MESSAGE
FROM THE CEO
2017 was a great year, since it was the year in which we celebrated our 10th anniversary. As this
is a very important mark we took some time to analyse all the goals we have achieved and all the
lessons we learned on a daily basis in order to improve our performance. In 10 years we were
able to establish strategically located offices in Aveiro, São João da Madeira, Coimbra, Porto and
Lisboa. We also invested in creating solid and trustworthy relationships with customers that can
only be built over time.
Focussing on Smart Cities, Tailor-made, and Telecom and Future Internet sectors, we have come
a long way and achieved remarkable and outstanding results that will, indeed, improve the life
of the next generations. These projects lead us to believe that Ubiwhere is truly striving to make
a difference. It must be said that this has only been possible due to the dedication of all the
collaborators that have worked alongside us in the last 10 years and that have given their best in
their field of expertise day after day. There is no doubt that their emphasis on working as a team,
from developers to marketeers, designers and business developers, has made all the difference
to reaching innovative answers. They are eager to develop, innovate, research, use their creativity
and to improve. We believe that we are on the right track to creating wonderful solutions and to
continue to grow solidly and successfully.
Looking back, we are on the good path regarding the creation of innovative technological
solutions in many areas. Our customers have proven to be very satisfied with our tailor-made
projects in different sectors which has given us more motivation to develop a variety of products
and services that best suit our customers’ expectations.
We truly believe that this is the very great beginning of a wonderful journey and the best is yet to

Ubiwhere was born in 2007. We started
by being a group of focused professionals
passionate about technology, internet,
informatics and computers. We always wanted
to work for futuristic realities and suit the
future. We believed in meaningful days and
we were sure that our work could contribute
to a better tomorrow. So we started to think
about ways to apply our knowledge, to put it at
society’s disposal, and more than helping the
everyday life, we wanted to assure the future
of the generations that were yet to come. We
tried to identify what was not so well in our city,
and with that a new challenge arose - we set off
on the smart cities journey.
We actually started very small, but always
aimed very high. Now we are a Portuguese
Research and Development SME focused on
Smart Cities, Telecommunications and Tailor-
Made projects, working for and with all parts of
the world and growing every day.
We develop user-centered software solutions.
Our main goal is to research and develop
powerful solutions and to create valuable
intellectual property internally and for
our clients, in order to be an international
reference in the sectors in which we operate.
Regarding the Smart Cities sector,
interoperability, Open Data and smart cloud-
based services are vital. Our telecom and
Future Internet also offers great variety, with
areas like QoS (Quality of Service), Networking
Convergence and Future Internet Services
(NFVs). We also work with prestigious entities
like SONAE, PT Inovação, and the National
Government, among others. Besides this,
Ubiwhere cooperates with leading national
and international technology companies
which value our partnership and recognize
the company’s large-scale contribution to their
creative and innovative projects. Our company
maintains a long-life commitment to ensure the
best practices in quality management, holding
the ISO9001 and CMMI Level 3 Certifications.
Our multi-faced team truly like to work with
us. They are creative, innovative and have
an entrepreneurial spirit. Every day our
collaborators work to deliver the solutions that
our clients need. They adapt very fast to all
the changes, solve problems and are always
ready to face s technology and businesses’
greatest challenges. This high quality is only

talented team with experts from different but
complementary fields. We rely on a dynamic,
passionate and highly qualified team composed
by Senior Executives, Researchers, Consultants,
Project Managers, Designers, Marketing and

Quality Assurance Technicians (more than 30
employees and more than 90% with Master
Degree or higher).
Looking towards the future, we will continue to
follow our inspiring vision. The future demands
that we be bold in our thinking – we will not
succeed if we act on this as something ordinary
.We must bear in mind that that the future

which require extraordinary and innovative

Our ambition for goals leverages potential.
We set targets and work every day to achieve
them. Thus we challenge ourselves and strive
to do more and better. Our goals are SMART-
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-
focused and Time-bound. This allows us to
achieve success faster and reach results that
please the customer.

At Ubiwhere we are very aware of the
importance of the environment and the threats
that technology and industry may pose if these
issues are left unconsidered. We believe our
job has great impact on this aspect. We want
to provide great conditions for our employees
without harming the environment. We ensure
a safe and healthy environment where our
ecological footprint is minimized. To do so, we
try to reduce the amount of energy and water
as much as possible, our waste materials are
recycled and cleaning components are as
environmentally friendly as possible. Moreover,
we distribute our software electronically, we
try to print the least we can, and opt for digital
files, emails, phone and conference calls. We
also try to perform our business electronically,
using web-based product demonstration
and we take pride and appreciate the green
spaces in our premises. We aim to review our
environmental policy at least on an annual
basis to improve our performance and quality.

NEW
OFFICE
Clean, minimalist and sunny are the words that most define
Ubiwhere’s new offices. Inaugurated in October 2017, the
new Headquarters and R&D Center are brand new and full of
light. We are very proud of our new home, that we believe that
has brought a new energy and a more welcoming workplace
environment. The new premises, with a simple and open space
design, ease the communication between each department and
among the different departments.
Our new office has proven to bring more energy and motivation
to the company. It’s a cozy and energetic place that promotes
creativity and where people like to be and work. In the city
center of Aveiro, right next to the train station, the University
of Aveiro and our main partners, our new space has certainly
refreshed our team, our business, our future.
It certainly was a remarkable and memorable
day where we were able to share some
quality time with great people and celebrate
our success. Ubiwhere is proud to have
inaugurated the Headquarters and R&D
Center. We are very happy with our premises
that are brand new and full of light. The simple
and open space design has brought a lighter
and more welcoming workplace environment.
It has made it easier to share knowledge and
work as a team with people who have expertise
in different areas.
Our new office has proven to bring more

On October 12, Ubiwhere opened the doors of
its new home, where the New Offices’ Official
Inauguration and to its first Open Day occurred.
In a ceremony chaired by the European
Commissioner Carlos Moedas, hundreds of
people were present, including employees,
clients, partners and friends, highlighting the
presence of the Mayor of Aveiro, Eng. Ribau
Esteves; the Rector of the University of Aveiro,
Professor Manuel Assunção and Professor Ana
Abrunhosa, President of CCDR-C.
In the year of the celebration of its 10th
Anniversary, the technology company focused
on smart cities and telecommunications
inaugurated its Headquarters and R&I Center.
In addition to the inaugural ceremony,
Ubiwhere presented, on its first Open Day,

& BUSINESS GALA DINNER
some of its main R&I projects and solutions in the
areas in which it operates. At the same time, the
PROEF Group and EFACEC also presented the
20M€ “New Ideas” Fund, to invest in the smart
cities, telecommunications and energy sectors. It
certainly was a remarkable and memorable day
where we were able to share some quality time
with great people and celebrate our success.
Finished the Official Inauguration and Open Day,
Ubiwhere had also a Business Gala Dinner with
some of its main clients and partners. This was
an event where we can be closer to the persons
that contribute towards to our progress and
success, sharing our past and talking about a
promising future together. For Ubiwhere, this
was a day that will be in our memories for long
days.

INVESTMENT
Proef Group acquired 20% of Ubiwhere’s capital, thus consolidating
strategic partnership between both companies. The common vision is now
enriched by the complementary valences of each company, thus giving
response to the new challenges that the market brings.
Focused on Research and Innovation of software-based solutions in the areas
of Smart Cities, Telecommunications and Internet of the Future, Ubiwhere takes
a significant step in its history with the integration in Proef Group. The know-
how of this technological company, allied to the business ecosystem and the
strong international presence of the Proef Group, potentiates the creation of
competitive synergies and differentials in the various sectors in its activity is
carried out.
In highly demanding and competitive markets, this new partnership arises in the
scope of Proef Group’s bet in key areas such as, IT and telecommunications, in
order to maximize the offer of integrated solutions to its clients, reinforcing the
degree of differentiation, innovation, quality and rigour.
The establishment of these partnerships represents new business opportunities,
which envisage a future full of common demanding challenges. Both companies
are now highly focused in creating new solutions that solves the demanding

Our company has consolidate and become solid since
September, 2007. Choosing where to establish ourselves meant
strategic thinking. We wanted to be in technological places and
align that with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Therefore our
offices are located in Aveiro, Coimbra, Porto, Lisboa, Cologne
and Paris. These places are close to prestigious universities
that are well-known all over the world and where reputed
international companies are located. We believe we have the
best expertise working alongside with us and that we are
surrounded by a great environment full of life and energy, with
creative and dedicated people who want to succeed and give
their best every day.

AVEIRO
Our headquarters have been in Aveiro
since our beginning in September, 2007.
We believe that Aveiro is the ideal place for
our headquarters. In fact, the city is well
known in the technological field, and has
many opportunities to explore. In Aveiro we
can find institutions such as the Institute
of Telecommunications of Aveiro pole, the
headquarters of PT Inovação SA and Nokia
Siemens Networks pole. It is also a great place
to establish good and long lasting strategic
partnerships and synergies. We like to stay
in touch with talents from the university and
work alongside with motivated people with
entrepreneurial spirit. In this way, the support
of the Unit of Technology Transfer from
University of Aveiro and the University of Aveiro
Business Incubator (IEUA) was very important.
COIMBRA
We have had an office in Coimbra since 2013.
Our office is in Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN),
an institution that, in 2010 was awarded the
best business incubator in the world. This was
important while choosing the location of the
office. Another important aspect had to do with
the proximity to the University of Coimbra and
its transfer of technology. We believe in the
potential of motivated students and in young
and outstanding talent. Coimbra is also close to
some of our good partners. The industrial pole
was also important while making our decision.
In 2016, with the entrance of new elements
in the team, we also increased our offices in
IPN. This office is focused on developing and
providing the best solutions and works directly
with our headquarters and R&D Center, in
Aveiro.
PORTO
Since we belong to Proef Group, we also
have the opportunity to share their offices, in
Porto and Lisboa. Situated on the slopes of
the Douro River, the city of Porto has become
a technological reference worldwide. The
quality of human resources trained at the
University of Porto, the innovation ecosystem,
with particular emphasis on the role of UPTEC,
and the positioning of the city as a launching
platform for other markets add three factors
of attractiveness to national and international
stakeholders. A unique combination of people,
services and business environment of Porto is
a great competitive advantage.
LISBOA
Lisbon is turning into the technological
capital of Europe and has become a major
center for innovation and technology, for
the scientific capacity, and for the entire
business environment it holds. The city has
an increasingly rich and complete business
network with the installation of many
technology companies, which join companies
that have a strong presence in the city or
that are in the process of strengthening their
operations such as IBM, Vodafone, Portugal
Telecom, Microsoft, among others.
PARIS (EU PRESENCE)
Besides being the French capital, Paris is the
economic and commercial capital of France,
where Stock Exchange and finance businesses
are concentrated.
COLOGNE (EU PRESENCE)
With about seventy thousand students,
Cologne is considered one of Germany’s largest
cultural, tourist and economic centers.

