Healthy Living: Talk With Your Doc-
When you have a health problem, it’s easy to ask your doctor for a prescription to help you feel
better. It’s not always easy to talk openly with your doctor about your concerns. Yet speaking
honestly about your health gives your doctor important information that can be as helpful as any
medication.
A Patient’s Advice
How do you make sure that you get answers to all of your questions when you go to see your
doctor?
Sandy McDowell, editorial manager at a health communications company and a patient who’s
learned how to be open with her doctor, says, “I make a list of the things I’m concerned about
before I go in. This helps me mentally rehearse what I am going to say and how to say it. Then,
when I’m in my doctor’s office, I say, ‘I’ve got a list of things I want to talk with you about. Let
me pull it out.’ This lets my doctor know that I have things on my mind and allows her to plan
time for us to talk about them.”
Have you ever been embarrassed about bringing something up with your doctor?
Ms. McDowell: “If I’m shy about something, I find a way to let my doctor know how I feel. I
might start out by saying, ‘This sounds kind of gross.’ One time I said, ‘Oh, I really don’t want
to bring this up.’ My doctor always asks nonjudgmental questions. She’s so straightforward that
it puts me at ease. I have learned that I can be in control if she suggests a test I don’t want. I
know I can ask her to explain all my options.”
Do you have any advice that can make it easier for people to talk with their doctor?
Ms. McDowell: “When you go to see your doctor, act as if your doctor is a friend who cares
about you. Assume that your doctor wants to help you. This approach will make a lot of doctors
open up.”
A Doctor’s Advice
Research show that the average patient asks only two questions during a 15-minute exam. Why
don’t people ask more questions?
Geoff Gordon, M.D., F.A.C.P., associate director of the Bayer Institute for Health Communica-
tion, says, “Many people don’t bring up their concerns when they’re in the doctor’s office. It
may be that people feel overwhelmed or vulnerable because they are sick. They may have trou-
ble describing what is wrong with them. Or they may feel like they don’t know their doctor’s
language.”
What do you hope for when a patient walks into your office?
Dr Gordon: “It helps me when a patient says, ‘Here’s what I really need from you today.’ It also
helps if a patient has a realistic idea of what can be accomplished in a visit. If a patient comes to
me with back pain that he or she has had for five years, I can start a process to figure out what’s
wrong, but I probably can’t make it go away in one visit.”
What should a patient do if he or she is worried about asking too many questions?
Dr. Gordon: “Don’t let concerns about insulting your doctor’s authority stop you from asking
questions. You can always preface it with something like, ‘I’m worried about insulting you,’ or
‘Can I ask you this?’ But if you think something is important, you need to get it out on the table
so that your doctor can address it.”
Do you have any advice to make it easier for people to talk to their doctor?
Dr. Gordon: “Ask yourself if there is something you don’t want your doctor to miss. Then, when
you go in, you can tell your doctor what you’re most concerned about. If you have an idea of
what might be wrong with you, let your doctor know that, too.”

4. So far, in the one month this
program has been imple-
mented, the CAMP office is
stealing the show with 23 days
without any incidents, and 9
days without a damage claim.
That’s 55 days!!
Way to go, Team CAMP!!!
On March 6th, HPTS distrib-
uted Safety Boards to all of the
offices to track how many con-
secutive days each office goes
without an auto, workers’
comp, or damage claim inci-
dent. Each time an incident
occurs, the numbers are reset.
At the end of the month, pic-
tures of each board are sent to
Ashley to determine which of-
fice is in the lead. The num-
bers rollover with each month.
The goal is to get to 365 days
incident free!
