ART OF BINGHAMTON
"ART OF BINGHAMTON" gallery event has been organized by
Matthew Card, owner of Matthew Card Photography and Steven
Palmer, pioneer of Binghamton’s First Friday, art educator, digital
designer and programmer at Binghamton University and owner
of Gagrags (Binghamton based t-shirt company). Matthew Card
came up with this vision about a year and half ago and started
contacting his artist friends to get them on board with the idea
of this event. He then worked on ideas for locations for this to
happen and first thought of having the Binghamton City Hall gal-
lery but that idea didn’t work out and then thought of contacting
The Roberson Museum Arts and Science Center and the Bundy
Museum of History and Art. He was able to get both locations for
2016 with Roberson for 2 months and Bundy for 1 month and
that made this a reality.
This event is made possible by the generous support by our main
sponsor Tyrone Muse, President/CEO of Visions FCU, and our
other sponsors which are Roberson Museum and Science Center,
The Bundy Museum, Binghamton Brewing Co, Strange Brew,
Glen Park VineYards, Plenty Oh! Foods, and BingoRento.
The opening for "Art of Binghamton" will be at Roberson Mu-
seum and Science Center’s Sawtelle Gallery on Friday, August 12,
2016 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm. Art of Binghamton is a premiere gallery
experience of art created by 17 local artists. These artists have
displayed and sold their work locally and nationally. Many are art
educators and were born and raised here. It is evident that they
reflect their pride and love for their hometown in their artwork.
Each piece is a unique representation of Binghamton- past,
present or future. The most impressive aspect of this show is that
it is an eclectic group of media from classic to advanced digital
that will offer an eye opening viewpoint behind the appealing
interest and history Binghamton has to the beholder.

Matthew Card
A Binghamton native and self-taught photographer, studied photogra-
phy at the Rod Serling School of Fine Arts at Binghamton High School
and has been active in the field ever since. Having lived in Binghamton
his whole life, Matthew has spent the last 20 years capturing the beauty
of our great city and has done work for many companies including Lau-
ren Studios, the Binghamton Mets, the BC Jets, the Lee Barta 5K Walk/
Run, and First Night Binghamton. In addition to his experience with
these companies, Matthew also owns his own business (Matthew Card
Photography) and has been the leader of the local branch of the Scott
Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk since 2009. He has been exceedingly active
in various photography circles in our area and has launched/is admin for
multiple photography groups on Facebook, both locally and nationally,
such as the Binghamton Photographers Network; Southern Tier Photog-
raphy Workshops & Events; and Macro & Close-up Photography.
Matthew began his career in photography by working for Lauren Studios
as a sports photographer. However as most photographers’ do, Mat-
thew’s style has changed a lot throughout the years. Throughout this
transition, he moved on to shooting the majority of his work as fine art
by the way of night photography and High Dynamic Range shots. In ad-
dition to his experience in the field, Matthew has also been published by
McGraw Hill in a 5th grade science textbook titled Macmillan Science:
A Closer Look, Grade 5 Student Edition. Matthew work’s work has also
been published in the Press & Son. Bulletin and on multiple covers of
the Goodtimes.
Steven Palmer
Is an educator (RIT, SUNY Broome, The Art Institution of Pittsburgh),
digital artist and programmer for Binghamton University and fine artist
living in Binghamton, New York. He’s co-owner and designer of a funny
local t-shirt company, Gagrags.com, and CEO of Plenty Oh! Foods
specializing in gluten free pizza crust. Steven thoroughly enjoys teaching
creative methodology to his students, and does his utmost to train his
students to problem solve and to understand their full potential. Artisti-
cally, his background in art is well rounded. He has worked as Art Direc-
tor, Freelance Designer, and Independent Animator. He has worked with
many diverse companies and clients: Fortune 500 companies in New York
City, a cosmetic company, a gaming company, several universities (in-
cluding Cornell), and even a specialized glass mosaic tile company doing
mosaics. Steven has also run an art gallery for 3 years in Binghamton and
has promoted and displayed his work in New York.
Out of everything creative Steven has done, graphic design and illustra-
tion comes almost naturally to him. He states, “To be an artist, you should
be secure in the fact that you have a percentage of raw or natural talent
that you can apply with your courses.” Johnny Hart, the comic strip artist
(B.C.) told him, “Keep at it, don’t stop drawing -- you’ll get better and
better and it will come with total ease.” Steven believes this is true with
anything you do in life! He tries to keep that in mind at all times.
