This document discusses a souvenir artifact from Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebration in 1897. The jubilee marked 60 years of Victoria's reign and was seen as the peak of British imperial power, involving representatives from Britain's colonies. The specific artifact is a piece of white china silk from the event. The document provides historical context about the grand procession through London to celebrate the Empire and Victoria's rule. It also discusses how the literature of the time, including works by Herbert Spencer, reflected themes of imperialism and Britain's relationship with India.

Editor's Notes
“Festival of the British Empire”: Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain
Queen Victoria didn’t actually like the idea of the Jubilee, didn’t think it was appropriate and had to be talked into it
England: height of power: “Since 1870 Britain had added Zanzibar, Fiji, Cyprus, Bechuanaland, Somaliland, Kenya, the New Hebrides, Rhodesia and Uganda”
Global Event: bank holiday was declared in India and Ireland in addition to England

The fact that victoria is in the center indicates England’s importance to the empire
The fact that the British would buy this scarf as a souvenir indicates that the massive British empire was a thing of pride for the English, they literally wore a scarf around their neck that brags about all of England’s colonies
India seems to be one of the more important colonies: it’s mentioned in the center “Empress of India” and it is also one of the fancy corners along with Ireland, Scotland, and England (the most important colonies), I wonder if this has anything to do with the mutiny…is England subtly reaffirming there power over India?
Trivializes colonial relationship: Makes colonialism into a souvenir, object