As we all know, the telecommunications industry is always changing. New
improvements are found and interesting opportunities are raised for service
providers. With our focus always on the customer’s and society needs, our

SELFNET - H2020
CO-FUNDED:
The proposed SELFNET project will design
and implement an autonomic network
management framework to achieve self
organizing capabilities in managing network
infrastructures by automatically detecting
and mitigating a range of common network
problems that are currently still being manually
addressed by network operators, thereby
significantly reducing operational costs and
improving user experience. SELFNET explores
a smart integration of state-of-the-art
technologies in Software-Defined Networks
(SDN), Network Function Virtualization
(NFV), Self-Organizing Networks (SON),
Cloud computing, Artificial intelligence,
Quality of Experience (QoE) and Next-
generation networking to provide a novel
intelligent network management framework
that is capable of assisting network operators
in key management tasks: automated network
monitoring by the automatic deployment of
NFV applications to facilitate system-wide
awareness of Health of Network metrics to
have more direct and precise knowledge about
the real status of the network; autonomic
network maintenance by defining high-level
tactical measures and enabling autonomic
corrective and preventive actions against
existing or potential network problems.
SELFNET is driven by use cases designed
to address major network management
problems including Self-protection capabilities
against distributed cyber-attacks, Self-healing
capabilities against network failures, and
Self-optimization to dynamically improve the
performance of the network and the QoE of
the users. SELFNET is designed within this
economic and business context to substantially
reduce operational costs of network operators
by automating a significant number of current
labour-intensive network management tasks.
Therefore, SELFNET directly addresses the
Strand Network Management challenge
highlighted by the EC.

platform:
Access profiles - we can outline differential
profiles of users;
User connection history - KPI;
Comparison - between customers’ Internet
connections and equivalent ISP services in
their area;
Proprietary mechanism to identify the
uniqueness of an Internet access;
Statistical reports;
Available in different ways - The app is
available whether for desktop (Windows,
MAC OS and Linux) or for mobile devices
(Android and iOS).
Measure of the following
network indicators:
Latency, jitter (packet delay variation) and
pack loss;
Download/upload speed;
Net neutrality;
Traffic shaping;
Web page access and load time.
This is a Quality of Service (QoS)
measurement System for internet access
provided by an ISP in a region or country.
On the one hand, users can compare their
aggregated results with the ones from the
street, city or country (because we are offering
crowdsourcing data) and with this, they can
analyse the quality they are actually having.
On the other hand, telecom’s regulators can
evaluate the quality of service that the ISP is
proving which foments competitiveness in the
internet area and contributes to an increase of
quality of the service.
CO-FUNDED:
NET.MEDE PRO
This platform monitors the quality of service
for the internet access that an ISP provides
in a region or country but it does this based
on a system of open participation which is
able to extract metrics based on a set of tests
performed by the end-users in residential
environments.
The platform gives customers what we think
they want, the possibility to evaluate in a
simple, safe and accurate way, a set of technical
parameters related to the service provided by
the end-user ISP. So customers get to know the
real speed of internet connection in their PC,
smartphones or tablets. They can also check
their history of conducted tests and then they
can analyse if the operator is really providing
the accorded internet speed by comparing the
agreed speed with the obtained results.
With this, the NET.mede Pro ensures that
companies provide services that fulfil at
least the minimal requirements in terms
of quality and monitoring of signal.
Moreover, it promotes increasingly better
levels of internet quality and stimulates
competitiveness among internet
providers.

SONATA - H2020
(Service Programming and Orchestration for
Virtualized Software Networks Project)
We believe we are working for the next
generation of communication network and
services. This is an open source project, so we
think that the sharing of information will lead us to
achieve better results. In this line of thought, this
EU-funded project, which now has 2 years (began
in July, 2015), counts with the help of extremely
qualified people. 15 partners from all sorts of
expertise - telecom operators, manufactures,
system integrators, service providers, SME
developers, research and academic institutes
(such as ATOS Spain SA, Telefónica Investigación
y Desarrollo S.A.U., PT Inovação e Sistemas SA,
British Telecom PLC, NEC Europe Ltd, iMinds
VZW, Thales Communications and Security SAS,
and many other renowned companies in Europe)
- give their best every day to achieve flexible
programmability of 5G network, a revolution that
is becoming a reality.
The project is trying to give an adequate answer
to some complex challenges regarding the
development and deployment of the complex
services envisioned for 5G networks and
empowered by the SDN (Software Defined
Networking) and NFV (Network Function
Virtualization) technologies.
SONATA is focused on virtualized function
networks. The intention is to enable both the
telecom operators and the vendors to do
flexible programmability of the networks and
help to deploy and orchestrate new services
in the network. So it targets both the flexible
programmability of software networks and
the optimization of their deployments. The
project will support network function chaining and
orchestration, make service platforms modular
and easier to customize to the needs of different
service providers, and introduce a specialized
DevOps model for supporting developers.
The project has 3 mains goals:
1. Provide an NAV enabled SDK;
2. Monitor what is going on in the
infrastructure;
3. Support and extend the DevOps models.
Regarding the first listed goal, we aim to provide
developers with a set of tools and, with this, to
ease their work. By doing so, they will be able
to create and edit a network service and even
test it, whether it is in a local environment or in
an emulator. So, it will be possible to create a
package of this network service.
We will also have a service platform. This platform
will be responsible for the deployment of this
network service. The platform will have an open
manual framework that is modular. This is great
because it will allow us to have control of the
placement, of the execution and of the life cycle of
different BNF. With this we will be able to achieve
a remarkable goal and to monitor everything that
is happening in the infrastructure.
Going a bit further we can also think about our
third, and very important goal. This will allow
us to support and extend the DevOps models.
With this project we are considering both parts -
developers and the operational people. From our
point of view, this holistic view is important.

We want to develop a real time radio electric
spectrum monitoring system which is able to
monitor 90% of wireless communications. The
aim of this project is to build a low cost probe
which is able to measure the broadest band
possible, including bands from 30MHz to 6GHz
(UHF and micro-waves). The probe should
be capable of being seamlessly integrated
into a mechanical structure that ensures
easy installation in both urban and rural
environments with concerns about its visual
impact as well as vandalism.
This is a R&D co-funded project that counts
with Ubiwhere, Wavecom and IT - Institute
of Telecommunication. Together, the three
companies form a consortium and each
one gives their contribution in their area of
expertise. Ubiwhere is the main responsible
team for the specification, development
and testing of Widemonitor’s central
service solution both backend and frontend
components.
The idea of this project is to develop a cloud
based centralized system that gathers
measurements from probes and provides an
extensive set of statistics, graphs and reports.
From the centralized system, authorized users
are able to configure all probes without having
to physically visit each probe’s location. It will
allow:
- High availability;
- Data exportation;
- Complex event processing 	
features;
- Permission management;
- Quality of signal features;
- Probe configuration;
- Probe provisioning.
We identified that there was a need for higher
spatial resolution in the spectral monitoring.
The area of coverage at high frequencies are
communications. They are making increasing
spectral reuse and channel with a high density
of radio transmitters.
This means that any monitoring system makes
available spectrum probes, installed in large
quantities, in a tight space matrix. While this
happens system costs (prices per probe) are
compatible with the budgets of regulatory
and supervisory bodies. The measurements
that are collected are then stored stored in a
centralized, multi-tenant with high availability
and able to handle high volumes of statistical
data, enabling: sorting, searching, graphs,
statistics and alerts. The regulator must have
an effective intelligence on the collected data.
WIDEMONITOR
It is important that these parameters and
measurements collected are easy, economic
and safe, using the internet and ensuring the
security of data sent. On the other hand, the
operational management of remote devices, for
support and maintenance has to be simple and
fluid because we are doing this for people.
We also want the measurement bandwidth to
be as broad as possible. We are working so
it covers bands from 30 MHz to 6GHz (UHF
and microwave), more relevant in wireless
emissions.
Moreover, it should also allow people to
monitor network with high spatial resolution.
This allows one to identify and measure
emissions that mitigate a lot from distance,
preventing its monitoring of otherwise than in
proximity. Another important aspect is that the
probes are easy to install in several scenarios:
urban, semi-urban or rural, a logic of monolithic
installation, not dependent on the existence
of utility power distribution and characteristics
that minimise vandalism or theft.

The world faced some huge developments
and our digital footprint is becoming bigger
and bigger everyday. It is now possible to find
out a lot about people’s personal life, track
them, know what they like, where they live,
their secret passwords, information about
their families and even more personal details.
People are losing the private part of their
“personal” lives and becoming a file stored
somewhere they don’t even dream about. The
data that is stolen isn’t always related to people
but also about companies. Of course, money
continues to have major importance in the
world. In fact, only by analysing the US case,
companies suffer annual losses of more than
525 million US dollars due to cyber crime. One
can steal thousands of dollars without even
leaving the bed. It is known that cybercrime is a
threat that aims to reach not only the economy
but also society all over the world. We ought to
ensure that safeness and security of services,
infrastructures, information (among which
we can find personal and sensitive data) and,
most of all, of people is guaranteed. Therefore,
cybercrime is the core concern of this project.
This European R&D project, co-funded by
SHIELD - H2020
EC under GA 700199, counts with the help
of the most competent professionals from
the consortium of 12 focused companies
from a wide variety of countries. These
companies realised that there was a lack
of open-source tools for cyber security,
leveraging massive analytics capabilities.
Moreover, a huge momentum of open
technologies for big data was becoming a
reality. Expensive and specialized hardware
for information security (high CAPEX) was
also required and the emergence of “security
as-a-service” paradigm, based on cloud and
NFV led to the need of a specialized team.
SHIELD arised on the huge momentum of
Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV), as
currently standardised by ETSI, in order to
virtualise security appliances into virtual
Network Security Functions (vNSFs),
to be instantiated within the network
infrastructure using NFV technologies
and concepts, effectively monitoring and
filtering network traffic in a distributed
manner.
SHIELD’s team had trusted computing skills,
and ability to deal with big data analysis
and network functions virtualization. So
the consortium emerged with the idea of
presenting to the world security as a service
and based on network functions virtualization.
SHIELD project proposes an universal solution
for dynamically establishing and deploying
virtual security infrastructures into ISP and
corporate networks. These virtualized network
security functions (vNSFs) are instantiated
within the network infrastructure in order to
effectively monitor and filter network traffic in a
distributed manner. This was, SHIELD believes
to be protecting citizens from people who even
dare to try to threat them.

The world faced some changes and we can
see many differences when compared with
the early 90’s. Introduced in the 1980’s, the
world faced an interesting and brand-new
reality - the existence of wireless telephone
technology, mobile communications. The first
generation (1G) was able to make voice calls
in one country. The 1G network used analog
signal and had access to speed up to 2.4kbps.
It was a revolution to the world. But evolution
continued and the second generation was able
to send text messages between two cellular
devices. The third generation was thrilled with
the introduction of a new function on their
mobiles - people were now able to do much
more than just make phone calls or text,
they could browse the internet! The fourth
generation was able to do all of that but, on top
of this, people could also download and upload
large video files without any problems.
We want to continue to amaze the world
and overcome their expectations. The fifth
generation of wireless/mobile internet will
be astonished with all the news this change
represents. Texting or making phone calls (even
if we are talking about video calls) is not the

This will facilitate a cloud-like 5G infrastructure
able to support rapid, dynamic, and
customisable deployment and operation
of virtualized network functions (VNFs) and
services, or network apps composed of those
virtualized elements. A municipality will host
thousands of 5G Small Cells with processing
and storage capabilities and it will become itself
a giant distributed cloud infrastructure, which
can be seen as an open environment for service
deployment.
We do know we will have to face some harsh
technical challenges but for that purpose we
know we can count on the help of extremely
competent and focused people from over 18
companies. Our goal is to maximize the ROI
(return on investment) for the entire market
chain. We will build and deploy a common
and multi-tenant distributed cloud and radio
platform for 5G neutral hosts (open access).
Such collaborative effort will allow for greater
synergy between telecommunication and
infrastructure providers, SMEs and also
municipalities, maximizing the return on
investment.
With its strong NFV and MEC expertise,
Ubiwhere will co-design, develop and deploy
the needed infrastructure and platform
to showcase the technology across three
different use cases deployed in Barcelona,
Bristol and Lucca.

they need. So 5G will be a revolution in that it
will allow a great increase of internet speed.
People will be able to download and upload
ultra HD and 3D videos. This change will also

to enter to our daily world. One will be able
to upgrade data connection from a garden
hose to a fire hose. The difference will be
astonishing.
5G City project aims to design, develop, deploy
and demonstrate, in operational conditions,
a distributed cloud and radio platform for
municipalities and infrastructure owners acting
as 5G neutral hosts. One of the paradigms that
we are focused on is called edge computing.
We believe that this demands extension of
cloud architectures all the way to the edge of
the network, close to the devices that produce

This project is focused on maritime communications. We realized it was
important to serve communities who operate in a sea environment (e.g.
fisherman, sea shipping recreational craft and national marinas) with reliable
and broadband connections. The digital inclusion of maritime communities is
also an important aspect and can be leveraged if we try to converge with land
communications. Therefore, with the support of INESCTEC, Wavecom, Centro de
Investigação Naval, Compete 2020 and the European Union, we believe that
this project will allow:
MARECOM
New MIMO communication architecture, which will take into account,
specific configurations of multiple antennas adequated to the propagation
of radio in the marine environment;
Design and implementation of multi-band MIMO antennas, which allows
the definition of a radiation diagram, adequate to the requirements of the
marine environment;
Development of a new access protocol adapted to these environments,
foressing the sea wave movements and the maritime radio propagation
conditions, in order to ensure wireless and reliable connections with high
availability;
Development of a new routing protocol, that allows the creation of multi-
hop networks formed by fixed or mobile platforms (e.g. offshore wind
generators and vessels), for a wider reach, availability and extension of the
terrestrial networks;
Development of applications to support the activity of maritime
communities - e.g. fisherman and navy.
With this, we will be able to provide maritime communications with high
availability, broadband and with a low cost.

