Visual Testing: The Missing Piece of the Puzzle -- presentation by Gil TayarApplitools
Full webinar recording here: https://youtu.be/vx34FJYdp9o
** In this talk, Sr. Architect Gil Tayar gives a comprehensive overview of visual testing, discuss why pixel comparison is not enough, detail some of the challenges of visual testing, and review how current visual testing tools offer a solution to these challenges **
Unit tests, component tests, automation tests, acceptance tests: all the various kinds of tests check that an application works as it should, and functions as expected.
But until now, testing how an app looks like was delegated to manual testing. When all you had was a desktop or web app, that was almost acceptable: there was a lot of application to check, but only one form factor.
But in these days of multiple form factors -- desktops of various widths, mobile, tablet -- automation is a necessity. But how does one go about checking how an app looks? Comparing pixels against a baseline yields too many false positives, and any small change in your app will drown you in failed tests that you need to fix manually.
Visual Testing offers a solution to the problem. Using online services and algorithms taken from the world of AI, Visual Testing offers a platform that enables you to finally ensure that your application looks like you expect it to.
Key takeaway:
* Why functional testing is not enough
* Challenges of testing apps in a multiple-form-factor world
* How current visual testing tools overcome the challenges
* The place of Visual Testing in your tests
* How to write visual tests

Dependency injection is a software design pattern that allows someone to remove hard-coded dependencies and makes it possible to change them. Dependencies can be injected to the object via the constructor or via defined method or a setter property.
Faiz Mohamed Haneef is currently the CEO and Chief Technology Architect at Neoito. He's a former Architect at Lowe's, Hallmark and Infosys.

Tales of modernizing trello's web stackVincent Kok
The web community is a fast moving community and over the recent years, many great frameworks and tools have emerged. Technology changes made in the past are not always the right ones today. This applies to Trello’s web stack too. CoffeeScript and Backbone were great choices 7 years ago but there are better tools and frameworks available now, so the Trello team decided to update its stack. But, how does one tackle this and how do you make sure you continue to innovate product-wise while modernizing its web stack? This is what we will discuss in this session -- main drivers for modernizing, the reasoning for choosing for TypeScript, React and GraphQL and will discuss our strategy implementing it, including two failed attempts. When leaving this session you will have learned which tactics to apply when modernizing a web stack and warning signs to be aware off.
There are a lot of tools and processes involved in modern front-end development: Component development, design, data fetching, testing, and more. At Stripe, our team have put a lot of effort into making these things work together in a way that's more than the sum of their parts.
- How BFF and GraphQL can be used together
- Reliable architecture to supply data
- Flexible architecture in data layer
- Improve user experience using BFF and GraphQL
20141024 AgileDC 2014 Conf How much testing is enough for software that can c...Craeg Strong
Using tools like TDD and ATDD, Agile provides the means to be confident that your brand new software is well tested-- even for life critical situations such as criminal justice software. But hold on a minute! It is a rare mission critical system that is built completely from scratch. There are always legacy components your team didn't build or doesn't control. Maybe the previous contractor built it-- but now they are gone and it is your problem. How can you be certain that everything functions properly in such a situation? How much testing is enough? How can you know whether a system has been tested? These are the questions that standards such as CMMI and PMBOK seek to answer with traceability.
The debate about traceability has been raging for a long time, with passionate advocates on both sides of the argument. Projects following traditional waterfall methods, and projects that conform to PMBOK or CMMI standards often create and maintain a requirements traceability matrix, or RTM, a document that traces “shall” requirements to functional capabilities and testcases. Some Agilists argue that the RTM is rarely consulted in practice, so the significant efforts required to maintain such a document are “waste.” Others point out that agile practices such as TDD provide all the traceability that may be needed. This talk will explore the underlying reasons why traceability may be important and worthwhile in many Federal government contexts, and review exciting new technologies that may provide an “agile answer” to this conundrum.
Given at Agile Camp 2013, San Jose, CA. Sept. 21
How do you take a gigantic organization like PayPal that was entrenched in a culture of a “”long shelf life”” and transform it to a culture of rapid experimentation? Bill will give 3 principles applied to PayPal engineering to make it a full partner with Lean UX. This will be illustrated by showing how they re-factored the tech stack and changed the way engineers work in Lean streams with design & product partners and how it plays with agile.
As a backdrop Bill will discuss several historical factors in the field of software engineering that are antithetical to the Lean Startup mindset but still find their way into most large enterprises. By understanding this historical context and applying lean principles he will demonstrate how a lean transformation can take place in any enterprise.
The PVS-Studio team is now actively developing a static analyzer for C# code. The first version is expected by the end of 2015. And for now my task is to write a few articles to attract C# programmers' attention to our tool in advance. I've got an updated installer today, so we can now install PVS-Studio with C#-support enabled and even analyze some source code. Without further hesitation, I decided to scan whichever program I had at hand. This happened to be the Umbraco project. Of course we can't expect too much of the current version of the analyzer, but its functionality has been enough to allow me to write this small article.

