The normal curve is a bell-shaped distribution that is symmetrical around the mean. Height is normally distributed in humans because most people's heights cluster around the average with fewer individuals being extremely tall or short. Standard scores allow for comparison of results across different samples or tests because they express an individual's score in terms of the number of standard deviations away from the mean score.
