Theoretical orientation for ESP learners involves designing English instruction based on learner needs rather than general English. ESP is divided into English for occupational purposes and English for academic purposes. Needs analysis is important to identify what specific knowledge and skills learners require in their target situation or field in order to function effectively. To determine target needs, information can be gathered through questionnaires, interviews, observations, data collection, and informal consultations with learners, lecturers and others. There are different approaches to course design such as language-centered, skill-centered, and learning-centered, and the design process is negotiated and dynamic.
