Lesson 1: Communication Relies on Care
Right from the moment the pandemic originated in Wuhan, China, there was a lack of communication from the appropriate authorities.
Early knowledge of the coronavirus among governmental heads, health authorities, pharmaceutical companies, and hospitals could have mitigated the intensity of the outbreaks. Instead, the initial phase of the pandemic was relatively unchecked due to Chinese secrecy, and the load exerted on the healthcare system was severely damaging.

I. Background
There are currently four generations working side by side in today’s workforce, yet very soon, there will be a fifth adding to the mix as the oldest generation ages out of the workforce and enters retirement (Zemke, Raines, & Filipczak, 2000). The Silent Generation have all but retired, but some still occupy positions in the workplace and still have significant influence through voting, media, and “heritage” or “emeritus” positions in high-placed institutions such as universities or executive boards. They were born around 1925 through 1945. The Baby Boomers are those said to be born between 1946 and 1964, many are still working and due to retirement age increases and the downfalls of the economy. This generation is can be found amongst Americans leadership at many city, state, and federal levels. The Baby Boomers, despite being rowdy and experimental in their youth, settled into a self-centered and materialistic approach to life in the 1980s, with a clear majority turning to Reagan, Reaganite neoliberal policies and even to religion through “born again” Christianity. Generation X is often referred to as the MTV Generation; they were born between 1965 and 1980. Many grew up during the Vietnam War and the rise of the AIDS virus. They are characterized by their hedonistic approach to life, their rejection of traditional values put forth by their conservative parents, and a cynicism for the established norms of society. Next is Generation Y, or the Millennials, which was born between 1981 and 1995. This generation saw the Persian Gulf War unfold before their very eyes on national television, and soon followed the OJ Simpson trial, as well as Former President Clinton’s impeachment. This so-called Millennial generation is among the most maligned in history, having been dismissed as narcissists and mindless, materialistic and venal workaholics (Barton, Koslow, Fromm, & Egan, 2012; Bergman, Fearrington, Davenport, & Bergman, 2011; Donatone, 2013; Twenge, 2013). This generation has simultaneously grown up with the Internet and yet still carries memories of the world before the digital sphere took over; this generation has nonetheless been denigrated in the popular press to the point where few take people of this generation seriously, even as they “age” into the dominant workforce generation. The newest generation that will be going to work soon is Generation Z, who were born toward the end of the 1990’s to 2010. This generation witnessed the 9/11 attacks from elementary school and endured OIF/OEF each day of their lives, with many seeing parents sent off to the Middle East and shipped home in body bags or with extreme disabilities. If we are changing, we are growing. If we are not growing, then we are not living. Thence, it is important that we keep changing/adapting to the technological requirements being driven by the newer innovations. In the age and era of the human quest for knowledge and the desire to unfold the mysteries of nature (which is always self‐challenging), technology and human life cannot be separated. Technology brings with it both shades: positive and negative.
Society seems to have a cyclical dependence on technology. We use technology inadvertently in all walks of our life; depend on technology in our daily life and our needs and demands for technology keep on rising. In a way, so as to say, are now shackled in the chains of the same. We use technology to travel, to learn, to communicate, to work, and to live in comfort. Come to think of it, I guess, there is no act of human kind today, where technology does not intrude or is not depended on us!! The advancements in the field of technology and its deployment to serve humankind (as per design and intent) was a good idea, but getting tied up in knots of it has also caused us concerns, besides the phenomenon of cyclic upset it brings with itself, in the process of its evolution. The biggest challenge looking at us in our faces is to determine the type of future we need to have and then create relevant technologies which will simplify the way we do things.[1]
Besides the plethora of challenges, which poor application/ misuse of technology and its over‐dependence pose to human kinds, the one I would like to focus on in this note is the impact of technological development/evolution on employment and education empowerment. Technological
innovation will squeeze many people in the short term but will lead to overall higher levels of wealth in the long term. This period of uncomfortable maladjustment and dangerous concentrations of wealth to a handful of a lucky few can be minimized if educational leaders accelerate the changes necessary to adapt.
Vividly, there are many examples of technological advances, which have upset employment, prior to creating more opportunities by virtue of its proper deployment. As I mentioned, the relationship between human and technology is cyclical. The travel agents closed shops when web enabled applications got popular. Train tickets, cinema hall ticket bookings, airline ticketing, and paying bills got so much simpler, but many (offering agent services) lost their jobs. Cyclic as I mentioned, these applications returned the jobs to human but only to the adaptive and skilled, in the form of employment opportunities, in the form of call centers, data centers, research and customer support, and service in the applied fields connected to the application. Wow. All of the choices for this week’s forum response were very interesting to me and it was difficult to decide on only one to focus on. My response this week is on social media as a communication tool. In today’s society, social media is everywhere. It has become an important part of our lives and seems to be engrained in almost every aspect of our daily activities. From Facebook, to Twitter, to Snapchat, it almost seems as though we cannot get away from social media. I think that when the President of the United States is using twitter on a daily basis, social media has consumed us. There was a time, and not so long ago when cell phones did not exist and there were pay phones on corners. Now we have smart phones that can not only make a phone call, but also share video and connect a person to anyone in the world in a matter of seconds. The world truly has become a smaller place.