Thomas La Barbera
Sicily’s natural beauty and wonder was Thomas’ earliest inspiration and to
this day remains a vivid memory. He continues to seek beauty in adven-
ture, evident in his work which captures Alaska’s dramatic landscape and
fascinating wildlife.
As a young adult living in upstate New York and later in California,
Thomas developed a real enthusiasm for documenting the world around
him through visual stories. Applying this passion as a photojournalist, he
takes great pride in creating art that depicts the truth. The pieces in this
show represent an experience of seeing life through a new lens, a process
Thomas calls “Contemporary In Camera Art”.
Drew Lewis
Is the owner of a company located in Binghamton, New York called
Big Drew Grafix. It all started with me being a local musician with no
one to do my cd covers/promo artwork. So I taught myself Photoshop.
From there I learned After Effects is pretty much the same program but
to make things move. This made music videos I shoot second to none
around here. To take my videographer career even further, my daughter
Heaven Lewis bought me my first drone. From there on out, I became
addicted and have since spent thousands on them within the past two
years. But now I can get the most amazing pictures of Binghamton, New
York (my home town) that no one has ever been able to see before. Last
year my art exhibit Above Binghamton by Drew Lewis really took off
selling over 150 Metallic Prints of Binghamton. I have now since started
my next exhibit: Above Broome County by Drew Lewis. Not only are
these pictures available at a reasonable price, but I now offer a chance for
people to come fly with me to show me the perfect spot to take drone
pictures/4k video from so that they can be involved in the process. The
11x17 Metallic prints framed and matted to 13x19 in. go for $125 (no
tax). I also have tabletop framed 8x10s available for even cheaper and are
also on the metallic photo paper so they really shine! The email you can
reach me at is bigdrewgrafix@yahoo.com and you can also look me up
on Facebook at www.facebook.com/drew.lewis.54 I’ve also got an Above
Broome County Page for my metallic prints as well. Thanks for looking!
Gregory Milunich
A Binghamton native. Born and raised in Chenango Bridge, I attended
Mansfield University studying History. After college, I returned to the
Binghamton Area with my wife. We currently reside in Hillcrest with
our two kids. I began my journey with photography in college as a way
to explore and share the beauty of the world around me. I specialize in
landscapes and automotive photography. I also use a drone for a new
view on my landscapes. I currently work as a Special Education Teacher
in Otselic Valley Schools where I integrate photography, videography
and drones into my curriculum as well. For more information and to see
more of my work you can find me at www.facebook.com/milunichpho-
tography and www.milunichphotography.com
Victor Lay
A lifelong artist and musician originally from Detroit, Victor has a BFA
from Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids MI, where he also
worked as a CBS courtroom sketch artist before moving here to Upstate,
N.Y. sixteen years ago. He works primarily in color pencil or oil pastel
in a realistic style directly from life or from original photos taken by his
longtime lady friend, Mizz Deniz Hromek. His specialty is portraits but
he also does local landscapes and churches like those presented here,
as well as the occasional still-life. He is also available for commissioned
work from your photos or ideas. He says, “I like to find happy meetings of
man and nature, or quirky buildings with character”, like his well-known
Belmar Pub series.
Lesli and Kirk Van Zandbergen
Are commercial photographers who live in rural Pennsylvania and work
primarily in the southern tier of New York. They met at a photography
school in Santa Barbara and moved to the Binghamton area in 1982.
After working as a staff photographer for a local utility for 11years, Kirk
was laid off and he joined Lesli in her freelance business. They now have
studio and office space in their renovated 150 year old timber frame
barn. Their commercial work is widely varied, and includes architecture,
catalog, aerial, portraiture, and more. But their favorite subjects are found
in and around their place in Brackney, where they have a dog and a cat, a
bunch of chickens and ducks, two llamas, and a goat.
Danielle Herman
LOVES ART! Everything you can think of from A-to-Z, she’s done it and
plans on doing it again. She considers herself a master of many traits.
“The hardest part about art is getting started,” she says. “I view everything
in my life as shapes, colors and layers.” Danielle took up her first art class
at the age of five in Upstate, NY and has always felt a natural connection
to art. “I want to be a graphic designer. That’s what I want to do. Art is a
part of who I am and my paintings speak the words that I cannot. When I
make my paintings, my end-goal is to make everyone else feel what I feel.”