SMART
CITIES
As time goes by, the population is growing and the percentage of urban
population is rising. In fact, cities use up to 80% of the world’s resources while
occupying only 2% of the global territory. This is boosting several problems such
as the difficulty on planning and managing this fast and forced urbanization,
facing these scary climate changes, the lack of drinkable water, the extreme
droughts and floods, and even the increasingly higher stress levels of citizens
on their daily basis. As fancy as it may seem, the smart cities movement is not a
luxury and not only addressed to main cities with a lot of money and population.
It is about providing people with the best solutions for their daily life problems, it
is about involving regular people from regular jobs and trying to understand the
problems of each single one of them and provide the best solutions. It is about
sustainability, it is about ensuring that we can wake up to a (better) tomorrow.
We need to try to consider both parts - people’s goals and the effects these life
changes have on the planet and in their lives. While thinking about smart cities,
we can consider a wide variety of areas. Our company is giving its contribution by
focusing on mobility, tourism, energy and efficient resource management.

EMBERS
(Enabling a Mobility Back-End as a Robust Service)
EMBERS is an european co-funded R&D project
that counts with extremely qualified experts
from Ubiwhere, UPMC (Université Pierre and
Marie Curie), Inria, Fraunhofer, FOKUS and
Technische Universität Berlin. The plan intends
to Enable a Mobility Back-End Robust Service
interoperable via Open APIs using interfaces
compliant to oneM2M, ETSI M2M, FIWARE NGSI
and OMA LWM2M.
EMBERS will bring to market a back-end for
smart city mobility that is developed by a
European small enterprise based upon its
smart parking and smart traffic management
products that two municipalities in Portugal
currently deploy. The Mobility Back-end as
a Service (MBaaS) replaces such all-in-one
systems, in which a municipality purchases the
full set of components from a single vendor.
Instead, the city manager can purchase best-
of-breed devices and apps developed by third
parties, with the only constraint being that they
interoperate with the back-end via a free, open,
smart city mobility API. This domain-specific
API lowers barriers to entry for app and device
developers, making it easier for innovative
SMEs to enter the market. Furthermore, the
EMBERS will offer to firms, start-ups and freelancers the
tools they need to build their business. It will provide open
interfaces and simple SDKs ready to use, such as:
TRAFFIC
EMBERS will give you access to real-time
information about the vehicles travelling
the streets of your city through open M2M
interfaces;
PARKING
EMBERS won’t let you waste time assembling
a server for real-time parking events, since it
provides you with standardized interfaces on
Mobility data;
ROUTING
EMBERS will allow you to benefit from an
intelligent and reliable engine that offers you
the best path, based on the vehicle attributes,
street properties and road events;
ENVIRONMENT
EMBERS will provide you access to free libraries
and SDKs that allow you to readily obtain air
quality measurements from your city in your
new application. This project is headed to its
third promising year.
API is offered via a variety of generic interfaces,
including oneM2M, SmartM2M, OMA LwM2M,
and FIWARE NGSI. EMBERS thus clears the way
for developers and to municipalities that have
adopted any one of these potential emerging
machine-to-machine (M2M) communication
standards. Beyond its primary goal of bringing
the MBaaS to market, EMBERS will stimulate
development of an entire ecosystem around
the MBaaS smart city mobility API. Separating
out the back-end from the other components
will, however, require rigorous testing.
EMBERS will experiment with the system on
two testbeds that are part of the FIRE+ OneLab
facility: the FUSECO Playground, for M2M
communications, and FIT IoT-LAB, for wireless
sensor devices. EMBERS will host a hackathon
and an app challenge to bring in third party
developers. The project will also include three
demonstrators by third parties via an open call.
These activities will contribute back to FIRE+
by demonstrating successful experimentation
by SMEs developing close-to-market products.
The project will also conduct real world pilots in
two or more cities as a final step in bringing the
MBaaS to market.

SMART WATER
CONSUMPTION APP
The Smart Water Consumption App is a free
mobile app that allows people to manage their
water usage and costs. With this app families
can track their water counters, get tips to
use the water in a more conscious way and
understand where they are spending water. In
this way, families can use the app for monthly
matters (water counters communication),
increasing efficiency regarding water usage.
Moreover, users can have access to the
different components in their supplied water.
Besides this, the app has a backoffice,
which is very important since it allows user
management. In fact, this backoffice provides
KPIs with water consumption, metrics and
stats about water quality, alerts about leeks
and anomalies, it has a push notifications and
communication section, content management
and notifications regarding water management.
It gives an important overview and prediction
of water supply and improves water supply
efficiency. Also, it is a decision helper, provides
a fast response to water supply infrastructures
and assures a better assets management. It
permits one to integrate existing management
platforms. Since it has been developed in a
modularity manner, changes can be made and
the solution can be adapted to specific needs.

SYMBIOTE - H2020
We live in a more connected world. Smart
networked devices are a very important help.
For some this is even considered a basic need,
as every day new apps emerge. People use
them in many situations, from leisure to work,
from day to day decisions to the longer term
ones. The world is more and more connected
and thousands of apps, focused on different
purposes, can be found. However, in order to
be able to have access to all of this, customers
need a wide variety of apps. The current IoT
ecosystem is fragmented: the series of vertical
solutions that exist today and that integrate
connected objects within local environments
and using purpose-specific implementations,
also connect smart spaces with a back-end
cloud hosting dedicated often to proprietary
software components. Creating a platform
that adapts to the needs and places where
customers are, where changing smart
environments doesn’t imply using different
apps and where safety and transparency is
assured while using the resources across
various IoT domains seems a good and
important idea.
Since this is a big and wide challenge, the
European Union gave an incentive and
gathered 14 companies, including Ubiwhere,
which formed a consortium, with experts
from a wide variety of fields to work in the so
called “symbloTe project” (symbiosis of smart
objects across IoT environments). This is an
european co-funded R&D project. Ubiwhere’s
contribution has been mainly focused on
the Smart Mobility & Ecological Urban
Routing, since we proudly are the leaders
on the topic. The goal of this project is to
help solve the issue of transport inefficiency
and poor air quality that many European
cities have. symbloTe’s primary target group
are SMEs. The idea is to create a platform -
only one - that would be capable of adapting
itself to the smart environment, providing a
faster and easier way of showing information
and, above all, more organized and wider
range of offers. The platform should be able to
interact with nearby IoT platforms and develop
cross-domain applications for third-party IoT
platforms. symbloTe intends to providing
a “unified view” on various platforms and
their resources, so that platform resources
are transparent to application designers
and developers. In addition, symbIoTe also
implements IoT platform federations so that
they can securely interoperate, collaborate,
share resources and support the migration of
smart objects between various IoT domains
and platforms. For this to be possible,
symbIoTe will design and implement an Open
Source mediation prototype. symbloTe opens
up the potential for innovative business
models that are incrementally deployable.
Plus, it removes the strict separation between
IoT islands to create an environment which
has significant impact on the market, is
attractive for a heterogeneous user group,
matches the dynamicity of modern life and is
helpful for various business, home and public
infrastructure use cases. This project is now
headed towards its third and last year and we
believe it will have a very satisfying result.

Europe and Mexico, working side by side
towards the same goal, this is what Smart SDK
intends to encourage. The goal is to create a
sustainable and long-lasting FIWARE ecosystem
where we can identify and leverage successful
FIWARE outcomes in Europe and build
reference standards for common challenges.
SmartSDK aims at creating a sustainable
FIWARE ecosystem between Europe and
Mexico by leveraging on existing FIWARE
outcomes and building reference standards for
common challenges.
The idea is to identify successful FIWARE
applications deployed in Europe. After doing
so, the project should be able to establish
a set of FIWARE-based reference service
architectures and reference data model to
support the agile development of smart
solutions for sustainability challenges.
In this perspective, SmartSDK will adopt
existing Open Standards and Open Source
solutions, leveraging on results of European
and Mexican initiatives based on FIWARE. By
creating a reference Software Development Kit
(SDK) the project will cultivate a nice and solid
collaboration between Europe and Mexico. This
may be important regarding future societal
and/or economical challenges.
SMARTSDK - H2020
We believe that this project will ease and
promote increased FIWARE adoption in Mexico.
This will have wide impact in both sides. In
order to achieve the best results and to insure
that we truly are creating an equitative and
successful ecosystem, FIWARE will evolve
people, cities, innovative SMEs and startups
in the process of change. By doing so, we will
support the growth of new FIWARE-based
businesses through the direct involvement
of a network of around ICT 30 incubators
and accelerators, with access to more than
1000 ICT Innovative companies and startups
and the support of Wayra Mexico (owned by
Telefonica), the local branch of the worldwide
largest accelerator.
In order to foster this vision and culture, the
project counts with FIWARE partners from
both sides of the ocean - Europe (TID, CREATE-
NET); and Mexico (INFOTEC, ITESM). European
startups are also playing an important role, by
working in order to provide FIWARE technology
(HOPU, UBI). At the same time, Future Internet
researchers from Mexico (CECISE, CENIDET,
INAOE) give their best every day. Moreover
R&D consultant specialist and a key promoter
of FIWARE internationalization (MARTEL) work
very hard in order to make this dream possible
come true.

SYNCHRONICITY - H2020
The SynchroniCity is an
innovative project that
intends to create a Single
Digital City Market for
Europe.
The vision of SynchroniCity is not only to pioneer the establishment of
such an environment but to pilot it in reference zones across 8 European
countries addressing 3 key IoT-enabled smart city application areas.
These reference zones are based on cities at the forefront of smart city
development covering different geographies, cultures and sizes and include
Antwerp (BE), Carouge (CH), Eindhoven (NL), Helsinki (FI), Manchester
(UK), Milano (IT), Porto (PT) and Santander (ES). Globally, SynchroniCity
adds committed replicating reference zones, including Léon (Mexico) and
Seongnam (Korea). The project already connects 35 partners from different
continents.
This project counts with the solid and wide knowledge of hard-working people all
over Europe, people from several initiatives (such as OASC, FIWARE, FIRE, EIPSCC)
and with important partners who have leading roles in standardization bodies
(like ITU, ETSI, IEEE, OMA, IETF). From this team of experts SynchroniCity will be
born. SynchroniCity will provide a balanced ecosystem for IoT-enabled smart
city solutions where IoT device manufacturers, system integrators and solution
providers can innovate and openly compete.
With an already emerging foundation,
SynchroniCity will establish a reference
architecture for the envisioned IoT-
enabled city market place with identified
interoperability points and interfaces and
data models for different verticals. This
will include tools for co-creation & integration
of legacy platforms & IoT devices for urban
services and enablers for data discovery,
access and licensing lowering the barriers for
participation on the market. SynchroniCity will
pilot these foundations in the reference zones
together with a set of citizen-centred services
in three high impact areas, showing the value
to cities, businesses and citizens involved,
linked directly to the global market. With a
running start, SynchroniCity takes an inclusive
approach and serves as lighthouse initiative
to inspire others - cities and business - to join
the established ecosystem and contribute to
the emerging marketplace by participating on
a second wave of successful pilots. They will
strengthen the ecosystem by creating a positive
ripple effect throughout Europe, and globally,
to establish a strong European presence in
a global digital single market of IoT-enabled
solutions.

