Co-location, co-working and creative
collaboration: the how’s and why’s
Indie Game Collaboration: Emerging Creative Territories, Bristol Games Hub, 20.05.14
Dan Ashton, Bath Spa University (d.ashton@bathspa.ac.uk)
Caroline Chapain, University of Birmingham (c.a.chapain@bham.ac.uk)
Locating Games Development
• Global, national and regional scales.
Locating Games Development
• A range of set ups and types of place.
Questions
• What is the role of co-location
(people/activities) in the indie game sector?
• What form does it take? How do they work?
• Why do these colocations exist? What is their
purpose?
• Should these be supported in the UK and the
Netherlands?
World Café
• Brainstorming session
• 4 tables with a moderator (4-5 people per
table)
• Spend 10 min per table discussing with others
• Everybody needs to contribute to all tables –
you rotate as you wish – 4*10min
• At the end, each moderator will summarise
the key points of each table (3 min max each)
• End with final reflections + briefing note
Themed tables
Theme 1 – What is colocation?
- What do we understand by co-location? What format can it take? Who can be
involved? At what geographical level (regional, local, neighbourhood, building,
space…) can this take place? Examples in the indie game sector?
Theme 2 – Why co-locate?
- Why do people colocate? Economic reasons? Social reasons? Cultural reasons?
Others?
Theme 3 – Colocation and collaboration?
- Is colocation necessary for creative collaboration? Sufficient? What are the
challenges? What else is necessary (non-colocated collaboration, national and
international networks…)?
Theme 4 – Support?
- What is necessary to make collaboration, creativity, innovation happen /
work in colocated environment? Policies? Settings? Is anything missing in the indie
game sector with regards to this in the UK and the Netherlands at the moment?
