Archimedes was a famous Greek mathematician born in 287 BC in Syracuse, Sicily. He made many important mathematical discoveries, including calculating the value of pi and principles of buoyancy and water displacement. Though details of his early life are unknown, he had a wealthy family that provided a good education. Archimedes had a close relationship with the king and invented military defenses for Syracuse, but was killed during the city's conquest by Roman soldiers.