•At the ripe age of 21, Danielle is filled with boundlessly raw emotions
and these emotions are what serve as a catalyst for her artwork. “I’d like
to think my artwork is a reflection of the struggles that I’ve been through
and the things in which I’ve experienced. Each one of my pieces gives
the viewer an idea of who I am and what I was feeling at the time that I
made it.” More of Danielle’s work can be found at www.vangoart.co/her-
manda15.
Hall Groat II
Professor and chair of Art and Design at SUNY Broome Community Col-
lege, teaches foundation courses in painting, drawing, color theory, and
computer graphics. Groat earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting
and Drawing from City University of New York at Brooklyn, a Bachelor
of Arts in Art History, minoring in Studio Art at Binghamton University,
and attended graduate and certificate programs at Buffalo State College,
Syracuse University, and Savannah College of Art and Design. He also
attended summer sessions at Chautauqua School of Art, Chautauqua,
NY, and Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vt. • Groat has had one-
person exhibitions at Everson Museum of Art, Roberson Museum of Art,
Finger Lakes Community College, Cazenovia College, Jasper Rand Art
Museum, Lemoyne College, Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art,
and Washington and Jefferson College, and has participated in dozens of
group shows throughout the United States. • In 2004 Groat was included
in the Roberson Museum Center’s exhibition, “The Cosmos and Chaos: a
Cultural Paradox,” with artists Lucian Freud, Eric Fischl, Jerome Witkin
and several other contemporary artists. His work is included in private
and public collections internationally, including Michael Douglas and
Catherine Zeta Jones, Clear Channel Communications, Bristol-Myers
Squibb, Cellular One, House and Garden, LTD., Sheraton Hotel Corpora-
tion, Binghamton University, Everson Museum of Art, Munson-Williams
Proctor Institute of Art, The State University of New York system, Rober-
son Museum and Science Center and Washington Jefferson College.
Mike Ricciardi
Sometime in 2008 I was finishing up “RIDE”, a cinematic album about
the American West with the project’s songwriter, Marc Berger. We’d been
working for years arranging, recording, editing, and mixing as we created
a sonic and visual experience that was undeniable. Now we needed an al-
bum cover. Having no idea where to find the art that would complement
all the work we’d done, I bought a camera and headed out west. I found
the artist in me that was expressed via my drumming was also showing
up through my lens. I began learning from talented photographers here
and abroad and was taking pictures of anything and everything. It led to
shooting stage performances, including the WSKG Twilight Zone 50th
anniversary live broadcast, and creating album covers, the most recent
being Foghat’s “Under the Influence” released June of 2016. If you like
what you see here today or are interested in contacting me and/or seeing
more images, go to ricciardiphoto.com.
Chuck Haupt
I first became interested in photography in my pre-teen years after I sent
in product labels for a free Kodak Instamatic. Then I was hooked. I
quickly upgraded cameras to an SLR, shooting nature. In high school
I was exposed to photojournalism, which got me interested in telling
people’s stories visually. I went on to do this professionally for 36 years,
mostly at the Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton, NY. My work as a
photojournalist has taken me to a wide variety of places, from hospital
operating rooms to professional golf tournaments, to lower Manhattan
in the hours after the 9/11 attacks, and into the homes of ordinary people
with extraordinary stories to tell. Now retired from the newspaper
profession, I am back to my first love: shooting nature. Traveling is high
on my agenda: I spent four months in 2014 discovering London and
beyond, and am now refining my shooting style to mostly black & white.
Photography freezes moments in time, forever. The camera alone does
not make the picture; I make it, using my eyes, emotions and heart. Using
black and white in the final image captures the mood and emotion of the
photograph.
AmarA
It is without a doubt that growing up in the Twilight Zone, in the same
neighborhood as Rod Serling’s old house, had an effect on AmarA and on
her art. There is something limitless in recognizing from earliest life that
we each exist in a world not of sight and sound, but of mind. Moreover
that the things that are of sight and sound are profoundly affected by one’s
own mind. • AmarA decided to be an artist at quite a young age, but did
not settle on what variety of artist until college. Truth be told - she still
hasn’t decided, but samples different forms of creation and weaves them
together into a whole tapestry that is her life. She is the season scenic de-
signer and resident painter for Tri-Cities Opera and Ithaca Shakespeare,
she has designed costumes in Chicago and worked in films in Seattle, she
has written a vampire novel, and sometimes plays the ukulele. Her exhib-
its at the Bundy Museum - Extra on the Set of Fat Kid, Inspiration/Music,
Large & Small, and Beyond Words (with husband, jk) were noted local
events. • AmarA lives in a converted livery barn in Triangle, NY with
her belovedest, jk, who is also an artist, philosopher, and author. Their
web on the web all flows to AmarAjk.weebly.com. AmarA’s next sched-
uled event in Binghamton is a solo performance/exhibit at the Bundy
Museum in August, 2017.
