Armenia is located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, bordered by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey. Armenia's capital and largest city is Yerevan, which is over 2,800 years old and has some European architectural influences. Before independence, Armenia was one of the republics that made up the Soviet Union as the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic from 1920 to 1991. On August 23, 1990, Armenia declared independence from the USSR, which was confirmed by a referendum on September 21, 1991, making Levon Ter-Petrosyan the country's first president. Famous Armenians include composer Komitas, poet Hovhannes Tumanyan, and conductor Aram Khachatryan.