FIWARE
FIWARE can be seen as the link between two
main groups: companies and cities.
Regarding cities, Open and Agile Smart Cities
already include over 100 cities, spread over
22 countries. These companies, among which
we can find Ubiwhere, work to make open
and agile cities possible and real. The goal is
to implement driven standards in smart cities.
This part is focused on:
- Common IPIs à FIWARE NGSI;
- Platform for open data/API publication;
- Standard Data Models à CitySDK and more;
- Driven by implementation approach.
TMForum include over 850 companies spread
over 180 countries. It focuses on:
- Smart City Business Requirements;
- Smart City Maturity & Bench marketing
models;
- Smart Cities Reference Architecture;
- City as a Platform supporting the Data
Economy.
So FIWARE comes as a link between these.
FIWARE aspires to build a
common space to share
information and make it
easier to create a holistic
view.
We are focused on high quality and on solid
participation. It is important to use a common
language because this will allow portability
of solutions. The goal is to make real-time
approaches possible and to understand how
to do this. One key factor is the sharing of
knowledge, so we need to ask ourselves, how
to stimulate people to share knowledge. One
suggestion that seems good is to enable data
economy. Cities are doing a good job but an
important question is how to execute and
adopt solutions. Sharing a vision is good but
it is not enough. It is extremely important to
convert the vision into real execution and then
assure consolidation of results.
Ubiwhere’s participation in FIWARE, came, in
fact, as a result of its on-going market due to
our participation in other projects such as FP7
and H2020. It was a step towards consolidating
and leveraging trusted technology to create
interoperable, standards-based ways to unify
our Smart City solutions.The project is going
really well, and developers are becoming
progressively more attentive. With this
platform, we have access to a great deal of
APIs. So, we can access many application
programming interfaces, and therefore, it
becomes easier to develop Smart Applications
in multiple vertical sectors.
This is extremely interesting because, it will
be possible to access the information of
the Smart Cities’ solutions and data sources
evolved from one only platform. Ubiwhere
contributes with a wide variety of systems
for Smart Parking and Traffic Management,
Smart Waste Management, and Smart
Environmental Monitoring, along with its City
Control Center, which allows for centralised
management of the city’s ecosystem.
This has allowed Ubiwhere to set up a
sophisticated Smart City infrastructure
powered by standards and interoperable at
its core.
Porto was the first challenge. As Porto is
a big city in Portugal, and member of the
Open and Agile Smart Cities initiative, we
thought it would be a good idea to set-up
the Porto Smart City Node. More projects
are going to emerge from all parts of the
country, but we are happy to say that Porto
is now considered a Smart City and a very
innovative portuguese city adopting FIWARE
standards. By working together with us,
Porto now has interfaces that bring access
to real-time, contextual environmental
data from 75 fixed and mobile units
(monitoring stations) located across the
city. These tools first came together in the
Hackacity Porto challenge, in June 2015, and
are since then an integral part of Ubiwhere’s
expansion efforts throughout the country,
the European continent and the world. This
achievement made us be referenced as a
FIWARE Smart Ciies Success Story and led
to international success and recognition
in events in the USA (i.e. FIWARE Mundus),
Brasil (i.e. Beyond2020, Hackacity Tour)
among others. We had the opportunity to
talk about our experience and FIWARE use-
cases. This eases international recognition
and is very gratifying for all the company and
employees.

This project started with the idea of enabling
tourism and ease tourists’ lives. A group of
dedicated people from Ubiwhere, IDTour and
University of Aveiro, formed a consortium and
they are working hard in this R&I co-funded
project in order to present to society
a digital platform that will help them
promoting and commercialise touristic
experiences.
Technology met many fields. It contributed
to an increase of sales by eliminating queues,
providing a better stock management and
even allowing customers to get to know more
products and promotions, encouraging them
to buy in all the comfort of their homes.
Technology has bond with many services,
tourism is not an exception. The Statistics
Portal states that in 2017 online travel sales
worldwide was responsible for 629.81 billion
US. dollars and the increase tendency is
expected to continue.
The consortium is trying to make the best of
both worlds. On the one hand it is built upon
new and emerging sales channels as well as
with strong and highly dynamic marketing and
communication techniques and tools. It counts
with big data capabilities, and self-adaptive
tools that continuously fit customers’ and
providers’ needs by interpreting internal and
external sources of data.

issues for local providers - questions regarding

approach. It mixes existing ago-social network
and messaging channel booking (FB,Twitter,
Whatsapp, SMS booking).

Moreover, it deals with Dynamic and Surge
Pricing Schemes, where demand-side pricing
techniques are applied in real-time. Machine
learning content and marketing optimisation
are also important. Leveraging on the
information collected on customers and their
preferences it’s easier to adjust marketing
and sales content, and B2B APIs. With this,
we can provide the means to create end-user
applications, new business cases and create
a deeper understanding of customers and
markets, revolutionising the way small business

TASTE PORTUGAL
Portugal is a very singular and special country.
Everyday people drink unique coffee, our fruit
is delicious and its smell enriches every room.
Christmas has a special taste with the delicious
codfish, with one of the best olive oil in the
world and great wine. People and food warm
the country with hard working farmers and
cooks that give their best everyday to present
delicious presents in our table, making Portugal
a must regarding gastronomy. Many want to
discover the secret of this delicious food and it
is simple. It is the result of passionate, cheerful,
dedicated and authentic people.
AHRESP wants to help people being able
to discover all these wonders and present
to them a guide to ensure that they can
make the most of their experience. We
want people to get to know the wonders of
our traditions and present to them the best
restaurants to that end. Therefore our first
goal is to present a network of portuguese
restaurants in the world (not only Portugal but
also other countries such as France, Spain,
Brazil, Germany and UK). They should also
be able to taste the delicious pastry that our
country has to offer, as well as the mysterious
ways to make wonderful bread.
The second target is to make a gastronomic
platform - taste Portugal.This will ease the food
tasting contest of delicious traditional dishes
such as the cheese from Serra da Estrela,
Alheira or our olive oil, the gracious way to cure
salt distinguished as one of the bests in the
world.
We also want to draw a catalogue of products
from each region with gastronomical interest.
From this people will be able to see, for
example that they should try “Pastéis de Belém”
if they go to Belem, “ovos moles” if they want to
go to Aveiro,“Pão de Ló” if they go to Ovar, find
out the best places to try sardine, and where
to find the best pastry for them. Moreover, we
want to provide a space where people can find
the fabulous recepies of our products, with
illustrations that ease the bakering from their
own houses.
It is alto important to advertise the brand. To
do so, it is important to be part of international
events, and share our ideas with several means
of communications. We will give new worlds to
the world.

PRIO APP
This year, Prio app faced some changes. One of the challenges that Prio was
facing regarding the gas bottles commerce was that people had some difficulties
in transporting them (for example legal barriers regarding transporting gas
bottles in cars), and they also found it hard to carry them into their houses. This
led Ubiwhere and its partner, Prio, to focus more on the gas area. It became
clearer that one of the main disadvantages of buying gas bottles was the
transportation, so a new function was added to the existing app. People can
now order Prio’s gas bottles in an easier and faster way. Customers can choose
the gas bottle they need and they will arrive at their houses in the date and time
they want. To do so, customers don’t even have to leave their houses, they just
need to open the app and submit the order. This will promote the acquisition of
more gas bottles and also instigate the buying of bigger size bottles. It will also
contribute to an increase of the revenues and of the notoriety to the brand.
With a friendly mobile app, Prio will be able to answer its customers requests in
an easier and quicker way and customers will be more pleased since they will
save time, money and ensure their comfort and the good quality of the products.

SWISSHEAR UC-TIME
SwissHear is applicable to many practical
situations - watching TV, in the workplace, in
keeping up the chatting in restaurants and
cafés, in cinemas and concert hall where
hearing brings pleasure. In SwissHear,
the microphones and earphones of the
smartphone are used to amplify low voices
and decrease loud sounds, just as the
healthy ear is able to do.

The UC-Time system
provides new tools in the
time management process
of Coimbra University.
A PROJECT FROM A SWISS COMPANY:
The system is an interface for workers and
staff leaders in the time management process
of UC, and the overall system management is
left to the Human Resources department. The
principal target of this project is to manage
the time management process, facilitating
registering of worktimes, holidays, days off and
so on. The system works in harmony with the
human resources management system (SAP)

When people that direct competitors should
want to contribute to the good quality of
services of the other it not just a nice thing
to say. Let us imagine a small city in Portugal
with only two places to stay. Place A is
extremely good, employees are super nice
and polite, always trying to help clients with
the best regarding places to visit, food is
extremely tasteful, accommodation is very
clean and so the place represent high quality.
Place B is the opposite, so employees are
always grumpy, they make everything hard
and unpleasant, the place is not clean and
food is not that good. As human beings we
experience a phenomenon that psychologists
entitle the fallacy of composition. So
customers that visit place B will say that

the village has horrible accommodation
and advise their friends not to the village.
Therefore, place A will also be harmed.
Bearing this in mind, and also with the
knowledge that Local Accommodation is
growing due to the increase of investment

WINES OF
PORTUGAL
Ubiwhere has developed the new Wines of
Portugal’ mobile app. The platform allows
customers to choose the more adequate
wine to each person and situation. It intends
to promote the quality of Portugal wines
internationally. Combining a creative attitude
with the immense variety of terroirs, castes and
blends, Portugal produces unique and distinctive
wines, adding to the mission of producing’ wine,
a dimension of art. With a modern design, this
mobile app is user-friendly and aswers the
question of customers’ needs.
Each wine is produced under unique conditions.
There are differences in terroirs and climatic
conditions, differences in the art of making wine
and, finally, differences in character and taste,
which we want people to appreciate. So the
platform lets you select a region and then
provide customers a lack of wine options so
that clients can choose either from an A to
Z list or the closest production of wine and
get more information about the product. By
choosing a region, customers will also be able
to know a bit more about the culture of the
region and the history of Portugal. The platform
also allows them to get more information
about wine makers and wine tourism travels.
Moreover people can choose wine styles,
tasting rooms, and find out where to buy the
wine. So we will have well informed and pleased
customers.

Portugal happens is a new
brand, conceptualized
and created for A Loja das
Viagens.
Portugal Happens is a new brand, conceptualized and
created for A Loja das Viagens, focused on the promotion
and dissemination of irreverent tourist experiences for the
international market. In order to update all sales communication
experiences to the end-consumer and tour operators, the
challenge was to create a name for the brand as well as the
whole creative concept behind and, also, to support all digital
and offline communication materials. This branding concept was
totally created by our business partner OAKREATIVE. Ubiwhere
was totally responsible for the platform development. WIth
a friendly and optimized UI/UX design, this platform allows
customers to search for the best tourist experiences in Portugal.

