“so we can activate our own research that will
benefit our communities and be part of a
partnership that is meaningful real and faith based “
“…doing this enables research that we think needs
to happen, and the value added is that we identify
the research that needs to take place rather than
[researchers] coming to us and saying, ‘we are doing
research on this’;
“...there is value in matching conversations to
congregants interests that leads to education”;
“..informed congregations lead to greater levels of

Rebecca and Regina
Hi there – my name is Rebecca Johnson – I work at the Buehler Center for Aging and am the co PI together with Bishop Simon Gordon, Triedstone Full Gospel Church of an ARCC Partnership Development Seed Grant –
Called Pastors4Patient centered outcomes research : Developing partnership infrastructure to facilitate faith based community engagement in PCOR Research Projects.
Bishop Gordon is unable to join us to day and sends his greetings – instead our partner and fellow founder member of the Pastors4PCOR Research Ministry Advisory Board – Regina Greer Smith has very kindly come along today to co-
present our progress to date.
I will let Regina introduce herself …
Regina will start by describing who we are (its complicated!) - our collaborative history – and why we wanted to establish a Research Ministry Advisory Board and Network
Then I will talk through the projects aims, how we planned to carry these aims out and what we have delivered to date.
Regina will then take up the story and tell you about the final big outcome we are planning this Saturday to recruit churches to research ministry and engage with patient centered research
Then we will both talk about some of the successes and challenges our collaborative work has highlighted
Regina on who we are
We represent the founding core of the Pastors4PCOR Research Ministry Advisory Board. Our vision is “to inform, inspire and engage congregations in research through collaboration”
The Co PI of the ARCC seed grant -- Bishop Simon Gordon – pictured here with his exec director Dr Paris Davis and Pastor Walter Turner – is a member of the SHMN of churches which meets monthly to discuss the health issues and related matters pertaining to congregations in the South suburbs and southside of the city.
We have added their logo to this slide because they are an important part of the picture too and essential to enabling our research ministry network.
Bishop Gordon is the head of his own church Triedstone and a not for profit Community Development Organisation – Total Resource. TRCDO has over 15 years of experience in facilitating information exchanges, health fairs, testings and screenings for underserved communities of color
Regina – on Collaborative history.
Rebecca and I had worked together on a project workplan and timeline for a patient centered network proposed by Dr Linda Emanuel – We both presented to the SHMN at Markham in November 2013 . This first photo of us with the chair of the SHMN Apostle White was taken at this time when we first began discussing the idea of research ministry
The photo on the far side shows the SHMN pastors at the Buehler on 03 December 2013 – discussing how research ministry might work
At the same time I was implementing the STAR initiatives – health discussion groups for women living with or having lived with cancer – a project that served as a pilot study for the way research ministry could work in practice.
Regina on why research ministry
The pastors who convened at the Buehler cited these reasons for setting up research ministry – (this is an abridged summary)
They also outlined the way they would like to operate – with a collaborative Advisory Board led by Bishop Gordon coming together to have oversight of a network of ministries
The ARCC seed grant has enabled us to set up our collaborative advisory board and to start the process of engaging faith based churches in research ministry.
Rebecca on project aims
We outlined two aims in our project proposal to ARCC – firstly …… to support ….
Rebeccs
To achieve these aims we promised to:
Develop GLUE -- By GLUE we mean the documents which bind the partners together, enable a common goal and mission and the vision for the partnership
To show our partnership could work together we also proposed to test our effectiveness by collaboratively designing and delivering an event for faith based communities --
Rebecca on time line
We started in July 2014
And by September we had developed a vision and mission statement, agreed roles and responsibilities for core founding partners and drafted memoranda of understanding for additional members . Presenting this poster at the C3 community engagement helped us to begin describe the project simply
Rebecca on outcomes
By April 2014 we had also
achieved 501c3 status
Identified and recruited an additional six members of the board and held our first full meeting
Collaboratively written a letter of intent and grant proposal for the Eugene Washington PCOR fund
Here are the glue docs – the vison statement (which is also the quote on our logo)
The mission statement
Full list of board members
Memorandum of understanding for board members and roles and responsibility of the board descriptors.
Our approach was designed to build through the five stages of project team development
Regina on outcomes to come
Having set up our Research Ministry Advisory Board – our next step is to recruit faith based communities and work with them to identify health priorities and issues for research .
Included in our ARCC grant is a commitment to deliver an event and this is what we are planning to do next – this Saturday!
Here is the agenda for the event
A short info sheet about the Research Ministry network
We have also prepared MOUs for churches
Regina and Rebecca
Regina on successes
Firstly we would like to thank ARCC for the opportunity to develop a partnership infrastructure – the seed funding provided us with the incentive to put our ideas down on paper
We have found that we can work together – despite being far away from each other
That we compliment each other well professionally –
Major successes have included being successful in applying for funding to sustain a community based research training program AND this success in turn has generated new partnerships
Rebecca on challenges
Three challenges we have faced
The first is finding time to get together – TRCDO is constantly applying for grants, delivering programs – looking for new opps –
Secondly – we both bring assumptions to the table about how the other works – it took me a long time to understand how the churches worked together – IPHAMws relationship with NMH is not clear to the outside world
Much research data is tied to geography – congregatiosn are not always tied to zip codes – some travel in … or are working in other states – makes it hard to define areas of study
Rebecca and Regina
We would like to thank the ARCC steering committee for awarding us this seed grant - and to particularly thank Jen, Gina , Jillian and everyone at the Center for Community Health for their excellent support and guidance throughout this award and for our 2 May event.
