their
temper.
For I had noticed that some people become
hysterical as a result of their bad dispositions
and temper tantrums and that patience tends
to calm them down.
6. I forbade them to drink wine or any
other liquor, and I told them that this
was indispensable in casting out their
sort of demon.
For I had also noticed that a number
of people who drank too much tried
to put the blame for their condition
on the devil.
7. I made them say seven Our Fathers and
Hail Marys every day to the Blessed
Virgin in honor of her Seven Sorrows.
I insisted that they make a good general
confession of their whole life and
receive Communion with great
devotion.
8. In the course of missions I
have met people, converted by
the sermons, etc.…

9. This is why I finally came to adopt
the approach I have outlined above.
My God, how many thanks I owe you
for helping me understand the tricks of the
devil and of deceivers. This understanding is
a gift from your divine hand. Lord, enlighten
me so that I may never err in giving spiritual
direction.
10. I am well aware, Lord, that if anyone needs
wisdom, all he has to do is ask you for it
and you will give it to him abundantly, and
you will grant it without reminding him of
his unworthiness.
But sometimes out of pride or laziness we
neglect to ask for wisdom and so we lose it,
and this happens even to those who pass for
wise and eminent theologians.
