The new £14 million Middleton Arena combined existing leisure facilities under one roof in its first year of operation. Usage increased 114% from the previous facilities, with 619,679 total visits in 2009. The arena featured a variety of sports and fitness facilities, and offered free swimming which accounted for 50.4% of swims. Membership targets were exceeded, with the arena contributing 59.3% of fitness income to the local Link4Life organization. A variety of community health and sports programs engaged over 1,000 new participants in its first year.
