Anorexia Nervosa An eating disorder that affects up to 4% of women at some point in their lives The intense fear of gaining weight Affects mostly girls and women, although some males can become affected It’s more than just a problem with food, it’s a fear An anorexic will literally starve herself to be thin 15% of affected people die with this condition
Causes Low self esteem and a distorted body image Lack of self control Letting the media images affect personality  possibly inherited in some cases Dysfunction in the hypothalamus which is a part of the brain Feeding problems as an infant Pressure from peers to be thin and attractive
Signs and Symptoms All the person can think about is food and their weight Excessive exercising Extreme dieting (pills, complete cut of food groups, laxatives etc.) 3 consecutive menstrual cycles are missed Body weight is less than 85% of the expected average weight. Extreme fatigue and disrupted sleep Depression and social withdrawal Anxiety disorders may develop OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) may develop Attention, concentration, and effort decrease Anemia Hair gets thin and brittle or even more develops
Diagnosis Brought to the attention of family members Professional help is sought (family doctor) Weight is recorded and monitored Information is obtained from parents about the patient’s history
Treatment Options Helpline:  1-800-941-5313   Local treatment centers for eating disorders Hospitalized if necessary Weight is monitored and slowly tried to gain back Medication can be administered (such as  Olanzapine  to stablize mood)
