How can agencies engage volunteers in supporting a more included life in the community for people with intellectual disabilities?
Keenan Wellar, MA and Julie Kingstone, MEd
Co-Founders & Co-Leaders, LiveWorkPlay
Starting in 2008, LiveWorkPlay embarked on a journey of “de-programming” by making a shift from congregated programs
to authentic community-based supports and outcomes based
on flexible and individualized person-centered planning.
At the core of this transformation, the agency dramatically expanded the size and scope of its volunteer team. This has changed the organization, it has changed lives, and it is changing the community.

LiveWorkPlay.ca (Ottawa, Canada)
After steadily accumulating site-based infrastructure and resources for more than ten years, this charitable organization based in Ottawa, Canada, made a radical shift in thinking and actions. Starting in 2008 and over a period of three years, the agency completed a full transition away from day programs and other sheltered activities, finding new energy and synergies through partnership with hundreds of individuals and partners in the community.
For individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families, in addition to the enjoyment of concrete results that range from employment to the development of new friendships, they report dramatic new feelings of hope and possibility, finding new energy through escape from ongoing dialogues about systems limitations and scarcity.
Informed by collaboration with other agencies and thought leaders that have embraced person-centred and social capital concepts and models, LiveWorkPlay now seeks to encourage and support other agencies and jurisdictions to pursue similar transitions.
Here is our monthly publication about our partnership in Memphremagog MRC.
By your good's practises, we would like to inspire you in you environment's development.

there are any unfavorable findingsthere will be servicesputinplace tocounteractthese negative

III. ENVIROMENTAL ANALYSIS
We are in a recessionandhave beenfora few yearsherinthe UnitedStates.Thoughjobsare finally
beginningtoreturntoour economymore andmore people are goingbackto furthertheireducations
we still have barrierswhenitcomestogettingfamiliesintoaplace where theycanbe efficient.Just

IV. THE POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT
In the currenttimesthere are forceswhichare incontrol whichfavorsthe wealthy. We have a

inspirationthere are nolongerbarriersregardingtorace or sex that we cannotovercome. The target
marketfor our clientbase isinthe neighborhoodswhichare mostlyurban.Throughhardwork&
dedicationwe willbe successfulandsee toitthat our familiesare aswell.
V. THE ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT
There are large numbersof people insubsidizedhousingwhichall butincludesCMHA,andSection8
programs.There are waylargernumbersof people andfamiliesrentingratherthanowninghomes.Our
8. economytooka bighit withthe housingmarketplummetingthenthe stockmarketcrashing.Everyone
saysjobsare the answerbut I feel teaching self-sufficiency isthe key.InCincinnati there are justafew
homelesssheltersandnone thatcater to manwoman andchildfor certainreasonsIcan understand;
but we wouldlove tobe the monopolyonthe marketwhenit comesto familyshelters.
VI. THE TECHNOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT
There has neverbeenabettertime foradvertisingwhenitcomestohavingor startinga business.
Throughall the free social networksavailable online, andhow cheaplyandefficientlyyoucouldruna
website, itwouldbe madtonottake advantage of our technological environment.Iwill filterfunds,
spreadawareness, andpublicize AnnuitCoeptisuntilwe gettothe heightswe are strivingtoachieve.
VII. THE MARKET
There isa greatneedonthe marketforsocial programs& anythingelse thatwouldbetterourposition
as a people.Thoughmanyare blessedwithwealthnotverymuchmakesitto the people thatgenuinely
needitinmy opinion. We will nottake ourjobslightly.A homelessshelterthatcatersto the entire
familyasa unitwouldbe a monopolyonthe market.
VIII. THE COMPETITION
There are a fewhomelessshelterswithinCincinnati, butthere isnotone thatdoeswhat we are tryingto
achieve. There are placesthatcater onlytosingle womenandbatteredshelters. There istransitional
housingwhichcatersjustto single men andwomen. There are afew sheltersthatcaterto womenand
children.ThroughoutCincinnati Ihave notfoundone thatcaters to manwomanand childas a family
unit.Asfar as I am concernedthere isno competition. The reasonforthisisbecause withthe presence
of youngmalesandmen, there wouldhave tobe securityhiredtomonitorthe safetyof others. We see
thisas an opportunityandhave noproblemshiringthe professionalsneededtoensure ourclients
safety. We will be amonopolyonthe marketwhenitcomesto cateringto the familyunitasa whole.
SWOT ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
There is a needfor our serviceswithin
Cincinnati
We have a monopoly on the market within
Cincinnati.
We have an outline of servicesand
implementation;there are no grey areas
whenit comes to what we want to achieve
in our nonprofit.
We will have servicesthat cover mental,
spiritual,physical,and emotional
awareness.
WEAKNESSES
We are starting from ground zero and in
order to get to where we are striving we
have a steephill to climb.
Findingthe financial support isour only
weaknessthough through fundraising&
spreadingawareness we will turn that
weaknessinto strength.
9. OPPORTUNITIES
Having experiencedhomelessnessIhave
connectionswith the service coordinators
and through mentorshipI am building
what I saw a lack thereof.
My study in businessadministrationand
political science and law will be the
knowledge beingthe force that drivesus.
Beinga nonprofitwe have the option to
solicitfunds through grants and loans
specificallyalsothere are agenciesthat
wouldbe willingto helpus through good
will and social endeavors.
Having a 501c3 makes it a lot easierwhen
making big purchases.
THREATS
The property we are looking to buy is n
foreclosure and in needofremodeling.
Though grants are available theyare
limitedto nonprofitsbeingincorporated
lessthan 1 year.
The 501c3 is expensive butnot
unreachable.There is a lot more
paperwork also whendealingwith a
nonprofit.