Developed for ADENE, this platform allows customers to simulate the
costs we will have with electricity, gas, or both. To do so customers have
two options: the fastest way is for them to give details about their houses; the
second option is more advanced simulate engine in which people should provide
more specific and detailed information which characterize their consumption.
So the platform will present the list of all the electricity and / or natural gas
marketers registered by dgeg and providing tariffs for the residential sector. This
is important because, besides contributing for well informed citizens, it will open
the lack of choices that people have.
The platform will also ease the process of changing. We know human tend to be
adverse to changes. But even when people realize that they should change, many
do not do so because it is a lot of work. Therefore the platform will ease citizens
life. So, if customers want, they will be able to simulate the billings and choose
the most adequate tarife to them and change companies in an easier way; or, if
they already know which tarife they want, they can skip the simulation and quickly
change in an easy way!
Moreover the platform has tips for people to save energy, walking towards
a more efficient use of energy and a sustainable environment. These
solutions may be changing TV monitors for LED TV monitors, change for a class
A+ oven, or even implementing an usage of the solar thermal energy, among
many others. So this platform will ease customers’ life, decrease their energy
billings and even contribute for a better tomorrow, since it helps decreasing
wasting the so precious energy that our world has to offer.

The Water Consumption App is a free mobile
app that allows Águas do Porto customers
to monitor their water consumption and
receive several informations and alerts. This
app also allows residents to compare their
water consumption with others’ based on
profiles.
The Ubiwhere’s partnership with the Porto

CITIBRAIN:
THE KEY TO SMART
MONITORING PORTO AIR QUALITY
In 2015, the City of Porto adopted FIWARE
standards, becoming capable of collecting
and aggregating data from different providers.
Afterwards, Citibrain - a Portuguese consortium
focused on Smart Cities solutions - deployed 75
Air Quality stations in the city, monitoring the
environmental conditions in real time.
As a distinctly innovative city and the hometown
to a number of innovative projects aimed at
unlocking the full potential of technologies in
urban scenarios, Porto is part of the Open and
Agile Smart Cities (OASC) initiative (according to
its website, “a global initiative connecting cities,
advocating de facto standards, and sharing
best practices”). In the past years, Porto has
been investing in an open platform to integrate
all IoT solutions and data collected throughout
the different projects tested in the city, with
the main goal of supporting open standards
capable of integrating the several solutions
from the different vendors and not being
dependent on only one.
As Filipe Araújo, head of the Innovation and
Environment Councils of Porto’s municipality,
explained, “to integrate several solutions from
different companies without having open
standards would not be possible”. Thus, in
the beginning of 2015, Porto city adopted
FIWARE (a worldwide open-source community,
bootstrapped by the EU) standards, becoming
capable of storing and sharing the data
received (about traffic, air quality, atmospheric
conditions, transportation flows, among others)
from the different providers in a harmonised
and interoperable way. In addition, it was able
to provide Open APIs for software developers,
management tools for city officers as well as
live dashboards and apps for citizens. This was
the perfect opportunity for companies with
smart solutions to improve this ecosystem
created by the city of Porto, since data from
different sources could now be seamlessly
correlated and integrated thanks to FIWARE.
Citibrain seized the opportunity and provided
the city with its Smart Air Quality solution, with
both air quality stations and a SaaS (Software-
as-a-service) web platform. However, it was
not only a stationary way of monitoring air
quality, it was more than that. In total, 75
fixed and mobile units (i.e. installed on top of
buses) of air quality monitoring stations were
deployed. The air quality stations could collect
data regarding air quality (CO, CO2, NO2, O3,
VOCs and Particles), temperature, humidity,
luminosity and solar radiation, noise pollution,
precipitation, wind speed and direction. These
communicated through the city’s public Wi-Fi
network and were able to integrate with the
open data platform mentioned above.

The interoperability of Citibrain’s innovative
solution allowed the interaction with other
existing IoT solutions, creating a systems
network capable of monitoring and controlling
the city’s dynamics. Citibrain achieves this by
implementing the NGSI open standard, which
defines how to manage context in a Smart
City (i.e., how to publish data generated by
devices as well as how to access it and receive
notifications whenever the data is updated).
This leads to the possibility of an application’s
ecosystem developed through technological
initiatives, such as new strategies and
technological solutions in the city, linking the
Air Quality data obtained through the Smart Air
Quality system with different data from other
solutions (such as the traffic flow, geolocated
touristic events, or even for multimodal travel
planning).
By investing in this area, not only does the
City of Porto improve its image, by enhancing
its reputation as a modern and innovative
city, but it also attracts more investment
and companies. Better air quality leads to a
better quality of life, something to take into
consideration when evaluating cities by their
quality of life rankings (e.g Bloom Consulting).
Air quality monitoring in real time increases
the citizens’ awareness about the importance
of breathing clean air, helps reducing the
probability of chronical diseases and premature
deaths by leading to a change in behavior
(e.g. switching from the private car to public
transportation with the purpose of reducing
the CO2 emissions). The City Council, with
the available data and information, can adopt
environmental strategies and public policies,
in order to preserve the Planet Earth and the
city’s patrimony for future generations.
Concluding, on the one hand, Porto had now
multiple mobile units in buses, reaching and
monitoring every corner, transmitting the
results in real time to the central system.
Thus, Porto’s decision-makers could now take
immediate action to improve their city. And,
on the other hand, the project had several
advantages for Citibrain and its ecosystem.
With this deployment, the consortium proved
that its Smart Air Quality solution was at the
operational level, validating its efficiency for
the purpose. This has lead to an increase on
the technology resilience level and, in addition,
proved that the smart solution is FIWARE
compliant, something that is more and more
popular amongst municipalities and public
tenders. Furthermore, new projects always
mean new knowledge and, with this logic in
mind, Citibrain has gained a lot of expertise and
know-how.

In the 2016 Smart City Expo Barcelona,
Citibrain met a company that needed help to
update its parking monitoring system. As a
consortium with cutting-edge smart solutions,
the answer was promptly a yes. Thus, Citibrain’s
technology flew to Cape Town where a pilot
project in Steet Parking Solutions’ parking area
started.
The Smart City Expo (SCE) in Barcelona is the
most important event in the Smart City sector
and, in November of every year, companies
from all over the world join together in the
Fira Barcelona space to show their new
technological solutions, search for business
opportunities and meet new partners and/or
clients. Citibrain is a regular participant of the
SCE and just like any other company, searches
and finds new opportunities. One of them was
the exchange that happened between the
consortium and the company Street Parking
Solutions (SPS) in the edition of 2016.
Street Parking Solutions is a private parking
company based in Cape Town (South Africa)
that manages on-street and off street parking
areas, both municipal, parastatal and from
private sector organisations and serving
more than 3 million motorists annually.
Through public tenders, the company became
responsible for managing Cape Town municipal
parking. According to their website , SPS “was
the first parking management company in
Africa and one of the few in the world to install
and maintain a real-time parking management
sensor system in a major CBD (Cape Town)” .
However, the parking monitoring system used
by the company on their parking areas worked
via infrared and bluetooth and was unreliable,
inefficient and outdated. Therefore, SPS was
searching for a new technological solution that
could solve their problem and Citibrain’s Smart
Parking solution became the answer.
Citibrain’s Smart Parking solution brings
together all aspects of parking management
technology into one integrated system, from
sensor-based vehicle detection, communication
gateway, digital parking panels, kiosks for
payments, mobile applications for drivers
and an efficient parking management system.
Through the collection of key performance
indicators in real time, it gives the parking
operator access to knowledge for a better
policy and optimised management. This system
is also a simple yet robust way to provide
citizens with the location of the available
parking spaces.
In December 2016, through a pilot project,
Citibrain deployed 20 sensors using LoRa
communication protocol. The LoRa technology
is a longe range, low power wireless platform
chosen worldwide as the prevailing technology
for building IoT networks. In addition to being
easily installed, it is a secure way of transmitting
data. With the deployment of Citibrain’s
sensors with a LoRA communication protocol,
SPS’s parking monitoring system was updated
with cutting-edge technology, became more
efficient and reliable. Moreover, the data safety
increased.
With this technology deployed, the SSP had a
complete and robust solution for the updowns
of its smart parking solution previously
deployed. Citibrain proved that adaptability to
the client’s needs is one of its solutions’ strong
features. Moreover, Citibrain’s Smart Parking
solution uses the latest technology regarding
monitoring of parking areas, showing the
consortium’s innovative spirit and the care to
keep up with the latest news on the smart cities
industry.
As a final note, due to the success of this
deployment, negotiations for the increase of
the number of sensors and the number of
parking areas being monitored are underway.

THE SMART MONITORING OF
SINTRA’S PARKING AREAS
In July 2017, EMES (“Empresa Municipal de
Estacionamento de Sintra” in portuguese, the
municipal company responsible for managing
parking in the portuguese city of Sintra) felt the
need to monitor the entrance and exit of cars
in 2 of their parking areas and transmit that
information to its citizens. Citibrain, as a smart
cities specialized consortium, adapted its Smart
Traffic technology to EMES’ needs.
The portuguese city of Sintra is considered
a highly touristic city, receiving thousands
of national and international visitors every
year. In recent years, there has been a
noticeable growth in tourism demand, leading
to a mismatch between parking supply and
demand. Consequently, the mobility was
negatively affected, increasing the time to enter
the urban area and the time to find a parking
space.
In Portugal, besides the private companies
that manage parking areas and parking spaces
on-street and off-street, there are public
companies in each city operating the public
parking spaces. In Sintra, the public company
responsible is called Empresa Municipal de
Estacionamento de Sintra or just EMES.
In the middle of 2017, EMES felt it was time to
deploy technology that would help to better
manage two of their parking areas in the
portuguese city and make the information,
regarding free parking spaces, available to
citizens. Subsequently, redirecting traffic to the
parking area where available parking spaces
could be found, avoiding traffic congestion. The
main goal was to better monitor and manage
their parking spaces.
Although Citibrain has a Smart Parking solution
available, what was needed was a way to
control entries and exits of vehicles in the two
parking areas and transmit that information
to citizens. In other words, a technology that
would allow monitoring how many cars enter
and leave the parking areas but also inform
citizens across the city about their occupancy.
To meet this requirements, Citibrain decided
that adapting its Smart Traffic solution to the
needs of its client would be more effective.
In its essence, Citibrain’s Smart Traffic solution
is an intelligent, adaptive and non-invasive
way to manage and redirect traffic and, in
this adaptation, control the entry and exit
of vehicles in a parking area and collect
performance indicators, translating them into
knowledge. It is composed by sensors (to
detect vehicles passing by with high versatility,
scalability and flexibility), communication
gateways (responsible for the connection
between communication) and repeaters
(responsible for the system interoperability,
carrying the signal from the sensors
to the gateway). The smart solution allows
the interaction with vertical road signs and
information panels installed at critical points.
In addition, s olar panels will be integrated in
the components, making electricity sources
unnecessary and giving it autonomy.

