This course examines various aspects of culture in pre-modern and modern East Asia, including literature, art, performance, cuisine, and contemporary pop culture from China, Japan, and Korea. Each week, students will analyze a specific cultural phenomenon or material from one of these countries to gain cultural insights. The course focuses on primary materials like novels, memoirs, films, art, and artifacts, analyzed in translation. Requirements include weekly 1-2 page journals reflecting on cultural issues, and a final journal portfolio. There are a total of 10 journal assignments and a final submission.