David Skyrca
Considers silkscreen printing to be a medium that combines many of his
interests: graphic design, architecture, fine and decorative art, photogra-
phy, printmaking and craftsmanship. He strives for clean, bold, striking
images that force the viewer to see familiar things in a fresh perspective.
The challenging and complex process involves creative simplification,
rendering form and achieving impact with only a few flat colors. His
screen stencils are either cut by hand or reproduced photographically
from hand-made drawings. He custom mixes all of his ink colors, and
does his printing by hand in his Vestal home. His most recent work
explores reflections, complex textures and colored light. He is currently
working on two print series, one of local city scenes and another of music
personalities.
Skyrca comes from an artistic family and sites his parents as his biggest
influence. His favorite artists include art nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha,
painters John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper, book illustrator N.C.
Wyeth, pop artist Andy Warhol, ’80s pinup artist Patrick Nagel, psy-
chedelic ’60s Filmore poster artists Rick Griffin and Stanley Mouse, and
contemporary graphic designers/illustrators McCray Magleby and David
Lance Goines.
Skyrca is a native of Johnson City, New York, has a successful career as
Art Director for University Communications and Marketing at Bingham-
ton University, and also manages a freelance graphic design business.
He has won dozens of local, state, and national awards for professional
graphic design work. He is also co-founder of Gagrags, a company that
produces humorous Binghamton themed t-shirts. He also co-founded of
the Box Factory Fine Art Gallery on State Street in Binghamton. He has
been a silkscreen print artist for over thirty years and has exhibited his
work at Binghamton University, Corning Community College, Stephen’s
Square Gallery, the Box Factory Gallery, the Gallery at Lackawanna Sta-
tion, and the Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival.
Scott M. Anderson
Photography has been a significant part of my life since 1984. I trans-
formed to digital photography in 2010 and have been at its mercy, creativ-
ity and artistic freedom ever since. Photography is iris sketches becoming
digital captives; little soul flash points becoming poetic measures of time.
Photography has its own dogma of shadow and light, its own gray scale of
humanity and emotion.
Scott M. Anderson was born and raised on the South side of Binghamton.
He now lives in Windsor, New York. Scott’s work has been on display at
Cooperative Art Gallery 213, The Roberson Museum, Windsor Whip
Works Gallery, as well as The Whole In The Wall Restaurant. His work
can be found in the Travel Guide brochures for Broome County put out
by the Broome County Chamber, on-line at Spiedie Fest, July Fest, The
Binghamton Press, and WBNG - YouNews. More of his work can be
found at scottmanderson.zenfolio.com
Robert C Johnston
Was a photographer throughout his whole life, specializing in black and
white photography, and developed in his own darkroom. He was known
for his landscapes, both rural and urban. The Bob Johnston Photo Show
and Competition co-sponsored with the Cooperative Gallery and the
Two Rivers Photography Club will occur in January 2017.
In his own words, “Another part of our reaction depends on the subject
matter itself. Based on our lifetime experiences and our imagination we
may feel the excitement and perceived danger of a trip through thunder-
ous rapids, the god-like view from the top of a mountain, the quiet of a
walk in the woods the joy of spring, the stimulation of people in action or
the quiet calm of winter snow. For me, the successful photograph is one
in which both the abstract elements and the subject matter of the image
reinforce each other to provide an emotional experience for the viewer.”
His book, “Images in Silver: Artists’ Choice” is available at blurb.com/
bookstore/detail/1390948. Johnston died in 2010 at the age of 94.
This event has been made possible by our generous
sponsor Tyrone Muse, President/ CEO of Visions FCU.
Without his generous suppport none of this could have
happened.
Thank you for making this event possible.

