Deconstruct UK was contracted to remove asbestos contamination from the roof space of a hospital ward in June 2011. The asbestos insulation on the heating pipework in the 120m2 roof had deteriorated, spreading contamination. Deconstruct removed all contaminated materials, including fibreglass insulation and pipe lagging. They then cleaned all surfaces with 'tac' rags and h-type vacuum cleaners. Precautions had to be taken to avoid contaminating the live hospital areas below during the methodical decontamination process.

Methodology for Prevention and Repair of Cracks in Building
Cracks in building are a common occurrence. It affects the stability and appearance of buildings. So, it is important to understand the cause of cracks and the effective measures should be taken for prevention. Though cracks in concrete cannot be prevented entirely but they can be prevented by using proper material and technique of construction and considering criteria. Sometimes water penetrates through cracks in building and cause severe damage to building. There are many reason of occurrence of cracks like moisture, thermal movement, elastic deformation, chemical reaction, foundation movement, vegetation and earthquake. We all dream of a house structurally safe and aesthetically beautiful but it is not so easy. So, timely identification of such cracks and adopting preventive measures is essential. In this paper, we will discuss about the methodology for prevention and repair of cracks in building. This research paper also gives information about result of Rebound Hammer Test and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test for determining strength of concrete. Because strength of concrete is also an influencing factor for repairing cracks in building. So, we can say if crack repair is assumed to be building of structure then this paper can be assumed as foundation of it.

Dow Corning's new Solar Energy Exploration and Development Center (SEED) in Seneffe, Belgium showcases several of the company's silicon-based technologies to maximize energy efficiency. These technologies enabled a building envelope with structural glazing, weather sealing, triple glazing, high performance insulation, solar panels, and building integrated photovoltaics. Vacuum insulation panels were installed within the ventilated rainscreen facade to meet goals for overall energy efficiency. Thermal studies showed the panels reduced required insulation thickness from 240mm to 40mm while avoiding thermal bridges from standard aluminum fixings.
Nanotechnology in Building construction material
Nanotechnology can be used to improve the properties of concrete and other construction materials. The addition of nano-silica or carbon nanotubes to concrete can increase its strength and durability by densifying its microstructure. A self-cleaning glass called Indigo Tower uses a titanium dioxide nano-coating that breaks down air pollutants using a photocatalytic process, powered by sunlight. Nanoparticles can also strengthen steel by reducing fatigue and embrittlement. Fire-protective glass uses silica nanoparticles to form a heat shield, and nano-coatings on regular glass aim to filter infrared light and regulate heat gain in buildings.

The National Graphene Institute in Manchester, UK is a new state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to studying graphene. It contains two highly controlled clean rooms where graphene research will take place. The building was designed by Jestico + Whiles and built by BAM Construct to meet stringent vibration standards required for the sensitive graphene experiments. Key aspects of the design include locating the primary clean room in the basement on bedrock, and structuring the building with a separate central utilities block to isolate vibration sources from the laboratories. The black steel cladding of the building features hexagonal perforations representing graphene's structure.

Asbestos removal for the healthcare sector - Hospital Ward
- 1. Deconstruct UK case study for the healthcare sector. Client: Ayerst Environmental ltd Location: Hospital Ward Contractor: Deconstruct UK Ltd Completion Date: June 2011 Sector: Health
- 2. About the Project: Removal of asbestos contamination from within the roof space above a hospital ward. The asbestos insulation that had been applied to the heating pipework within the roof space had deteriorated and presented widespread contamination throughout the roof. Deconstruct were appointed to remove all contaminated materials within the roof space, including fibreglass insulation and pipe lagging. Following the removal and bagging of the contaminated material from the 120m2 roof space, all surfaces were cleaned using ‘tac’ rags and h-type vacuum cleaners.
- 3. Project Challenges: The contaminated roof space was located directly over a live hospital environment, including consulting rooms and offices. Every care had to be taken to avoid breaching the ceiling and contaminating the live areas below. The decontamination process was methodical and laborious working off Youngman boards spread between the joists. Due to the distance from the work area to the exterior of the building it was necessary to utilise a modular decontamination unit erected inside the building. The removal of waste from the building had to be meticulously planned and very carefully carried out as the waste route was through live areas of the hospital.
