 Discussion

• Statement 1: Formal accredited auditors are required to
assess the trustworthiness of a digital repository.
• Statement 2: An integrated (European) framework for Audit
and Certification is essential to coordinate all activities in the
field of audit and certification of digital repositories.

Key points, concerning peer review of data

 • Scientists recognize that accessibility of data is a precondition for
   peer review of it.
 • In principle, reviewers and editors find it preferable for data to be
peer reviewed but many reservations exist about its feasibility.
 • Scientists fear that reviewing data in the course of the peer review
process is not practical due to the amount of work and time
involved, and that peer review might grind to a halt.
 • Scientists have a positive attitude towards innovative publication
strategies of research data and welcome greater clarity regarding
   the re-use of their data.
 • Scientists are sceptical about obligatory measures of data
   management, since they fear bureaucracy.

 Statements:

Statement 1. “The best way to determine the quality of
research data is by creating reviewing systems”
Statement 2: “Publications enhanced with data give the best
guarantee for the quality assurance of research results”

Authenticity: the key issues
“The degree of authenticity is judged on the basis of evidence”
 [OAIS (2012 version]

Key issue : collecting the appropriate evidence

  Understand:
   – When evidence should be collected
   – Which evidence should be collected
   – How to structure and preserve it

  The APARSEN contribution

APARSEN methodology for the management of
authenticity of a Digital Resource (DR):

 – Formal authenticity model: represent the DR
lifecycle and the management of authenticity
 – Operational guidelines: guide the process of
instantiating the model in a specific environment

 – Case studies: tune the methodology and test its
effectiveness in a variety of environments

   Key points of the model
 Encompassing to the whole lifecycle: before and
  after preservation begins
 Core Events: transformations that affect the DR
  authenticity
 Event templates: specify:
− Controls that should be performed
− Authenticity evidence to be collected
 Authenticity Evidence Records:
− authenticity evidence for a given event
− provides a basis for interoperability

 Discussion

• Statement 1. “There is no set of information items that are
sufficient for establishing the authenticity of a digital object
  (in a generic case)”
• Statement 2: “If something is changed during the lifecycle of
a digital object that change should be documented as
  evidence”

  • 13. Co-funded by the European Union under FP7-ICT-2009-6 Key points, concerning peer review of data • Scientists recognize that accessibility of data is a precondition for peer review of it. • In principle, reviewers and editors find it preferable for data to be peer reviewed but many reservations exist about its feasibility. • Scientists fear that reviewing data in the course of the peer review process is not practical due to the amount of work and time involved, and that peer review might grind to a halt. • Scientists have a positive attitude towards innovative publication strategies of research data and welcome greater clarity regarding the re-use of their data. • Scientists are sceptical about obligatory measures of data management, since they fear bureaucracy.
