  1. Hello Atlantis Child Development Center staff! Welcome to today’s presentation called Leadership and Management: Building a secure relationship between director and educator. Some of you may know me while others are new and only know me from the hiring process, but let me reintroduce myself. I’m Latasha Dennis and I am the director of Atlantis Child Development Center. Let’s take a look at the next slide.
  2. I’m sure everyone is familiar with this statement because its our very own vision statement. I chose to begin this slide presentation with it because it deals with the importance of the educators in this room. The vision may seem to be directed towards the children but notice that the vision statement is noted that everyone is to be respected and valued by forming a strong, safe, secure, trusting relationship. In order to teach our children this vision I as your director must acknowledge and utilize this vision statement in order to bring out the very best in all of you. The next sequence of slides will address such topics imperative to our relationship with one another.
  3. Let’s start with effective communication and how it applies to our everyday interaction with each other in order for me as your director to communicate with you properly.
  4. In order for me to display effective communication skills a thorough and clear definition should be addressed concerning effective communication According to Helpguide.org it states a proper definition of effective communication. Let’s take a minute or so to read and reflect on this definition and go to the next slide.
  5. When using effective communication its important to understand the concept so the best example I can give is how we use the peace table in the classroom. When children have an issue with each other they can go to the peace table to talk out their differences and be heard as well as understood. Each child has the opportunity to address their side of the issue, while the other child listens. The children go back and forth discussing the problem until the find a common ground of peace. This practice is a reflection of what I will do when there is an issue. Staff when you have a concern please understand to come to me and address an issue. My goal is to listen without interrupting and give eye contact so that you know you’re given undivided attention. Once your finished I will repeat what you said to be clear on your concerns. Most directors will execute a decision without the consent of the educator, but I assure you that I will work with you to find a suitable resolution to any concerns you have. Not only that if you have any ideas on ways to better the center I will be open to them.
  6. To run a successful center I know as the director that its important for educators to feel comfortable and supported at the center. So its gives me great pleasure to inform that our company is now NAEYC accredited and we now have a low child ratio where educators have the opportunity to help ALL the children in their classroom on their developmental milestones. Low ratio gives educators the chance to write out their lesson plans during children’s leisure activities with a teacher assistant. I felt that this was needed so that teachers don’t have to finish paperwork on their lunch break, or stay after the center is closed to finish up paperwork. I also made it possible to make sure all educators ( master or assistant) know that they are valued and needed with “Educator of the month,” as well as incentives on paychecks when educators aren’t tardy for work. You can also know another incentive is a paid day off when you don’t miss any days for a certain period of time.
  7. In this slide here is a list of career opportunities for every educator with the center. First are the paid class courses. According to the states rules and regulations you must have mandated credit hours to work at any child development center. I want to inform everyone that those mandated classes are paid for when you attend them on Saturdays. Other courses like Adult and child CPR, and first aid are also paid for when you work with Atlantis Child Development Center. I know a majority of educators working with the company are in school and you can take advantage of our tuition reimbursement package. This is a great opportunity but in order to have this offer you must work with the company for a year in order to partake of the benefits. When you choose to continue working with the company you are assured that we hire from withing. You’re given paid training whenever you are promoted, but its important to know that you have the opportunity to train the person that will take over your previous condition. One of our great benefits on enhancing your career are the yearly teacher retreats. If you have worked with the company for over 4 years you will be selected to go on to our teacher’s seminars. The seminars will consist of accredited speakers teaching wonderful strategies to enhance children’s developmental milestones. You will even receive certified certificates to place in your career portfolios.
  8. The next and last slide is going to address the hiring process and how to retain high quality workers.
  9. In some cases people tend to feel that in order to hiring and retain high qualified workers is to give them a salary that sufficient. This is not the case because a high qualified worker can receive the desired salary and not fit into the center’s mission, vision and philosophy. This worker can feel out of place or even become bored with the work and not feel challenged enough to better the company. What’s important is to make sure that high qualified workers are succinct with the program and feel accepted and needed by their creative ideas. This can lead to the workers moving up the corporate ladder (administration) and making more money. Another way to hire and retain workers is to balance salary and benefits. Let’s say that a worker wants a desired salary and the center isn’t able to provided such a salary, but is able to negotiate and show the potential worker affordable health/medical benefits. The worker accepts the off because they need affordable benefits for themselves or their family. As far as a worker wanting a sufficient salary the negotiated salary can be agreed upon with performance evaluations as they grow with the company. These performance evaluations can consist of three months, 6 months as well as the anniversary hiring date.