6 Principles for Enabling Build/Measure/Learn: Lean Engineering in ActionBill Scott
Presented at Lean Day West - Portland, OR. Sept. 17, 2013
How do you take a gigantic organization like PayPal and begin to transform the experiences? Engineering is often the key blocker in being able to achieve a high rate of innovation. In this talk, Bill Scott will give specific examples on implemented Lean UX in a 13,000 person company, re-factored the technology stack and changed the way engineers work with design & product partners. In addition, Bill will provide additional examples that go back to his early days writing one of the first Macintosh games to his more recent work at Netflix and the power of treating the user interface layer as the experimentation layer.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

Empowering the Data Analytics Ecosystem: A Laser Focus on Value
The data analytics ecosystem thrives when every component functions at its peak, unlocking the true potential of data. Here's a laser focus on key areas for an empowered ecosystem:
1. Democratize Access, Not Data:
Granular Access Controls: Provide users with self-service tools tailored to their specific needs, preventing data overload and misuse.
Data Catalogs: Implement robust data catalogs for easy discovery and understanding of available data sources.
2. Foster Collaboration with Clear Roles:
Data Mesh Architecture: Break down data silos by creating a distributed data ownership model with clear ownership and responsibilities.
Collaborative Workspaces: Utilize interactive platforms where data scientists, analysts, and domain experts can work seamlessly together.
3. Leverage Advanced Analytics Strategically:
AI-powered Automation: Automate repetitive tasks like data cleaning and feature engineering, freeing up data talent for higher-level analysis.
Right-Tool Selection: Strategically choose the most effective advanced analytics techniques (e.g., AI, ML) based on specific business problems.
4. Prioritize Data Quality with Automation:
Automated Data Validation: Implement automated data quality checks to identify and rectify errors at the source, minimizing downstream issues.
Data Lineage Tracking: Track the flow of data throughout the ecosystem, ensuring transparency and facilitating root cause analysis for errors.
5. Cultivate a Data-Driven Mindset:
Metrics-Driven Performance Management: Align KPIs and performance metrics with data-driven insights to ensure actionable decision making.
Data Storytelling Workshops: Equip stakeholders with the skills to translate complex data findings into compelling narratives that drive action.
Benefits of a Precise Ecosystem:
Sharpened Focus: Precise access and clear roles ensure everyone works with the most relevant data, maximizing efficiency.
Actionable Insights: Strategic analytics and automated quality checks lead to more reliable and actionable data insights.
Continuous Improvement: Data-driven performance management fosters a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
Sustainable Growth: Empowered by data, organizations can make informed decisions to drive sustainable growth and innovation.
By focusing on these precise actions, organizations can create an empowered data analytics ecosystem that delivers real value by driving data-driven decisions and maximizing the return on their data investment.
Data Centers - Striving Within A Narrow Range - Research Report - MCG - May 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) expects to see demand and the changing evolution of supply, facilitated through institutional investment rotation out of offices and into work from home (“WFH”), while the ever-expanding need for data storage as global internet usage expands, with experts predicting 5.3 billion users by 2023. These market factors will be underpinned by technological changes, such as progressing cloud services and edge sites, allowing the industry to see strong expected annual growth of 13% over the next 4 years.
Whilst competitive headwinds remain, represented through the recent second bankruptcy filing of Sungard, which blames “COVID-19 and other macroeconomic trends including delayed customer spending decisions, insourcing and reductions in IT spending, energy inflation and reduction in demand for certain services”, the industry has seen key adjustments, where MCG believes that engineering cost management and technological innovation will be paramount to success.
MCG reports that the more favorable market conditions expected over the next few years, helped by the winding down of pandemic restrictions and a hybrid working environment will be driving market momentum forward. The continuous injection of capital by alternative investment firms, as well as the growing infrastructural investment from cloud service providers and social media companies, whose revenues are expected to grow over 3.6x larger by value in 2026, will likely help propel center provision and innovation. These factors paint a promising picture for the industry players that offset rising input costs and adapt to new technologies.
According to M Capital Group: “Specifically, the long-term cost-saving opportunities available from the rise of remote managing will likely aid value growth for the industry. Through margin optimization and further availability of capital for reinvestment, strong players will maintain their competitive foothold, while weaker players exit the market to balance supply and demand.”
