The name of the place comes from the practice carried out in 19th
century, of sliding logs of teak timber down the hills that took place
in this area. Its a little hamlet in the Annamalai hills (Elephant Hills)
where teak was introduced during the British Raj. In the colonial
days, the harvested timber used to be slipped to the plains from the
hills through a narrow canal – hence the reason for its name.

This pattern provides excellent camouflage and allows this sluggish viper to
become nearly invisible among leaves and roots of the forest floor. It‘s a
ambush (sit and wait) predator, coiled in hiding until prey comes within
range.

  4. Over glasses of the bar’s signature drink, the white peach purée and Prosecco Bellini, Arrigo, who is one of the most charming and kind men imaginable, told us the story of Harry’s Bar. It was founded by his father Giuseppe Cipriani in 1932.A year later he was born and named Arrigo – Italian for Harry. This came about because his father had been working as a barman at the old Hotel Europa where a wealthy young American student, Harry Pickering, regularly drank. Harry was on holiday with his aunt and her gigolo but when, after an argument, they left him alone, his money ran out. Giuseppe, who liked him, offered to lend him 10,000 lire (over £3,000 today) to get home – a big sum for a barman. Harry returned to America and several months went by but Giuseppe did not give up hope that the loan would be repaid – and sure enough one day Harry walked into the bar and returned Giuseppe’s 10,000 plus another 40,000, saying, “We can use this to open a bar together – we’ll call it Harry’s Bar.”

  8. On the border between Argentina and Brazil, the 230-foot (70-m) Iguazu falls form a semicircle 1.67 miles (2,700 m) across, which attracts 1.5 million tourists every year. On the Argentine side, the falls are part of the Iguazu National Park, which was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1984. The park is home to 44 percent of the country’s animal species and is one of the best-preserved remnants of South America’s Atlantic forest. This unique subtropical forest ecosystem runs along Brazil’s ocean fringe and stretches slightly inland in Paraguay and Argentina. It is regarded as one of the five highest-priority areas for the preservation of the world’s biodiversity, a “hot spot” where 20,000 types of plant live—8,000 of them endemic—as well as 1,668 species of land vertebrates, of which more than a third are found nowhere else. This wealth of biodiversity has been granted a stay of execution, for deforestation and urban development have already destroyed 90 percent of the original habitat.