ART OF BINGHAMTON "ART OF BINGHAMTON" gallery event has been organized by Matthew Card, owner of Matthew Card Photography and Steven Palmer, pioneer of Binghamton’s First Friday, art educator, digital designer and programmer at Binghamton University and owner of Gagrags (Binghamton based t-shirt company). Matthew Card came up with this vision about a year and half ago and started contacting his artist friends to get them on board with the idea of this event. He then worked on ideas for locations for this to happen and first thought of having the Binghamton City Hall gal- lery but that idea didn’t work out and then thought of contacting The Roberson Museum Arts and Science Center and the Bundy Museum of History and Art. He was able to get both locations for 2016 with Roberson for 2 months and Bundy for 1 month and that made this a reality. This event is made possible by the generous support by our main sponsor Tyrone Muse, President/CEO of Visions FCU, and our other sponsors which are Roberson Museum and Science Center, The Bundy Museum, Binghamton Brewing Co, Strange Brew, Glen Park VineYards, Plenty Oh! Foods, and BingoRento. The opening for "Art of Binghamton" will be at Roberson Mu- seum and Science Center’s Sawtelle Gallery on Friday, August 12, 2016 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm. Art of Binghamton is a premiere gallery experience of art created by 17 local artists. These artists have displayed and sold their work locally and nationally. Many are art educators and were born and raised here. It is evident that they reflect their pride and love for their hometown in their artwork. Each piece is a unique representation of Binghamton- past, present or future. The most impressive aspect of this show is that it is an eclectic group of media from classic to advanced digital that will offer an eye opening viewpoint behind the appealing interest and history Binghamton has to the beholder.

  • 5. Steven Palmer Is an educator (RIT, SUNY Broome, The Art Institution of Pittsburgh), digital artist and programmer for Binghamton University and fine artist living in Binghamton, New York. He’s co-owner and designer of a funny local t-shirt company, Gagrags.com, and CEO of Plenty Oh! Foods specializing in gluten free pizza crust. Steven thoroughly enjoys teaching creative methodology to his students, and does his utmost to train his students to problem solve and to understand their full potential. Artisti- cally, his background in art is well rounded. He has worked as Art Direc- tor, Freelance Designer, and Independent Animator. He has worked with many diverse companies and clients: Fortune 500 companies in New York City, a cosmetic company, a gaming company, several universities (in- cluding Cornell), and even a specialized glass mosaic tile company doing mosaics. Steven has also run an art gallery for 3 years in Binghamton and has promoted and displayed his work in New York. Out of everything creative Steven has done, graphic design and illustra- tion comes almost naturally to him. He states, “To be an artist, you should be secure in the fact that you have a percentage of raw or natural talent that you can apply with your courses.” Johnny Hart, the comic strip artist (B.C.) told him, “Keep at it, don’t stop drawing -- you’ll get better and better and it will come with total ease.” Steven believes this is true with anything you do in life! He tries to keep that in mind at all times. Thomas La Barbera Sicily’s natural beauty and wonder was Thomas’ earliest inspiration and to this day remains a vivid memory. He continues to seek beauty in adven- ture, evident in his work which captures Alaska’s dramatic landscape and fascinating wildlife. As a young adult living in upstate New York and later in California, Thomas developed a real enthusiasm for documenting the world around him through visual stories. Applying this passion as a photojournalist, he takes great pride in creating art that depicts the truth. The pieces in this show represent an experience of seeing life through a new lens, a process Thomas calls “Contemporary In Camera Art”.
