In each of the sentences above , the
italicized part restates the noun it follows .
Sometimes, it is just another name for the noun.
Usually, however, it explains or gives additional
information about the noun, making it more
definite in our minds.
In the first sentences, for example, “ a boy
who lived with fairies” is the same as Peter Pan.
In the second, “ a place where children never
grow up” is the same as Never Never Land.

follow after a noun or a pronoun and identify or
rename it.
Exercise 1 (Guided Practice)

You probably have noticed the commas that separate the appositives from the rest of
the sentence. Practice using commas for appositives in the sentences below. Can you
find them? If an appositives comes in the middle of the sentence, be sure to put a
comma before and after it.

1. Miss Maňo the librarian helps the children get the books they need.

2. I enjoyed reading about Black Beauty a wonderful race horse.,

3.I heard that Mr. Gomez the Pta president would donate books to the library.




When we want to get to s certain place faster, we sometimes take short-cuts. We can
take short-cuts in speaking, too. Using appositives is one way of doing this.

