The Donation of Constantine was a forged 8th century document that supposedly granted the Pope power over churches and the right to wear imperial garments. It gave the Pope authority over important cities and the imperial palace in Rome. While proven a forgery, the document influenced the assumed power of the Pope and Catholic Church for centuries by expanding the Pope's temporal power and authority. Even after being exposed as fraudulent, the Church continued exercising the powers granted in the document.
