“The fact that a cloud from a minor volcanic eruption in
Iceland—a small disturbance in the complex mechanism
of life on the Earth — can bring to a standstill the aerial
traffic over an entire continent is a reminder of how,
with all its power to transform nature, humankind
remains just another species on the planet Earth.”

Critical Infrastructure systems are the lifelines of
our safety and prosperity, nerve systems
facilitating communication, transportation, trade
and financial transactions. Our daily lives depend
heavily on CI networks as the building blocks of
our economies. We have to understand how
critical infrastructures interact, where and why
their operations and security hang upon each
other, and what risks and interdependencies
have to be taken into account.
Only then can we create resilient networks and
make Critical Infrastructures future proof.
Resilient by design.
3
So how do we secure our networks and key
assets in times of hyper connectivity, cyber
crimes, population growth, climate changes
and other external threats? By having a 360°
view on Critical Infrastructures, taking into
account network and asset interdepencies, the
ability to run various near-real time simulation
scenarios, that gives you the tools to fortify
your networks. To build resilient networks,
integrated asset management is key.
SIM-CI provides the tooling and key expertise
for interdependent asset & risk management,
operations and maintenance.

USE CASE: INTERDEPENDENCY RISK ANALYSIS
An Asset Manager (AM) of a gas net operator
requests an analysis of all damage to the network in
2015. The SIM-CI database has all the data on
adverse events, registered by field engineers
through the Asset and Workflow Manager Suite
and a report reveals a large number of incidents
involving burst water pipes near gas pipes.
Further analysis reveals that most incidents involve
gas pipes with relative low pressure rate that are
situated near high pressure water mains. The AM
uses this insight to forecast similar damage in 2016.
Using the SIM-CI Risk Locator, the AM loads both
his network infrastructure data and, upon
automated approval, that of the third party water
network operator.
SIM-CI then generates a heat map of all low pressure
gas pipes close to the water mains, identifying more
than 100 risks further prioritized by the age and
maintenance history of the associated water pipes.
The AM now has 17 high risks locations matching
2015 data for adverse events causing the most
damage. The AM requests cost data for bracing a gas
pipe to improve its resistance to a bursting high
pressure water pipe in its proximity. The analysis
reveals that the cost for bracing 17 gas pipes is a
fraction of the forecast cost should they be damaged
by a water main rupture. As a result, the AM puts in
a budget plan for 2016 to brace the 17 gas pipes.

USE CASE WORKFLOW MANAGER
The SIM-CI platform analyses all possible network owners in
the surrounding area of his work order and feeds the
Mobile Communicator with a list of associated contacts. He
calls the first contact, a Control Centre Employee. This
colleague instructs him to check a few cable ID numbers in
the medium voltage switchgear room associated with the
location. The Field Service Engineer (FSE) sends the cable
data via the chat, but the origin of the cable is still unclear.
The Asset Manager spots another switch room on his map
and suspects the cable could originate from here. He shares
the location with the FSE. The FSE can confirm the cable
originates from here. The FSE updates the geo fence, and
his colleagues cuts off the power to the second cable. The
FSE can start repairing the damaged cable. The lack of
information on the second cable is identified as a GIS data
issue; a log of the conversation with the data and footage is
sent to a GIS employee with a request to update the data.
After completing his work, the FSE uploads another image
to indicate a safe distance to the powerline. Once the FSE
has cleared the geo fence area, the control room can re-
activate the power on both cables. The FSE completes all
associated checklist items to close his order and start the
next work orderCOMPANY CONFIDENTIAL

Application: Workflow Manager including Asset
Inspector
A Field Service Engineer working for a DSO starts his
day. He uses his smartphone to log into the SIM-CI
Workflow Manager application. The Application opens
all work orders, lists the priorities and suggest the
best route for the day. The first job listed is to repair a
damaged 10kV electricity cable. He arrives on location
at the local power substation and uses his
smartphone to take a picture of the damaged cable,
which is automatically uploaded to the SIM-CI asset
management database (start audit trail). Next a
checklist is presented to the field worker for safety
regulations. Finally a geo-fence is created, so all users
of the SIM-CI application can see someone working on
a specific high voltage cable. The Field Service
Engineer turns off the power supply to the cable and
starts to excavate the cable. However he finds two
cables, one of which didn’t appear in the visual
representation of the data. He cannot identify the
origins, let alone the properties of the cable and
decide to call for help. He activates the Mobile
Communicator.
