Although the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is completing a $57 million dollar project which includes placing a gorgeous new facility on the historic site and modernizing the historic Palace, they requested Variances to exempt them from modernizing certain details so that people with disabilities can have equal opportunities to work in, and visit this Museum, same as nondisabled people.
The MA Historical Commission supported their request for a Variance by stating,"The MHC has reviewed the proposed variance requests and believes that without the variance, a significant amount of historic fabric would be damaged, required to be removed, or completely altered beyond recognition. Additionally, the museum may find it impossible to meet the intent of Ms. Gardner's will and its mission."

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

100108_UCLH4A_Art Strategy Meeting Notes 08.12.09
Dear Guy
Please find below a brief summary of our discussions on the 8th of December 2009.
Attendees : Pamela Bate and Sophy Twohig of Hopkins Architects, Mark Emberton and Guy Noble from UCLH.
Overall Art Strategy
All agreed that the most effective way to get the most value and impact from the budget was to commission a large work for each
of the spaces below, rather than divide the budget up into smaller piece meal works spread throughout building. These works
would have the potential to give the greatest impact, are highly visible and would reach the most patients, staff and visitors. The
spaces proposed offer the most opportunities for artists to respond in terms of quality of space, dimensions, quality of light and
patient participation. Therefore areas of priority were identified as
1. Ground floor main reception area and concourse triple central height spaces
2. Second floor chemotherapy lounge double height atrium
3. Fifth floor external courtyard.
4. Lower ground floor ‘Art Walls’. 2no for the Cayley Robinson paintings and 2no for other works.
• Current art budget at £300,000 to include all building enhancements, fees and construction costs.
• GN to confirm how they will be selecting Artists, among the options were a national competition.
• GN also propose to involve an ‘Artist in Residence’ to shadow the project and follow the progress of the works and respond.
This would need to be coordinated with Skanska’s construction programme.
• GN to confirm nature and scope of briefs to Artists.
• GN to contact Camden Council’s Visual Arts Officer
• HA to send details of the Capper Street ‘shop window’ in the facade to GN
• HA to ask Arup structural engineers to confirm loading allowances for hanging objects from the underside of the 2nd and 5th
floor atrium roofs
• HA stated that no spaces within the building had been designed to accommodate music and performance., and there was not
designated ‘exhibition area’ currently within the building.
• HA / GN to review BREEAM credit HEA 19 ‘ Arts in Health’ , note this is a credit for the Trust only to discharge under the
current BREEAM matrix.
• HA to send ME letter to Toby Lewis describing the proposed approach to loose furniture selection within the building.
Trees and Planting
• ME agreed to pursue the Trust’s approval of the inclusion of trees and plants within the interior of the building. HA were
currently investigating ‘infection control’ friendly planting.
Cayley Robinson Paintings
• HA/GN to clarify the technical requirements for accommodating the Cayley Robinson paintings including security contacts,
glass types, lighting levels, fixing, power and data requirements , cleaning and maintenance.
• Post meeting ST and PB visited the Wellcome 183 Euston Road Library to view the Cayley Robinson paintings. HA considered
that the lower hanging height in the lower ground floor Art Walls should work but preference would be to leave the paintings
unframed as currently displayed.

Art for the Cancer Centre
Internal Strategy Document
1. Introduction
UCLH is currently working on one of the most innovative projects in health service in
this country - the development of Europe's leading integrated Cancer Centre based
in Huntley Street, Central London. The Centre, essentially an out-patient facility , will
‘step up to the plate’ to address the treatment needs for cancer patients in the 21st
Century, with individual floors tailored to the investigation and treatment of specific
cancers.
There are a number of key locations and opportunities where artwork will be placed
within the centre and UCLH Arts wants to commission artists to create art work which
reflect the kind of first class quality care that patients will receive there. In line with
UCLH Arts existing strategy the arts in the cancer centre will aim:
“To provide a welcoming, uplifting environment for all patients, visitors and staff
through the use of a varied and stimulating arts programme, that reflects the diversity
of all users of the Trust and in so doing improve patient well being, boost staff morale
and widen access to the Arts.”
Within the Cancer Centre the arts will improve the patient experience by recognising
the individual and by creating an uplifting and engaging hospital environment. UCLH
Arts believes that the provision of the arts within a hospital environment is integral to
providing a high quality, modern patient-centred NHS.
This document details the priority areas within the centre for art commissions and
outlines the processes to be followed to ensure the successful integration of art work.
This strategy also considers and conforms to the BREEAM guidance of Health and
Wellbeing:’Hea19 – Arts in Health’.
2. Priority areas,
Areas that need art intervention are patients and their family and staff areas. These
areas will be commissioned with high quality art that relieve the stress and anxiety of
patients visiting the centre. The areas include:
- Ground floor entrance area
- Second floor atrium
- External courtyard
- Single room, consult exams rooms, PET CT booths, Phlebotomy cubicles,
smaller waiting areas, interview rooms.
3. Decision making process
UCLH Arts committee will sign off all commissions and agree budget allocation.
Guy Noble, Trusts Art Curator, Mark Emberton, Director Cancer Services, will lead
the commissioning process. Small commissioning groups will be formed around
individual commissions where appropriate. Patient representatives from the local
community will also be invited to comment on commissions where appropriate. They
will be supported by the Centre’s architects, Hopkins, Skanska representative, and a
Trusts project manager involved with the Cancer Centre, Annie Pearce to advise on
infrastructure needs.