  • 6. Drew Lewis Is the owner of a company located in Binghamton, New York called Big Drew Grafix. It all started with me being a local musician with no one to do my cd covers/promo artwork. So I taught myself Photoshop. From there I learned After Effects is pretty much the same program but to make things move. This made music videos I shoot second to none around here. To take my videographer career even further, my daughter Heaven Lewis bought me my first drone. From there on out, I became addicted and have since spent thousands on them within the past two years. But now I can get the most amazing pictures of Binghamton, New York (my home town) that no one has ever been able to see before. Last year my art exhibit Above Binghamton by Drew Lewis really took off selling over 150 Metallic Prints of Binghamton. I have now since started my next exhibit: Above Broome County by Drew Lewis. Not only are these pictures available at a reasonable price, but I now offer a chance for people to come fly with me to show me the perfect spot to take drone pictures/4k video from so that they can be involved in the process. The 11x17 Metallic prints framed and matted to 13x19 in. go for $125 (no tax). I also have tabletop framed 8x10s available for even cheaper and are also on the metallic photo paper so they really shine! The email you can reach me at is bigdrewgrafix@yahoo.com and you can also look me up on Facebook at www.facebook.com/drew.lewis.54 I’ve also got an Above Broome County Page for my metallic prints as well. Thanks for looking! Gregory Milunich A Binghamton native. Born and raised in Chenango Bridge, I attended Mansfield University studying History. • 7. Victor Lay A lifelong artist and musician originally from Detroit, Victor has a BFA from Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids MI, where he also worked as a CBS courtroom sketch artist before moving here to Upstate, N.Y. sixteen years ago. He works primarily in color pencil or oil pastel in a realistic style directly from life or from original photos taken by his longtime lady friend, Mizz Deniz Hromek. His specialty is portraits but he also does local landscapes and churches like those presented here, as well as the occasional still-life. He is also available for commissioned work from your photos or ideas. He says, “I like to find happy meetings of man and nature, or quirky buildings with character”, like his well-known Belmar Pub series. Lesli and Kirk Van Zandbergen Are commercial photographers who live in rural Pennsylvania and work primarily in the southern tier of New York. They met at a photography school in Santa Barbara and moved to the Binghamton area in 1982. After working as a staff photographer for a local utility for 11years, Kirk was laid off and he joined Lesli in her freelance business. They now have studio and office space in their renovated 150 year old timber frame barn. Their commercial work is widely varied, and includes architecture, catalog, aerial, portraiture, and more. But their favorite subjects are found in and around their place in Brackney, where they have a dog and a cat, a bunch of chickens and ducks, two llamas, and a goat. Danielle Herman LOVES ART! Everything you can think of from A-to-Z, she’s done it and plans on doing it again. She considers herself a master of many traits. “The hardest part about art is getting started,” she says. “I view everything in my life as shapes, colors and layers.” Danielle took up her first art class at the age of five in Upstate, NY and has always felt a natural connection to art. “I want to be a graphic designer. That’s what I want to do. Art is a part of who I am and my paintings speak the words that I cannot. When I make my paintings, my end-goal is to make everyone else feel what I feel.” •At the ripe age of 21, Danielle is filled with boundlessly raw emotions and these emotions are what serve as a catalyst for her artwork. “I’d like to think my artwork is a reflection of the struggles that I’ve been through and the things in which I’ve experienced. Each one of my pieces gives the viewer an idea of who I am and what I was feeling at the time that I made it.” More of Danielle’s work can be found at www.vangoart.co/her- manda15.

Mike Ricciardi Sometime in 2008 I was finishing up “RIDE”, a cinematic album about the American West with the project’s songwriter, Marc Berger. We’d been working for years arranging, recording, editing, and mixing as we created a sonic and visual experience that was undeniable. Now we needed an al- bum cover. Having no idea where to find the art that would complement all the work we’d done, I bought a camera and headed out west. I found the artist in me that was expressed via my drumming was also showing up through my lens. I began learning from talented photographers here and abroad and was taking pictures of anything and everything. It led to shooting stage performances, including the WSKG Twilight Zone 50th anniversary live broadcast, and creating album covers, the most recent being Foghat’s “Under the Influence” released June of 2016. • 9. Chuck Haupt I first became interested in photography in my pre-teen years after I sent in product labels for a free Kodak Instamatic. Then I was hooked. I quickly upgraded cameras to an SLR, shooting nature. In high school I was exposed to photojournalism, which got me interested in telling people’s stories visually. I went on to do this professionally for 36 years, mostly at the Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton, NY. My work as a photojournalist has taken me to a wide variety of places, from hospital operating rooms to professional golf tournaments, to lower Manhattan in the hours after the 9/11 attacks, and into the homes of ordinary people with extraordinary stories to tell. Now retired from the newspaper profession, I am back to my first love: shooting nature. Traveling is high on my agenda: I spent four months in 2014 discovering London and beyond, and am now refining my shooting style to mostly black & white. Photography freezes moments in time, forever. The camera alone does not make the picture; I make it, using my eyes, emotions and heart. Using black and white in the final image captures the mood and emotion of the photograph. AmarA It is without a doubt that growing up in the Twilight Zone, in the same neighborhood as Rod Serling’s old house, had an effect on AmarA and on her art. There is something limitless in recognizing from earliest life that we each exist in a world not of sight and sound, but of mind. Moreover that the things that are of sight and sound are profoundly affected by one’s own mind. • AmarA decided to be an artist at quite a young age, but did not settle on what variety of artist until college. Truth be told - she still hasn’t decided, but samples different forms of creation and weaves them together into a whole tapestry that is her life. She is the season scenic de- signer and resident painter for Tri-Cities Opera and Ithaca Shakespeare, she has designed costumes in Chicago and worked in films in Seattle, she has written a vampire novel, and sometimes plays the ukulele. Her exhib- its at the Bundy Museum - Extra on the Set of Fat Kid, Inspiration/Music, Large & Small, and Beyond Words (with husband, jk) were noted local events. • AmarA lives in a converted livery barn in Triangle, NY with her belovedest, jk, who is also an artist, philosopher, and author. Their web on the web all flows to AmarAjk.weebly.com. AmarA’s next sched- uled event in Binghamton is a solo performance/exhibit at the Bundy Museum in August, 2017.
