Australia is made up of several states and territories. Politically, it is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. Physically, Australia is the smallest continent, with vast deserts in the center and milder climates along the coasts. It has the Great Barrier Reef off its northeast coast, the world's largest coral reef system, and Ayers Rock (Uluru) in the Northern Territory, a large sandstone monolith in the desert interior.
