From the library homepage (www.library.ucla.edu)
you can search for:
Books, Articles, Databases, Journals, Research Guides, Archives and Manuscripts
Search the UCLA Library Catalog:

and to find ‘course reserves’
Where
are
the
books?
We have five floors
of stacks!
(stacks = bookshelves)
Books have “call numbers” that
starts with one or two letters.
A chart next to the elevators shows
the floor where your call numbers
can be found.
NOTE: *Oversize books are on
separate floors!
Each range of book stacks will be labelled to help you
find where your book is shelved.
You can check
out 100’s of
books for the
whole quarter
(90 days).
And you can renew them online.

If a book is
checked out,
you can recall
it...
...and pick it
up in a few
days.

Course Reserves for classes you are
taking or teaching will be shelved at the

journals & databases of other
electronic resources.

Arts library orientation for architecture students

Editor's Notes

  • #3 The Arts Library in the Public Affairs Building has the collections for Architecture, Design, Art, Film, Television, and Theater. The Research Library (or YRL) has humanities and social sciences, maps, Special Collections (rare books and archives) and the East Asian Library. The Powell Library has longer hours and more study space Other libraries have sciences and engineering, management, music, law, or biomedical collections.
  • #4 The Melvyl Catalog searches UC Holdings and Beyond The UCLA Library catalog searches what is at UCLA
  • #5 Some professors place materials on ‘Course reserves’ when they want everyone in the class to get a chance to access required reading materials shelved the library
  • #6 What you see on the main floor of the Art Library is only the Reference Collection: we have five more floors of stacks! Start by consulting books in the Reference Collection: they do not go out of the library and will help you find more books on your topics!
  • #7 We use a system developed by the Library of Congress. Most architecture topics start with “NA” Oversize books are indicated with an asterisk (*)
  • #9 But they can be recalled if someone else needs them!
  • #10 When a book is recalled, you have a week to return it.
  • #11 The Arts Library has over 300,000 volumes, but only enough room to shelve half that many on campus. Many older books and journal volumes are stored off campus in the SRLF storage facility. But they can be retrieved for you usually by the next day! SRLF is open M-F 1-5pm
  • #12 Course reserves can be borrowed for only 2-hours at a time. This is also where you ask for books from the ‘Cage’ and where you go to check books out of the library.
  • #13 Your Bruin ID is already fully functional as your library card… you don’t have to do anything to activate it! If you have problems with your card, go to the access services desk of the library you’re in and ask for help
  • #15 To help you start your research and to find the best databases in your subject, consult a research guide
  • #16 The Avery Index is the best article database for architecture topics. It is the only database that helps you find specific types of illustrations (plans, elevations, sections, site plans, axonometric drawings, aerial photos, models, etc.)
  • #17 If we have online access that will the first option displayed; if not, UC-eLinks will let you search the catalog to find if we have the title in the library and where it is located. If UCLA does not have the article or book you need: use UC-eLinks to request it from another library
  • #18 Scans usually come in about 2 working days. Books have to be mailed to us, so that can take longer, unless another UC has them.
  • #19 I buy the architecture books: if you let me know what you’re researching, I can look for new books on your topics and I can let you know when they are available!
  • #20 Only current UCLA students, faculty, and staff can access the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of online content that we license for your use while at UCLA.
  • #21 I will publish my drop in reference desk hours on my research guide but you can also schedule an appointment to meet with me (or even ask me to meet with your project team in the studio)
  • #22 We have subject specialist librarians for every subject taught at UCLA.
  • #23 We have workshops on developing a research plan, collecting and citing sources, and more!
  • #24 In case you need a place to study at night, Night Powell (inside the Powell Building) is open for students with a valid Bruin ID. Some of the other libraries are also open 24/7 during exams.
  • #25 The Arts Library has iPads that you can check out! And you have access to over 1000 video tutorials on software topics UCLA LearnIT and Lynda.com
  • #26 The Arts Library’s scanner can scan oversized materials: bring a flash drive to save large scans