  • 10. David Skyrca Considers silkscreen printing to be a medium that combines many of his interests: graphic design, architecture, fine and decorative art, photogra- phy, printmaking and craftsmanship. He strives for clean, bold, striking images that force the viewer to see familiar things in a fresh perspective. The challenging and complex process involves creative simplification, rendering form and achieving impact with only a few flat colors. His screen stencils are either cut by hand or reproduced photographically from hand-made drawings. He custom mixes all of his ink colors, and does his printing by hand in his Vestal home. His most recent work explores reflections, complex textures and colored light. He is currently working on two print series, one of local city scenes and another of music personalities. Skyrca comes from an artistic family and sites his parents as his biggest influence. His favorite artists include art nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha, painters John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper, book illustrator N.C. Wyeth, pop artist Andy Warhol, ’80s pinup artist Patrick Nagel, psy- chedelic ’60s Filmore poster artists Rick Griffin and Stanley Mouse, and contemporary graphic designers/illustrators McCray Magleby and David Lance Goines. Skyrca is a native of Johnson City, New York, has a successful career as Art Director for University Communications and Marketing at Bingham- ton University, and also manages a freelance graphic design business. He has won dozens of local, state, and national awards for professional graphic design work. He is also co-founder of Gagrags, a company that produces humorous Binghamton themed t-shirts. He also co-founded of the Box Factory Fine Art Gallery on State Street in Binghamton. He has been a silkscreen print artist for over thirty years and has exhibited his work at Binghamton University, Corning Community College, Stephen’s Square Gallery, the Box Factory Gallery, the Gallery at Lackawanna Sta- tion, and the Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival.
  • 11. Scott M. Anderson Photography has been a significant part of my life since 1984. I trans- formed to digital photography in 2010 and have been at its mercy, creativ- ity and artistic freedom ever since. Photography is iris sketches becoming digital captives; little soul flash points becoming poetic measures of time. Photography has its own dogma of shadow and light, its own gray scale of humanity and emotion. Scott M. Anderson was born and raised on the South side of Binghamton. He now lives in Windsor, New York. Scott’s work has been on display at Cooperative Art Gallery 213, The Roberson Museum, Windsor Whip Works Gallery, as well as The Whole In The Wall Restaurant. His work can be found in the Travel Guide brochures for Broome County put out by the Broome County Chamber, on-line at Spiedie Fest, July Fest, The Binghamton Press, and WBNG - YouNews. More of his work can be found at scottmanderson.zenfolio.com Robert C Johnston Was a photographer throughout his whole life, specializing in black and white photography, and developed in his own darkroom. He was known for his landscapes, both rural and urban. The Bob Johnston Photo Show and Competition co-sponsored with the Cooperative Gallery and the Two Rivers Photography Club will occur in January 2017. In his own words, “Another part of our reaction depends on the subject matter itself. Based on our lifetime experiences and our imagination we may feel the excitement and perceived danger of a trip through thunder- ous rapids, the god-like view from the top of a mountain, the quiet of a walk in the woods the joy of spring, the stimulation of people in action or the quiet calm of winter snow. For me, the successful photograph is one in which both the abstract elements and the subject matter of the image reinforce each other to provide an emotional experience for the viewer.” His book, “Images in Silver: Artists’ Choice” is available at blurb.com/ bookstore/detail/1390948. Johnston died in 2010 at the age of 94.
