Last year, during the first OpenNebula Conference we briefly talked about interoperability in the cloud, introduced the OCCI standard/protocol and focused on one of its implementations — The rOCCI framework. We positioned this framework as the go-to interface for providing interoperability in OpenNebula with significant plans for future development and improvement.
Building on spring boot lastminute.com microservices way (Spring IO Barcelona...Michele Orsi
In the process of migrating our architecture to microservices we suffered from a lack of alignment across the different applications we have. This brought several painful effects to our organisation, like missing heterogeneous procedures, problems in managing services at scale and a lot of duplicated work across development teams.
Almost one year ago we started to develop a common internal framework based on Spring Boot to tackle problems at different levels. We began with monitoring, logging and metrics and we quickly added several other features.
One of the main benefits we achieved was to streamline and improve consistency in the way we deploy and support our services from an ops perspective.
In this talk we describe the journey that brings us to what we have at the moment: a project inherited from more than 40 different microservices that provide a lot of common features and a clean space where our new contribution model can take place.

Cloud-Native: A New Ecosystem for Putting Containers into ProductionGordon Haff
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications.
Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addresses many of the challenges faced by developers and operators as monolithic applications transition towards a distributed microservice architecture. A tracing tool like Jaeger analyzes what's happening as a transaction moves through a distributed system. Monitoring software like Prometheus captures time-series events for real-time alerting and other uses. Grafeas and Kritis provide security policy attestation and enforcement. And there are many more.
In short, there's an entire new cloud-native ecosystem growing up around containers. Come to this talk by Red Hat technology evangelist Gordon Haff and learn all about it.
The world of Linux Containers might be the hottest technology helping businesses to build cloud ready applications and services. In this talk we will provide the current status of OpenStack support for containers and containers support for OpenStack. In the first part we will dive into two container-focused OpenStack projects: Magnum and Kolla and show how Magnum as an API service can help to provide "Containers as a Service" on top of OpenStack leveraging the capabilities of Kubernetes, Docker, Heat and Flannel, and show how Kolla is going to improve OpenStack operations by containerizing OpenStack components into micro services for simplified upgrades and deployment consistency, portability and scaling. In the second part we will see Magnum in action and learn how to get the whole thing running on top of his own, on an existing OpenStack Kilo environment!

Rook: Storage for Containers in Containers – data://disrupted® 2020data://disrupted®
In this talk Kim-Norman Sahm and Alexander Trost dive into the challenges of storage for containerized applications on Kubernetes. We'll see how the current state is and how Rook can help with that. We are going to especially look at Ceph run through Rook here, but nonetheless trying not to lose sight of the whole picture. There is a lot to keep in mind storage as is, but everything gets more complex with storage for containers. From what type of storage to how much and how "safe" it should, all questions that should be asked and most of them which should be answered as well. Rook's project site https://rook.io/
Kim-Norman Sahm is CTO of Cloudical. He also works as Executive Cloud Architect at Cloudical. Previously, he was OpenStack Cloud Architect at T-Systems (operational services GmbH) and noris network AG. He is an expert of the technologies OpenStack, Ceph and Kubernetes (CKA).
Alexander Trost works as a DevOps Engineer at Cloudical Deutschlang GmbH and is a Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA). He is one of four maintainers of the Rook.io Project and is engaged in several more open source projects, for example a Prometheus exporter for Dell Hardware (Dell OMSA Metrics), k8s-vagrant-multi-node an easy local multi node Kubernetes environment, and others. Besides Containers and Kubernetes he is expert on Software Defined Storage, Golang and Continuous Integration (with GitLab CI). He passionately enjoys working on open source projects, such as Rook, Ancientt and other projects.

Container Security: a toolchain for automatic image rebuildsRaphaël PINSON
Containers and Kubernetes have revolutionized the way applications are deployed at scale. This new approach, along with the use of CI/CD for deployment automation, brings new challenges, in particular when it comes to security, as containers are static artifacts that require rebuilding and redeployment in order to perform updates.
This talk will demonstrate how to set up an automated CI/CD pipeline to deploy applications on Kubernetes using OpenShift and GitLab, so that updates of public base images trigger rebuilds and deployments of derivative containers. It will also show how static image analysis can be plugged into the pipeline to increase application security.

This talk was given in Italian at PyCon 23, Florence, Italy. All slides with technical content are provided in English.

Python Summit 2022: Never Write Scripts AgainPeter Bittner
As a DevOps engineer, when you write Python code, do you also write tests? If you're like the majority of the folks out there, chances are you don't. Why would you? It's usually just a script, even if it gets longer over time and starts feeling like Bash.
This talk explains why it makes sense to stop hacking glue code and start developing serious CLI applications, test-driven, with automated tests. Even if you have some experience with writing tests, it's not immediately obvious how to get started. You'll get to know the cli-test-helpers package and see a hands-on demonstration of developing a CLI application from scratch, TDD-style.
We'll scratch the surface of some popular CLI frameworks (argparse, click, docopt), and you'll take home working code samples that will help you refuse the temptation of writing code without tests, in future.

EuroPython 2019: Modern Continuous Delivery for Python DevelopersPeter Bittner
Deployment automation, cloud platforms, containerization, short iterations to develop and release software—we’ve progressed a lot. And finally it’s official: Kubernetes and OpenShift are the established platforms to help us do scaling and zero downtime deployments with just a few hundred lines of YAML. It’s a great time.
Can we finally put all our eggs into one basket? Identify the cloud platform that fits our needs, and jump on it? That could well backfire: Vendor lock-in is the new waterfall, it slows you down. In future you’ll want to jump over to the next better platform, in a matter of minutes. Not months.
This talk is about The Art of Writing deployment pipelines that will survive Kubernetes, OpenShift and the like. It’s for Python developers and Kubernetes enthusiasts of all levels – no domain specific knowledge required, all you need to understand will be explained. You’ll learn how to separate application-specific and deployment-specific configuration details, to maximize your freedom and avoid vendor lock-in.
Come see a demo of a Django project setup that covers everything from local development to automatic scaling, flexible enough to be deployed on any of your favorite container platforms. Take home a working, future-proof setup for your Python applications.

Avoid the Vendor Lock-in Trap (with App Deployment)Peter Bittner
There is no such thing as "marriage" in business. When you're not happy with the service or pricing you move on. But at what price? Switching a technology is hard, switching a platform is harder! Simply follow a set of principles and techniques to ensure your freedom and agility.
PyCon 9: Continuous Delivery starts at your Development DnvironmentPeter Bittner
Continuous Delivery is the automation of our deployment and QA, isn’t it? The industrialized software production chain that makes our products more stable. Well, kind of. It’s more than that. It can save you tons of pain when you apply its principles everywhere. This talk explains how you free yourself by doing infrastructure like software development. Everything under control. Everything under version control.
Continuous Delivery for Python Developers – PyCon OttoPeter Bittner
Continuous Delivery sounds easy in theory, but it’s hard to do in practice. There are myriads of things you can and should do to get your code delivered faster, reliably. We look at what we can do as Python developers, or as a small or mid-sized team to make the industrialized software development production chain come true.
Fix-Price Projects And Agile – PyCon SettePeter Bittner
You are a digital agency struggling with your Django projects. You’re over budget and you’ve run out of time, that’s the norm not the exception. And of course you promise to deliver all features on time for a fixed budget, don’t you? – And nobody told you this is a problem?

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
