Rehabilitation focuses on bringing disabled individuals to their optimal level of functional ability through medical, social, educational and vocational measures. It is the third phase of care after preventive and curative medicine. There are different models of rehabilitation delivery including institute-based rehabilitation, outreach programs, community-based rehabilitation, and home-based programs. Community-based rehabilitation is especially important as 80% of people with disabilities live in rural areas with few rehabilitation services. It utilizes local resources and trains community members and families to provide rehabilitation.
Physical therapy aims to restore functional ability and quality of life for those with physical impairments. Physical therapists diagnose and treat individuals of all ages through examination, treatment plans, and promoting mobility. Physical therapy has many specialties including orthopedics, neurology, geriatrics and more. Physical therapists practice in various settings to provide individualized care.
The document discusses key components of learning the ice hockey slap shot motor skill including balance, hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and the relationship between speed and accuracy. It also covers feedback, mental practice, and whole versus part learning approaches. The summary should focus on providing a high-level overview of the main topics covered in the document in 3 sentences or less.
This document discusses common degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine, including disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis. It provides details on symptoms, treatments like steroid injections or surgery, and outcomes. It aims to dispel misconceptions about spinal fusion surgery, noting that while risks exist, severe damage is rare and fusion is usually successful when performed for the right reasons. Fusion may not necessarily lead to more problems at adjacent levels in the future. The document includes examples of patients who had good outcomes from fusion surgery for conditions like isthmic spondylolisthesis and post-discectomy.

Automatic dysreflexia is a condition caused by an exaggerated response of the autonomic nervous system to a stimulus below the level of spinal injury, causing a rapid increase in blood pressure that can lead to complications if untreated. It occurs due to an overreaction of the sympathetic nervous system and stimulation of baroreceptors. Common causes are full bladder or bowel. Symptoms include severe headache, sweating, flushing, and high blood pressure. Treatment involves identifying and removing triggers, medications to lower blood pressure, and educating patients and families about management.

Physical therapy can be an important part of a cancer care plan by helping patients safely exercise, manage lymphedema, improve range of motion, and address side effects from treatments like radiation and chemotherapy. A physical or occupational therapist can create an individualized plan to aid recovery and return patients to their normal activities. Common goals include preventing lymphedema through education and massage; restoring shoulder range of motion before strengthening; and providing low-impact cardiovascular exercise to counteract effects on the heart and lungs.

This document summarizes research on the use of aquatic therapy for various upper body conditions. It provides an overview of studies that have investigated aquatic therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, breast cancer, Parkinson's disease, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, and other conditions. The studies found that aquatic therapy can help reduce pain, improve functionality and range of motion, decrease inflammation and edema, and improve quality of life for these patient populations. The document also discusses various aquatic therapy techniques and their objectives, as well as open questions about muscle activation and tissue damage during aquatic exercises.
This document summarizes a presentation given at the ABA Spring 2016 National Legal Malpractice Conference on the "Reptile Theory" trial strategy. The Reptile Theory aims to activate the primal, instinctual part of jurors' brains by emphasizing danger, appealing to fear, and portraying the case as a matter of public safety. The summary discusses keys to a plaintiff verdict according to the Reptile Theory, including providing jurors with motive, sympathy, anger, a desire to send a message, and perception of social injustice. It also outlines strategies for applying the Reptile Theory in a legal malpractice case and techniques for combatting the Reptile Theory approach.
Keynote by Karel Van Isacker at the Accessible Izmir 2016 Congress on 2-3-4-5 November 2016 in Izmir, Turkey. His keynote "Universal Design in a Diverse World" (Auditorium Hall 1, 11:30-12:30) addressed the world of accessibility applied to the overall design world from a practical experience point of view.
Reptiles have scales that retain moisture and lay amniotic eggs adapted for land. They live in varied habitats except very cold areas as they are ectothermic. All reptiles share scaly skin, claws, lungs, and lay amniotic eggs. Adaptations like strong skeletons and claws allow movement on land while highly developed vision aids predation and predator avoidance. Ectothermy limits habitats but basking and shade-seeking regulate temperature. Lungs and partially divided hearts aid gas exchange. Reproduction is usually oviparous but some are ovoviviparous, protecting eggs inside females.
Aquatic exercise involves exercising in water to facilitate functional recovery. It has advantages like joint unloading due to buoyancy which increases range of motion. Various techniques like the Bad Ragaz ring method and Halliwick method are used for conditions like osteoarthritis. For knee osteoarthritis, aquatic therapy aims to prevent atrophy and abnormal movement patterns through limited weight bearing exercises according to the condition's phase. The primary goal is restoring normal gait mechanics.
Aquatic exercise involves exercising in water and utilizes properties of water like buoyancy and viscosity. It can benefit those with conditions like arthritis, obesity, and low back pain by reducing stress on joints while allowing freedom of movement. It is also effective for neurological issues like stroke and spinal cord injuries by facilitating mobility with buoyancy support. Key types of aquatic exercises include strengthening exercises, balance exercises, and gait training in water.
Hydrotherapy, also known as aquatic physiotherapy, involves gentle therapeutic exercises conducted in a heated pool. The warm water supports the body, reduces pain, and allows for a greater range of motion. Exercises can be progressed safely using the resistance of the water to strengthen muscles and improve stability. Hydrotherapy can help relieve pain, promote relaxation, mobilize joints, strengthen muscles, develop balance and coordination, and improve general fitness for conditions such as back pain, sports injuries, arthritis, and rehabilitation after injuries or surgery. Safety precautions include consulting a doctor first and gradually increasing exercise time in the water.
Aquatic exercise, also known as hydrotherapy, involves exercising in water and can provide benefits for rehabilitation. It allows for range of motion exercises, strengthening, balance training, and cardiovascular exercise while minimizing stress on joints. Several studies have shown aquatic exercise to be as effective as land-based exercise for improving aerobic fitness and body composition in overweight individuals. It may also help reduce pain for those with knee osteoarthritis. Muscle activity is generally lower in the legs during aquatic exercise compared to land-based exercise due to buoyancy effects. Water-based exercise has also shown benefits for people with COPD and asthma, improving exercise capacity more than land-based exercise for those with comorbidities. However, more research is still

The document discusses how hippotherapy provides sensory stimulation that can benefit children with disabilities. It explains that hippotherapy involves using horseback riding as a form of therapy directed by medical professionals. The movements of the horse stimulate the child's sensory, neurological, and motor systems. During sessions, the horse's gait provides intense vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile input as children experience the horse's up and down, lateral, and diagonal movements. This multisensory stimulation can help address issues like sensory processing disorders.
