During his college years, he wrote Man Songs, a collection of controversial poems that was considered too bold by the University of the Philippines and became the ground for his suspension from the said institution.

Jumpha Lahiri is one of the most remarkable women novelists, whose novels are concerned mainly with social and political themes of the East-West Encounter. Her serious concern is with the cross-cultural consciousness of her characters. She gives a graphic picture of the theme of immigration and alienation of the uprooted individuals in her novel The Namesake (2003) .The novel is based on the theme of immigration of native Indians who went to America; it deals with the theme of coloured immigrants in USA and presents their difficulties of adjustment there. Connections in Community: African American Authors and the Reading Public

This document contains summaries of 10 children's books along with the author's personal responses. It includes information about the number of pages, cultural or age groups represented, genres, and brief summaries of the plotlines. The author provides their thoughts on each book and whether they feel it could be used for storytelling. They enjoyed books that taught lessons or represented different cultures but disliked one book that gave children "false hope."
Seeing with the narrative of text
The inclusion of text is successful at encouraging rather than limiting a viewer’s interpretation of art and this is most evident in power of text, particularly narrative text. The inclusion of text does not hinder the meaning of the image, but encourages the viewer to think beyond what is presented, thus develop multiple interpretations—this is the power of narrative text that leads the viewer to create a relationship of identification or empathy with the subject matter and the artist. For these reasons, artists such as Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, Pat Ward Williams, and Elizabeth Catlett include text as a narrative tool within their artwork, allowing the viewer to connect more closely with the subject matter and the artist. The use of first person narrative allows the viewer to temporarily occupy the artist’s identity or the subject’s identity, where the viewer can then develop an intimate relationship with the artwork. When a viewer visits an art gallery, often the viewer skims through the painting, sculpture, mixed media, or photograph at hand. The visual content is quickly consumed. Hence, a piece of art is barely given time for interpretation or deconstruction of its meaning. Too often people come out of art galleries looking exhausted, as if they had walked through a store rather than an art showing. The viewer does not take the time to discern the content of the visual arts and thus, the art is left without or little critical assessment. However, aiding the visual with text can change the viewer’s perception or encourage multiple interpretations of the work. Text causes the viewer to stop, and pause to read around, under, or, above the image, which leads the viewer to further assess the image. When establishing a relationship between the text and the image, the viewer is using the mechanism of dual coding. Dual coding, a phrase coined by Allan Pavio, a psychologist of the theory of cognition, is the process in which our mind shifts back and forth between the writing system and the visual system. Incorporating narrative text within the artwork enables the viewer to exercise dual coding to construct a unique relationship of identification or empathy.

Joseph Bruchac Author Study
Joseph Bruchac is an acclaimed Native American author born in 1942 in New York. He writes to share stories from his Abenaki ancestry and provide cultural understanding for readers. Bruchac has published over 70 works across many genres that often highlight Native American themes of respecting humanity and the Earth. His literature has received many awards and allows students to gain new perspectives on history and indigenous cultures.

The place of literature in child's life

Author biographies

The poem describes the flower-fed buffaloes that used to roam the prairies in the past. It references how the buffaloes, Blackfeet tribe, and Pawnee tribe no longer roam as they once did due to changes like the introduction of locomotives, wheat fields, and conflicts that left the tribes "lying low." The poem expresses a sense of nostalgia and loss for the past ways of life on the prairie before progress and conflict arrived. It does so through imagery comparing the past and present, and repetition of the phrase "lying low."
Philippine Literature During U.S. Colonialism
1. Philippine literature during the American colonial period was influenced by education and the use of English as the language of instruction in schools.
2. Writers during this time drew from Propaganda Movement and Revolutionary Movement ideas to encourage continued resistance to U.S. rule. They also aimed to increase American awareness of Filipino culture.
3. Notable authors wrote in different genres, including plays by Aurelio Tolentino and Mena Pecson Crisologo, short stories by Deogracias Rosario and Manuel Arguilla, and poems by Jose Corazon de Jesus, Benigno Ramos, and Evangeline Guerrero. Novels during this period included Kay Pait Ng Pamumuhay
African-American Children’s Picturebooks: Examining the Genres of Childhood, ...
This document examines African-American children's picture books and their importance. It discusses how these books were historically used to promote racist stereotypes but are now being used to teach positive cultural portrayals. The study analyzes publishing trends that show a lack of diversity in children's books, with only 5% of illustrators and 3.4% of books being by African-American creators. Promoting African-American children's literature is important for improving literacy rates in the Black community and teaching children of all backgrounds about Black culture and experiences. More work still needs to be done to increase diversity in publishing and overcome the historical negative stereotypes.
Mark twain & the adventures of huckleberry finn
Mark Twain was born in 1835 in Missouri and grew up along the Mississippi River. He worked as a steamboat pilot in his 20s but the Civil War halted river traffic. Using the pen name "Mark Twain", he began publishing in the 1860s and wrote several famous works, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huckleberry Finn, published in 1885, has been controversial due to its use of racial slurs and portrayal of African American character Jim, but is also considered one of the greatest American novels and a seminal work of satire against racism.
Report on an american childhood
Annie Dillard is an American author known for both fictional and non-fictional works. She has published several novels, poems, and essays. This report focuses on her memoir "An American Childhood", which describes her childhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It discusses how she attended church as a child but stopped due to hypocrisy. It also describes her enthusiastic participation in sports like football and baseball as a child, which was unusual for girls at the time. The memoir provides insights into Dillard's early life and experiences growing up.
African American Literature
This document summarizes African American literature from 1970 to the present. It also covers the publication of his first novel Things Fall Apart and his influences from poets like Yeats.
