Tasmania Police is replacing desktop computers with tablets to achieve enterprise mobility. A pilot program issued 37 officers with tablets, finding they saved over 280 working hours over six weeks, equivalent to 43 hours of overtime or $2580 annually. Key decisions included choosing Windows 8, issuing tablets personally, and developing web-based apps. Issues included connectivity switching networks and legacy IPv4 systems on 3G. Outcomes for policing include 24/7 access to systems and intelligence, more efficient report writing and statement taking, and a common operating picture. The project aims to replace all station-based desktops with personal tablets across Tasmania Police.