The management platform associated analyzes
the data collected by the sensors and makes
available all the information required by the
parking area operator through metrics and
parameters, generating reports (i.e daily,
weekly, monthly...) that will help him to better
understand the behavior of the system and
all its participants. The platform is divided into
sections: map (to visualize the place where
the sensors are installed and the current
number of vehicles in the parking area), assets
management (for a customized management),
events management (monitoring the time
of entry and exit of vehicles) and occupation
report (capable of generating reports and
statistics based on all the information collected
until that specific moment). As previously
mentioned, EMES wanted to integrate
Citibrain’s technology in two of their parking
areas, parking area 1 and parking area 2, each
one of them with their particularities which the
Smart Traffic solution had to adapt to.
PARKING AREA 1
In order to be able to monitor the entry
and exit of vehicles as foreseen in Image 1,
it was necessary to use magnetic sensors
capable of detecting vehicles passing
by and repeaters to carry the signal to
the gateway(responsible of transmitting
the collected data through and from the
repeaters to the management platform).
Subsequently, the information collected
will be available, through WEB interfaces,
generating reportings according to the
selected metrics.
Due to the sensors only having a range
of 20 meters (as seen in Image 1), the
installation of a repeater between each
sensor (entries and exits) and gateway,
located in each strategic location, is planned.
Equipments to be installed in each one
of the Points 1 and 3: 2 sensors (1 in each
way): 1 repeater; 1 autonomous power
supply kit for the repeater; 1 tube for
installation, attachment and support of the
repeater.
Equipments t be installed in Point 2:
1 gateway; 1 autonomous power supply
kit or the gateway; 1 tube for installation,
attachment and support of the gateway.
PARKING AREA 2
Unlike what is described for Parking Area 1,
in Parking Area 2 won’t be necessary the use
of
repeaters since the distance between
sensors and gateway is not enough to
justify that need. Ergo, the system will work
perfectly without this component.
Moreover, since Parking Area 2 only has one
entry and exit point, only 2 sensors with a 3
meters distance between each other, will be
installed (in order to be clear the direction of
the vehicle circulates). In addition, 1 gateway
will be installed, placed in a strategic location
(to be defined) and capable of sending the
data collected to the data management
platform.
Equipments to be installed in Point 4: 2
sensors in the same route, since the entry
and exit of vehicles is through the same
route (in order to be clear the direction the
vehicles circulate); 1 gateway; 1 autonomous
power supply kit for the gateway; 1 tube for
installation, attachment and support of the
gateway.
The information presented above represents
Citibrain’s plan and proposal for the EMES’ two
parking areas. Regarding the digital panels, the
proposal included six, placed throughout the
city of Sintra. However, EMES intention would
be to only apply this component in the future.
The value added to a city by a smart solution
is parallel to how efficiently it adapts to its
needs. Technology is a tool that needs to be
shaped to cities and citizens’ needs. The Smart
Traffic solution allows for a better policy and
optimised management, decreasing parking
operations costs, traffic congestion and
pollution peaks. It is also a simple yet robust
way to provide citizens with the location of the
available parking spaces, supporting urban
planning and improving quality of life.
Although this project is yet a soon-to-be reality,
it shows the flexibility and adaptability of
Citibrain’s smart solutions. Additionally, new
and different projects always bring in new
knowledge and expertise, no matter where it is.
Thus, Citibrain’s ecosystem is enriched by this
experience.

MEET SMART PAYT: TRANSFORMING
YOUR WASTE IN MONEY!
In September 2016, Aveiro city became one of the main stages for an
innovative European project called Life PAYT. Citibrain, together with the
Municipality of Aveiro and the University of Aveiro, made it all a reality
by joining forces and applying advanced technology to regular urban
waste containers, making them capable of monitoring the waste quantity
deposited by a family unit as well as identify who deposited it.
The LIFE PAYT Project – a tool to reduce waste
in South Europe – cofinanced by the European
Commission, was born in September of
2016. With a 40 month timeline, its main goal
is to support municipalities adopting PAYT
(pay-as-you-throw) waste fees, encouraging
and motivating the prevention and sorting
of urban waste and contributing to a better
management of the European resources
and deployment of environmental strategies.
LIFE PAYT was deployed in five southern EU
municipalities: Lisbon, Condeixa and Aveiro
(Portugal), Vrilissia (Greece) and Larnaka
(Cyprus).
In order to implement the project in the city of
Aveiro – a medium size Portuguese city with
approximately 62.000 people – the Municipality
of Aveiro invited certain companies to present
their technological solutions, being Citibrain
one of them. As a consortium focused on
the development of smart solutions in the
environment and mobility sectors, Citibrain
accepted the challenge and adapted its
Smart Waste solution to the Municipality’s
requirements. Hard work pays off and Citibrain
was the entity chosen. Thus, in March 2017 the
conversations between the consortium and
the Municipality of Aveiro started and around
the middle of May, the proposal was officially
approved.
THE SMART PAYT
SOLUTION
As mentioned before, Citibrain adapted its
Smart Waste solution to meet the Municipality
of Aveiro’s requirements. In its essence,
the Smart Waste solution is composed by
ultrasonic sensors that monitors and sends
the information about the container filling
level to the central system, which is available
in the management platform associated. Thus,
maintaining a tight control on the container’s
state, increasing the efficiency and efficacy of
the urban waste team. The smart solution’s
software, a management platform, allows the
creation of multiple profiles and permission
levels, optimizing the collection routes,
configuring alerts and giving access to the
collected data statistical analysis and gains
measurement.
However, this is the basic explanation of what
Citibrain’s Smart Waste is. The solution can
also be adapted to meet the client’s needs and
desires, since there are several ways to achieve
this technology’s main goal, the urban waste
management. Therefore, by maintaining the
software as the central piece, the hardware can
change according to the use that is destined
for and give it more ends, for example:
promote recycling or reducing the urban waste
generated by each family unit.
In the Smart PAYT’s case, the solution is
composed by RFID readers as its hardware
component. Regarding the software
component, it is mandatory to explain that
there are two platforms involved: the Smart
Waste solution’s management platform and the
University of Aveiro’s management platform.
The first one’s purpose is to serve as a type
of server, where the information collected by
the hardware component is sent and stored,
going through a simple process of filtering
and analysis. From here, the information is
sent to the second management platform, its
final destination. This process is justified by
the fact that Citibrain’s components work and
communicate better between themselves.
Concerning the containers, Citibrain partnered
up with OVO Solutions to supply the containers
due to them being the best in the market,
their efficiency and their containers’ resistant
material that result in a long-term product
and the possibility of integrating different
types of communication. Regarding the
RFID identification cards, Citibrain added
this component to the proposal sent to
the Municipality of Aveiro since is part of
the consortium’s strategy to provide more
complete solutions, in addition to the sensor.