2 John 1:12 states “Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.” I have a feeling that social media is not what Jesus had in mind when he wished to speak face to face. I wonder if he would approve of our use of social media in the world today. He could easily share his message with many, many people worldwide from the comfort of his home.
Ever since social media was first produced, it has quickly been incorporated into the health care industry and a growing number of patients use social media for many things. Patients use social media for many things; it fosters their autonomy by complementing the information provided by healthcare professionals and by providing psychosocial support. Social media use by patients can also be an aid to healthcare professionals by providing a tool to strengthen the organization’s market position and stimulating conversation for brand building and improved service delivery. In fact, social media may have effects on both patients, and on the wider healthcare system. In particular, it allows patients to receive support, and to complement offline information, which may lead to enhancing the empowerment of patients (Smailhodzic, Hooijsma, Boonstra, & Langley, 2016).
While the use of social media in healthcare can be useful, it can also be very dangerous if the communication that is shared is inaccurate and misleading. According to Smailhodzic, Hooijsma, Boonstra & Langley (2016) “one misguided idea on Twitter urged Nigerians to drink excessive amounts of salt water to combat Ebola. In a way, so as to say, are now shackled in the chains of the same. We use technology to travel, to learn, to communicate, to work, and to live in comfort. Come to think of it, I guess, there is no act of human kind today, where technology does not intrude or is not depended on us!! The advancements in the field of technology and its deployment to serve humankind (as per design and intent) was a good idea, but getting tied up in knots of it has also caused us concerns, besides the phenomenon of cyclic upset it brings with itself, in the process of its evolution. The biggest challenge looking at us in our faces is to determine the type of future we need to have and then create relevant technologies which will simplify the way we do things.[1]
Besides the plethora of challenges, which poor application/ misuse of technology and its over‐dependence pose to human kinds, the one I would like to focus on in this note is the impact of technological development/evolution on employment and education empowerment. Technological
innovation will squeeze many people in the short term but will lead to overall higher levels of wealth in the long term. This period of uncomfortable maladjustment and dangerous concentrations of wealth to a handful of a lucky few can be minimized if educational leaders accelerate the changes necessary to adapt.
Vividly, there are many examples of technological advances, which have upset employment, prior to creating more opportunities by virtue of its proper deployment. As I mentioned, the relationship between human and technology is cyclical. The travel agents closed shops when web enabled applications got popular. Train tickets, cinema hall ticket bookings, airline ticketing, and paying bills got so much simpler, but many (offering agent services) lost their jobs. Cyclic as I mentioned, these applications returned the jobs to human but only to the adaptive and skilled, in the form of employment opportunities, in the form of call centers, data centers, research and customer support, and service in the applied fields connected to the application. Mass media has infiltrated everyday life and has the power to subtly influence thinking. It comes in various forms like print, electronic, and social media. Media system dependency theory holds that the more dependent people are on media to meet needs, the more impact it will have on shaping cognition, affect, and behavior. Media influences culture by marginalizing democracy and setting political agendas for elites. It also impacts the economy by promoting constant consumerism and allowing employers to surveil workers. Schools face media effects as young students are susceptible to propaganda. To resist undue media influence requires individuals to challenge and decode the messages they receive.

Wow. All of the choices for this week’s forum response were very interesting to me and it was difficult to decide on only one to focus on. My response this week is on social media as a communication tool. In today’s society, social media is everywhere. It has become an important part of our lives and seems to be engrained in almost every aspect of our daily activities. From Facebook, to Twitter, to Snapchat, it almost seems as though we cannot get away from social media. I think that when the President of the United States is using twitter on a daily basis, social media has consumed us. There was a time, and not so long ago when cell phones did not exist and there were pay phones on corners. Now we have smart phones that can not only make a phone call, but also share video and connect a person to anyone in the world in a matter of seconds. The world truly has become a smaller place.
2 John 1:12 states “Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.” I have a feeling that social media is not what Jesus had in mind when he wished to speak face to face. I wonder if he would approve of our use of social media in the world today. He could easily share his message with many, many people worldwide from the comfort of his home.
Ever since social media was first produced, it has quickly been incorporated into the health care industry and a growing number of patients use social media for many things. Patients use social media for many things; it fosters their autonomy by complementing the information provided by healthcare professionals and by providing psychosocial support. Social media use by patients can also be an aid to healthcare professionals by providing a tool to strengthen the organization’s market position and stimulating conversation for brand building and improved service delivery. In fact, social media may have effects on both patients, and on the wider healthcare system. In particular, it allows patients to receive support, and to complement offline information, which may lead to enhancing the empowerment of patients (Smailhodzic, Hooijsma, Boonstra, & Langley, 2016).
While the use of social media in healthcare can be useful, it can also be very dangerous if the communication that is shared is inaccurate and misleading. According to Smailhodzic, Hooijsma, Boonstra & Langley (2016) “one misguided idea on Twitter urged Nigerians to drink excessive amounts of salt water to combat Ebola. This may have led to two deaths and more than 12 admissions to hospital.” Because of misleading information like this example, many healthcare professionals fear that social medi.
