Elements of art are stylistic features
that are included within an art piece to
help the artist communicate. The seven
most common elements include line,
shape, texture, form, space, colour and
value.
Line
1. A line is a recognizable path created
by a point moving in space. It can vary
in thickness, direction and length.
Example are straight, horizontal,
vertical, diagonal, and curve lines.

Shape
2. Shapes have two dimensions,
length, and width, and they can
be geometric or organic shapes
like leaves, hearts, etc.

Value
3. It describes the brightness and darkness of
color. Add white to make it lighter and add
black to make it darker. Light and Shadow
(Chiaroscuro) – This means modeling a figure
in-depth by means of articulating the form in
making highlights and shadows.

Form or
Volume
4. It exists in three dimensions, length,
width, and breadth. Shape and form
define objects in space. This can be
achieved by contouring lines that outline
or shapes objects and by applying lights
and shadows.

2. This applied mainly to
human figures. For example,
foreshortening parts of the
body to appear in distance
view.
Linear Foreshortening
Texture
6. The surface quality of an object. It
has to do with the perception of touch.
Example. smooth, rough, slippery.
Texture
Color
7. Also called hue. Color is produced
when light, striking an object, is

Art Forms and Expressions
Artistic expression can be enjoyed in a
variety of forms such as:
 Painting and drawing. Ex. oil paints on canvass, watercolor
painting, murals.
 Sculpting. Ex. ceramics, pottery, figurines, porcelain, jewelry
 Needle work. Ex. tapestry, cross stitches, tatting, weaving
 Drama. Ex. cinema, stage plays, telenovelas, tv variety
shows, anime
 Music. Ex. orchestra, band, choir and choral group, opera
singers.
 Dance. Ex. waltz, folk dances, ballet
 Creative writing. Ex. literary, poems, novel,
short stories
 Photography. Ex. interactive, digital art, graphic
arts
 Architecture. Ex. Manila City Hall, Burj
Khalipa, Golden Gate Bridge
 Activity 3: Using a pencil, apply
shadings to the object to appear its
depthness, value and form and even
texture. (Tip: graphite or charcoal pencil
is much more effective to use).
Another option is using elementary watercolor as your
medium. Apply monochromatic color. That is using one
color in different shades. Let us say using blue as your
chosen color, just add white to make it lighter and add
black to darken the color.
Use your illusion where the light is coming from. Either
top right or top left to create shadow effect. Enjoy this art
experiment! Grading scale from 1-10. Below is an
example of how to apply texture to a drawing.