  • 4. MESSAGE FROM THE CEO 2017 was a great year, since it was the year in which we celebrated our 10th anniversary. As this is a very important mark we took some time to analyse all the goals we have achieved and all the lessons we learned on a daily basis in order to improve our performance. In 10 years we were able to establish strategically located offices in Aveiro, São João da Madeira, Coimbra, Porto and Lisboa. We also invested in creating solid and trustworthy relationships with customers that can only be built over time. Focussing on Smart Cities, Tailor-made, and Telecom and Future Internet sectors, we have come a long way and achieved remarkable and outstanding results that will, indeed, improve the life of the next generations. These projects lead us to believe that Ubiwhere is truly striving to make a difference. It must be said that this has only been possible due to the dedication of all the collaborators that have worked alongside us in the last 10 years and that have given their best in their field of expertise day after day. There is no doubt that their emphasis on working as a team, from developers to marketeers, designers and business developers, has made all the difference to reaching innovative answers. They are eager to develop, innovate, research, use their creativity and to improve. We believe that we are on the right track to creating wonderful solutions and to continue to grow solidly and successfully.   • 5. Ubiwhere was born in 2007. We started by being a group of focused professionals passionate about technology, internet, informatics and computers. We always wanted to work for futuristic realities and suit the future. We believed in meaningful days and we were sure that our work could contribute to a better tomorrow. So we started to think about ways to apply our knowledge, to put it at society’s disposal, and more than helping the everyday life, we wanted to assure the future of the generations that were yet to come. We tried to identify what was not so well in our city, and with that a new challenge arose - we set off on the smart cities journey. We actually started very small, but always aimed very high. Now we are a Portuguese Research and Development SME focused on Smart Cities, Telecommunications and Tailor- Made projects, working for and with all parts of the world and growing every day. We develop user-centered software solutions. Our main goal is to research and develop powerful solutions and to create valuable intellectual property internally and for our clients, in order to be an international reference in the sectors in which we operate. Regarding the Smart Cities sector, interoperability, Open Data and smart cloud- based services are vital. Our telecom and Future Internet also offers great variety, with areas like QoS (Quality of Service), Networking Convergence and Future Internet Services (NFVs). We also work with prestigious entities like SONAE, PT Inovação, and the National Government, among others. Besides this, Ubiwhere cooperates with leading national and international technology companies which value our partnership and recognize the company’s large-scale contribution to their creative and innovative projects. Our company maintains a long-life commitment to ensure the best practices in quality management, holding the ISO9001 and CMMI Level 3 Certifications. Our multi-faced team truly like to work with us. They are creative, innovative and have an entrepreneurial spirit. Every day our collaborators work to deliver the solutions that our clients need. RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT At Ubiwhere we are very aware of the importance of the environment and the threats that technology and industry may pose if these issues are left unconsidered. We believe our job has great impact on this aspect. We want to provide great conditions for our employees without harming the environment. We ensure a safe and healthy environment where our ecological footprint is minimized. To do so, we try to reduce the amount of energy and water as much as possible, our waste materials are recycled and cleaning components are as environmentally friendly as possible. Moreover, we distribute our software electronically, we try to print the least we can, and opt for digital files, emails, phone and conference calls. We also try to perform our business electronically, using web-based product demonstration and we take pride and appreciate the green spaces in our premises. We aim to review our environmental policy at least on an annual basis to improve our performance and quality.   • 7. NEW OFFICE Clean, minimalist and sunny are the words that most define Ubiwhere’s new offices. Inaugurated in October 2017, the new Headquarters and R&D Center are brand new and full of light. We are very proud of our new home, that we believe that has brought a new energy and a more welcoming workplace environment. The new premises, with a simple and open space design, ease the communication between each department and among the different departments. Our new office has proven to bring more energy and motivation to the company. It’s a cozy and energetic place that promotes creativity and where people like to be and work. In the city center of Aveiro, right next to the train station, the University of Aveiro and our main partners, our new space has certainly refreshed our team, our business, our future. It certainly was a remarkable and memorable day where we were able to share some quality time with great people and celebrate our success. Ubiwhere is proud to have inaugurated the Headquarters and R&D Center. We are very happy with our premises that are brand new and full of light. The simple and open space design has brought a lighter and more welcoming workplace environment.   • 8. On October 12, Ubiwhere opened the doors of its new home, where the New Offices’ Official Inauguration and to its first Open Day occurred. In a ceremony chaired by the European Commissioner Carlos Moedas, hundreds of people were present, including employees, clients, partners and friends, highlighting the presence of the Mayor of Aveiro, Eng. Ribau Esteves; the Rector of the University of Aveiro, Professor Manuel Assunção and Professor Ana Abrunhosa, President of CCDR-C. In the year of the celebration of its 10th Anniversary, the technology company focused on smart cities and telecommunications inaugurated its Headquarters and R&I Center. In addition to the inaugural ceremony, Ubiwhere presented, on its first Open Day, OFFICIAL INAUGURATION & BUSINESS GALA DINNER some of its main R&I projects and solutions in the areas in which it operates. At the same time, the PROEF Group and EFACEC also presented the 20M€ “New Ideas” Fund, to invest in the smart cities, telecommunications and energy sectors. It certainly was a remarkable and memorable day where we were able to share some quality time with great people and celebrate our success. Finished the Official Inauguration and Open Day, Ubiwhere had also a Business Gala Dinner with some of its main clients and partners. This was an event where we can be closer to the persons that contribute towards to our progress and success, sharing our past and talking about a promising future together. The common vision is now enriched by the complementary valences of each company, thus giving response to the new challenges that the market brings. Focused on Research and Innovation of software-based solutions in the areas of Smart Cities, Telecommunications and Internet of the Future, Ubiwhere takes a significant step in its history with the integration in Proef Group. The know- how of this technological company, allied to the business ecosystem and the strong international presence of the Proef Group, potentiates the creation of competitive synergies and differentials in the various sectors in its activity is carried out. In highly demanding and competitive markets, this new partnership arises in the scope of Proef Group’s bet in key areas such as, IT and telecommunications, in order to maximize the offer of integrated solutions to its clients, reinforcing the degree of differentiation, innovation, quality and rigour.   • 14. AVEIRO Our headquarters have been in Aveiro since our beginning in September, 2007. We believe that Aveiro is the ideal place for our headquarters. In fact, the city is well known in the technological field, and has many opportunities to explore. In Aveiro we can find institutions such as the Institute of Telecommunications of Aveiro pole, the headquarters of PT Inovação SA and Nokia Siemens Networks pole. It is also a great place to establish good and long lasting strategic partnerships and synergies. We like to stay in touch with talents from the university and work alongside with motivated people with entrepreneurial spirit. In this way, the support of the Unit of Technology Transfer from University of Aveiro and the University of Aveiro Business Incubator (IEUA) was very important. COIMBRA We have had an office in Coimbra since 2013. Our office is in Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN), an institution that, in 2010 was awarded the best business incubator in the world. This was important while choosing the location of the office. Another important aspect had to do with the proximity to the University of Coimbra and its transfer of technology. We believe in the potential of motivated students and in young and outstanding talent. Coimbra is also close to some of our good partners. The industrial pole was also important while making our decision. In 2016, with the entrance of new elements in the team, we also increased our offices in IPN. This office is focused on developing and providing the best solutions and works directly with our headquarters and R&D Center, in Aveiro. PORTO Since we belong to Proef Group, we also have the opportunity to share their offices, in Porto and Lisboa. Situated on the slopes of the Douro River, the city of Porto has become a technological reference worldwide. The quality of human resources trained at the University of Porto, the innovation ecosystem, with particular emphasis on the role of UPTEC, and the positioning of the city as a launching platform for other markets add three factors of attractiveness to national and international stakeholders. A unique combination of people, services and business environment of Porto is a great competitive advantage. LISBOA Lisbon is turning into the technological capital of Europe and has become a major center for innovation and technology, for the scientific capacity, and for the entire business environment it holds. The city has an increasingly rich and complete business network with the installation of many technology companies, which join companies that have a strong presence in the city or that are in the process of strengthening their operations such as IBM, Vodafone, Portugal Telecom, Microsoft, among others. PARIS (EU PRESENCE) Besides being the French capital, Paris is the economic and commercial capital of France, where Stock Exchange and finance businesses are concentrated. SELFNET - H2020 CO-FUNDED: The proposed SELFNET project will design and implement an autonomic network management framework to achieve self organizing capabilities in managing network infrastructures by automatically detecting and mitigating a range of common network problems that are currently still being manually addressed by network operators, thereby significantly reducing operational costs and improving user experience. SELFNET explores a smart integration of state-of-the-art technologies in Software-Defined Networks (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Self-Organizing Networks (SON), Cloud computing, Artificial intelligence, Quality of Experience (QoE) and Next- generation networking to provide a novel intelligent network management framework that is capable of assisting network operators in key management tasks: automated network monitoring by the automatic deployment of NFV applications to facilitate system-wide awareness of Health of Network metrics to have more direct and precise knowledge about the real status of the network; autonomic network maintenance by defining high-level tactical measures and enabling autonomic corrective and preventive actions against existing or potential network problems. SELFNET is driven by use cases designed to address major network management problems including Self-protection capabilities against distributed cyber-attacks, Self-healing capabilities against network failures, and Self-optimization to dynamically improve the performance of the network and the QoE of the users. SELFNET is designed within this economic and business context to substantially reduce operational costs of network operators by automating a significant number of current labour-intensive network management tasks. UMETER Customer Self-care and Administration Web platform: Access profiles - we can outline differential profiles of users; User connection history - KPI; Comparison - between customers’ Internet connections and equivalent ISP services in their area; Proprietary mechanism to identify the uniqueness of an Internet access; Statistical reports; Available in different ways - The app is available whether for desktop (Windows, MAC OS and Linux) or for mobile devices (Android and iOS). Measure of the following network indicators: Latency, jitter (packet delay variation) and pack loss; Download/upload speed; Net neutrality; Traffic shaping; Web page access and load time. This is a Quality of Service (QoS) measurement System for internet access provided by an ISP in a region or country. On the one hand, users can compare their aggregated results with the ones from the street, city or country (because we are offering crowdsourcing data) and with this, they can analyse the quality they are actually having. On the other hand, telecom’s regulators can evaluate the quality of service that the ISP is proving which foments competitiveness in the internet area and contributes to an increase of quality of the service. CO-FUNDED: NET.MEDE PRO This platform monitors the quality of service for the internet access that an ISP provides in a region or country but it does this based on a system of open participation which is able to extract metrics based on a set of tests performed by the end-users in residential environments. The platform gives customers what we think they want, the possibility to evaluate in a simple, safe and accurate way, a set of technical parameters related to the service provided by the end-user ISP. So customers get to know the real speed of internet connection in their PC, smartphones or tablets. They can also check their history of conducted tests and then they can analyse if the operator is really providing the accorded internet speed by comparing the agreed speed with the obtained results. With this, the NET.mede Pro ensures that companies provide services that fulfil at least the minimal requirements in terms of quality and monitoring of signal. Moreover, it promotes increasingly better levels of internet quality and stimulates competitiveness among internet providers.   • 18. SONATA - H2020 (Service Programming and Orchestration for Virtualized Software Networks Project) We believe we are working for the next generation of communication network and services. This is an open source project, so we think that the sharing of information will lead us to achieve better results. In this line of thought, this EU-funded project, which now has 2 years (began in July, 2015), counts with the help of extremely qualified people. 15 partners from all sorts of expertise - telecom operators, manufactures, system integrators, service providers, SME developers, research and academic institutes (such as ATOS Spain SA, Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo S.A.U., PT Inovação e Sistemas SA, British Telecom PLC, NEC Europe Ltd, iMinds VZW, Thales Communications and Security SAS, and many other renowned companies in Europe) - give their best every day to achieve flexible programmability of 5G network, a revolution that is becoming a reality. The project is trying to give an adequate answer to some complex challenges regarding the development and deployment of the complex services envisioned for 5G networks and empowered by the SDN (Software Defined Networking) and NFV (Network Function Virtualization) technologies. SONATA is focused on virtualized function networks. The intention is to enable both the telecom operators and the vendors to do flexible programmability of the networks and help to deploy and orchestrate new services in the network. So it targets both the flexible programmability of software networks and the optimization of their deployments. The project will support network function chaining and orchestration, make service platforms modular and easier to customize to the needs of different service providers, and introduce a specialized DevOps model for supporting developers. The project has 3 mains goals: 1. Provide an NAV enabled SDK; 2. Monitor what is going on in the infrastructure; 3. Support and extend the DevOps models. Regarding the first listed goal, we aim to provide developers with a set of tools and, with this, to ease their work. By doing so, they will be able to create and edit a network service and even test it, whether it is in a local environment or in an emulator. So, it will be possible to create a package of this network service. We will also have a service platform. This platform will be responsible for the deployment of this network service. The platform will have an open manual framework that is modular. This is great because it will allow us to have control of the placement, of the execution and of the life cycle of different BNF. With this we will be able to achieve a remarkable goal and to monitor everything that is happening in the infrastructure. Going a bit further we can also think about our third, and very important goal. This will allow us to support and extend the DevOps models. With this project we are considering both parts - developers and the operational people. From our point of view, this holistic view is important. We believe that this is a way to help society.   • 19. We want to develop a real time radio electric spectrum monitoring system which is able to monitor 90% of wireless communications. The aim of this project is to build a low cost probe which is able to measure the broadest band possible, including bands from 30MHz to 6GHz (UHF and micro-waves). The probe should be capable of being seamlessly integrated into a mechanical structure that ensures easy installation in both urban and rural environments with concerns about its visual impact as well as vandalism. This is a R&D co-funded project that counts with Ubiwhere, Wavecom and IT - Institute of Telecommunication. Together, the three companies form a consortium and each one gives their contribution in their area of expertise. Ubiwhere is the main responsible team for the specification, development and testing of Widemonitor’s central service solution both backend and frontend components. The idea of this project is to develop a cloud based centralized system that gathers measurements from probes and provides an extensive set of statistics, graphs and reports. From the centralized system, authorized users are able to configure all probes without having to physically visit each probe’s location. It will allow: - High availability; - Data exportation; - Complex event processing features; - Permission management; - Quality of signal features; - Probe configuration; - Probe provisioning. We identified that there was a need for higher spatial resolution in the spectral monitoring. The area of coverage at high frequencies are communications. They are making increasing spectral reuse and channel with a high density of radio transmitters. This means that any monitoring system makes available spectrum probes, installed in large quantities, in a tight space matrix. While this happens system costs (prices per probe) are compatible with the budgets of regulatory and supervisory bodies. The measurements that are collected are then stored stored in a centralized, multi-tenant with high availability and able to handle high volumes of statistical data, enabling: sorting, searching, graphs, statistics and alerts. The regulator must have an effective intelligence on the collected data. WIDEMONITOR It is important that these parameters and measurements collected are easy, economic and safe, using the internet and ensuring the security of data sent. On the other hand, the operational management of remote devices, for support and maintenance has to be simple and fluid because we are doing this for people. We also want the measurement bandwidth to be as broad as possible. We are working so it covers bands from 30 MHz to 6GHz (UHF and microwave), more relevant in wireless emissions. Moreover, it should also allow people to monitor network with high spatial resolution. This allows one to identify and measure emissions that mitigate a lot from distance, preventing its monitoring of otherwise than in proximity. Another important aspect is that the probes are easy to install in several scenarios: urban, semi-urban or rural, a logic of monolithic installation, not dependent on the existence of utility power distribution and characteristics that minimise vandalism or theft.   • 20. The world faced some huge developments and our digital footprint is becoming bigger and bigger everyday. It is now possible to find out a lot about people’s personal life, track them, know what they like, where they live, their secret passwords, information about their families and even more personal details. People are losing the private part of their “personal” lives and becoming a file stored somewhere they don’t even dream about. The data that is stolen isn’t always related to people but also about companies. Of course, money continues to have major importance in the world. In fact, only by analysing the US case, companies suffer annual losses of more than 525 million US dollars due to cyber crime. One can steal thousands of dollars without even leaving the bed. It is known that cybercrime is a threat that aims to reach not only the economy but also society all over the world. We ought to ensure that safeness and security of services, infrastructures, information (among which we can find personal and sensitive data) and, most of all, of people is guaranteed. Therefore, cybercrime is the core concern of this project. This European R&D project, co-funded by SHIELD - H2020 EC under GA 700199, counts with the help of the most competent professionals from the consortium of 12 focused companies from a wide variety of countries. These companies realised that there was a lack of open-source tools for cyber security, leveraging massive analytics capabilities. Moreover, a huge momentum of open technologies for big data was becoming a reality. Expensive and specialized hardware for information security (high CAPEX) was also required and the emergence of “security as-a-service” paradigm, based on cloud and NFV led to the need of a specialized team. SHIELD arised on the huge momentum of Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV), as currently standardised by ETSI, in order to virtualise security appliances into virtual Network Security Functions (vNSFs), to be instantiated within the network infrastructure using NFV technologies and concepts, effectively monitoring and filtering network traffic in a distributed manner. SHIELD’s team had trusted computing skills, and ability to deal with big data analysis and network functions virtualization. So the consortium emerged with the idea of presenting to the world security as a service and based on network functions virtualization. SHIELD project proposes an universal solution for dynamically establishing and deploying virtual security infrastructures into ISP and corporate networks. These virtualized network security functions (vNSFs) are instantiated within the network infrastructure in order to effectively monitor and filter network traffic in a distributed manner.   • 21. The world faced some changes and we can see many differences when compared with the early 90’s. Introduced in the 1980’s, the world faced an interesting and brand-new reality - the existence of wireless telephone technology, mobile communications. The first generation (1G) was able to make voice calls in one country. The 1G network used analog signal and had access to speed up to 2.4kbps. It was a revolution to the world. But evolution continued and the second generation was able to send text messages between two cellular devices. The third generation was thrilled with the introduction of a new function on their mobiles - people were now able to do much more than just make phone calls or text, they could browse the internet! The fourth generation was able to do all of that but, on top of this, people could also download and upload large video files without any problems. We want to continue to amaze the world and overcome their expectations. The fifth generation of wireless/mobile internet will be astonished with all the news this change represents. Texting or making phone calls (even if we are talking about video calls) is not the 5G CITY Process data close to where they are collected and minimize processing latency Offload gigabytes of network traffic from the core network Keep sensitive data inside the network itself This will facilitate a cloud-like 5G infrastructure able to support rapid, dynamic, and customisable deployment and operation of virtualized network functions (VNFs) and services, or network apps composed of those virtualized elements. A municipality will host thousands of 5G Small Cells with processing and storage capabilities and it will become itself a giant distributed cloud infrastructure, which can be seen as an open environment for service deployment. We do know we will have to face some harsh technical challenges but for that purpose we know we can count on the help of extremely competent and focused people from over 18 companies. Our goal is to maximize the ROI (return on investment) for the entire market chain. We will build and deploy a common and multi-tenant distributed cloud and radio platform for 5G neutral hosts (open access). Such collaborative effort will allow for greater synergy between telecommunication and infrastructure providers, SMEs and also municipalities, maximizing the return on investment. With its strong NFV and MEC expertise, Ubiwhere will co-design, develop and deploy the needed infrastructure and platform to showcase the technology across three different use cases deployed in Barcelona, Bristol and Lucca. main use of phones anymore. This is something that people take for granted. Customers are more demanding and they aren’t willing to wait more than 40 seconds to get the information they need. So 5G will be a revolution in that it will allow a great increase of internet speed. People will be able to download and upload ultra HD and 3D videos. This change will also allow thousands of internet-connected devices to enter to our daily world. One will be able to upgrade data connection from a garden hose to a fire hose. The difference will be astonishing. 5G City project aims to design, develop, deploy and demonstrate, in operational conditions, a distributed cloud and radio platform for municipalities and infrastructure owners acting as 5G neutral hosts. One of the paradigms that we are focused on is called edge computing. We believe that this demands extension of cloud architectures all the way to the edge of the network, close to the devices that produce and act on data.   • 22. This project is focused on maritime communications. We realized it was important to serve communities who operate in a sea environment (e.g. fisherman, sea shipping recreational craft and national marinas) with reliable and broadband connections. The digital inclusion of maritime communities is also an important aspect and can be leveraged if we try to converge with land communications. Therefore, with the support of INESCTEC, Wavecom, Centro de Investigação Naval, Compete 2020 and the European Union, we believe that this project will allow: MARECOM New MIMO communication architecture, which will take into account, specific configurations of multiple antennas adequated to the propagation of radio in the marine environment; Design and implementation of multi-band MIMO antennas, which allows the definition of a radiation diagram, adequate to the requirements of the marine environment; Development of a new access protocol adapted to these environments, foressing the sea wave movements and the maritime radio propagation conditions, in order to ensure wireless and reliable connections with high availability; Development of a new routing protocol, that allows the creation of multi- hop networks formed by fixed or mobile platforms (e.g. offshore wind generators and vessels), for a wider reach, availability and extension of the terrestrial networks; Development of applications to support the activity of maritime communities - e.g. fisherman and navy. With this, we will be able to provide maritime communications with high availability, broadband and with a low cost. In fact, cities use up to 80% of the world’s resources while occupying only 2% of the global territory. This is boosting several problems such as the difficulty on planning and managing this fast and forced urbanization, facing these scary climate changes, the lack of drinkable water, the extreme droughts and floods, and even the increasingly higher stress levels of citizens on their daily basis. As fancy as it may seem, the smart cities movement is not a luxury and not only addressed to main cities with a lot of money and population. It is about providing people with the best solutions for their daily life problems, it is about involving regular people from regular jobs and trying to understand the problems of each single one of them and provide the best solutions. It is about sustainability, it is about ensuring that we can wake up to a (better) tomorrow. We need to try to consider both parts - people’s goals and the effects these life changes have on the planet and in their lives. EMBERS (Enabling a Mobility Back-End as a Robust Service) EMBERS is an european co-funded R&D project that counts with extremely qualified experts from Ubiwhere, UPMC (Université Pierre and Marie Curie), Inria, Fraunhofer, FOKUS and Technische Universität Berlin. The plan intends to Enable a Mobility Back-End Robust Service interoperable via Open APIs using interfaces compliant to oneM2M, ETSI M2M, FIWARE NGSI and OMA LWM2M. EMBERS will bring to market a back-end for smart city mobility that is developed by a European small enterprise based upon its smart parking and smart traffic management products that two municipalities in Portugal currently deploy. The Mobility Back-end as a Service (MBaaS) replaces such all-in-one systems, in which a municipality purchases the full set of components from a single vendor. Instead, the city manager can purchase best- of-breed devices and apps developed by third parties, with the only constraint being that they interoperate with the back-end via a free, open, smart city mobility API. This domain-specific API lowers barriers to entry for app and device developers, making it easier for innovative SMEs to enter the market. Furthermore, the EMBERS will offer to firms, start-ups and freelancers the tools they need to build their business. It will provide open interfaces and simple SDKs ready to use, such as: TRAFFIC EMBERS will give you access to real-time information about the vehicles travelling the streets of your city through open M2M interfaces; PARKING EMBERS won’t let you waste time assembling a server for real-time parking events, since it provides you with standardized interfaces on Mobility data; ROUTING EMBERS will allow you to benefit from an intelligent and reliable engine that offers you the best path, based on the vehicle attributes, street properties and road events; ENVIRONMENT EMBERS will provide you access to free libraries and SDKs that allow you to readily obtain air quality measurements from your city in your new application. This project is headed to its third promising year. API is offered via a variety of generic interfaces, including oneM2M, SmartM2M, OMA LwM2M, and FIWARE NGSI. EMBERS thus clears the way for developers and to municipalities that have adopted any one of these potential emerging machine-to-machine (M2M) communication standards. Beyond its primary goal of bringing the MBaaS to market, EMBERS will stimulate development of an entire ecosystem around the MBaaS smart city mobility API. Separating out the back-end from the other components will, however, require rigorous testing. EMBERS will experiment with the system on two testbeds that are part of the FIRE+ OneLab facility: the FUSECO Playground, for M2M communications, and FIT IoT-LAB, for wireless sensor devices. EMBERS will host a hackathon and an app challenge to bring in third party developers. The project will also include three demonstrators by third parties via an open call. These activities will contribute back to FIRE+ by demonstrating successful experimentation by SMEs developing close-to-market products. The project will also conduct real world pilots in two or more cities as a final step in bringing the MBaaS to market.   • 25. SMART WATER CONSUMPTION APP The Smart Water Consumption App is a free mobile app that allows people to manage their water usage and costs. With this app families can track their water counters, get tips to use the water in a more conscious way and understand where they are spending water. In this way, families can use the app for monthly matters (water counters communication), increasing efficiency regarding water usage. Moreover, users can have access to the different components in their supplied water. Besides this, the app has a backoffice, which is very important since it allows user management. In fact, this backoffice provides KPIs with water consumption, metrics and stats about water quality, alerts about leeks and anomalies, it has a push notifications and communication section, content management and notifications regarding water management. It gives an important overview and prediction of water supply and improves water supply efficiency. Also, it is a decision helper, provides a fast response to water supply infrastructures and assures a better assets management. It permits one to integrate existing management platforms. Since it has been developed in a modularity manner, changes can be made and the solution can be adapted to specific needs. The main goal of the Smart Water Consumption App is to help customers to make efficient water consumption and its key features are: ANALYTICS Analysis of the water consumption evolution/ dashboard with daily water consumption (and the average); ALERTS Water leakage alerts; COMPARISONS Family consumptions’ comparisons with average consumption of their region; SAVING TIPS Tips for water consumption reduction; WATER QUALITY Drinking water quality and bathing water quality.   • 26. SYMBIOTE - H2020 We live in a more connected world. Smart networked devices are a very important help. For some this is even considered a basic need, as every day new apps emerge. People use them in many situations, from leisure to work, from day to day decisions to the longer term ones. The world is more and more connected and thousands of apps, focused on different purposes, can be found. However, in order to be able to have access to all of this, customers need a wide variety of apps. The current IoT ecosystem is fragmented: the series of vertical solutions that exist today and that integrate connected objects within local environments and using purpose-specific implementations, also connect smart spaces with a back-end cloud hosting dedicated often to proprietary software components. Creating a platform that adapts to the needs and places where customers are, where changing smart environments doesn’t imply using different apps and where safety and transparency is assured while using the resources across various IoT domains seems a good and important idea. Since this is a big and wide challenge, the European Union gave an incentive and gathered 14 companies, including Ubiwhere, which formed a consortium, with experts from a wide variety of fields to work in the so called “symbloTe project” (symbiosis of smart objects across IoT environments). This is an european co-funded R&D project. Ubiwhere’s contribution has been mainly focused on the Smart Mobility & Ecological Urban Routing, since we proudly are the leaders on the topic. The goal of this project is to help solve the issue of transport inefficiency and poor air quality that many European cities have. symbloTe’s primary target group are SMEs. The idea is to create a platform - only one - that would be capable of adapting itself to the smart environment, providing a faster and easier way of showing information and, above all, more organized and wider range of offers. The platform should be able to interact with nearby IoT platforms and develop cross-domain applications for third-party IoT platforms. symbloTe intends to providing a “unified view” on various platforms and their resources, so that platform resources are transparent to application designers and developers. In addition, symbIoTe also implements IoT platform federations so that they can securely interoperate, collaborate, share resources and support the migration of smart objects between various IoT domains and platforms. For this to be possible, symbIoTe will design and implement an Open Source mediation prototype. symbloTe opens up the potential for innovative business models that are incrementally deployable. Plus, it removes the strict separation between IoT islands to create an environment which has significant impact on the market, is attractive for a heterogeneous user group, matches the dynamicity of modern life and is helpful for various business, home and public infrastructure use cases. This project is now headed towards its third and last year and we believe it will have a very satisfying result.   • 27. Europe and Mexico, working side by side towards the same goal, this is what Smart SDK intends to encourage. The goal is to create a sustainable and long-lasting FIWARE ecosystem where we can identify and leverage successful FIWARE outcomes in Europe and build reference standards for common challenges. SmartSDK aims at creating a sustainable FIWARE ecosystem between Europe and Mexico by leveraging on existing FIWARE outcomes and building reference standards for common challenges. The idea is to identify successful FIWARE applications deployed in Europe. After doing so, the project should be able to establish a set of FIWARE-based reference service architectures and reference data model to support the agile development of smart solutions for sustainability challenges. In this perspective, SmartSDK will adopt existing Open Standards and Open Source solutions, leveraging on results of European and Mexican initiatives based on FIWARE. By creating a reference Software Development Kit (SDK) the project will cultivate a nice and solid collaboration between Europe and Mexico. This may be important regarding future societal and/or economical challenges. SMARTSDK - H2020 We believe that this project will ease and promote increased FIWARE adoption in Mexico. This will have wide impact in both sides. In order to achieve the best results and to insure that we truly are creating an equitative and successful ecosystem, FIWARE will evolve people, cities, innovative SMEs and startups in the process of change. By doing so, we will support the growth of new FIWARE-based businesses through the direct involvement of a network of around ICT 30 incubators and accelerators, with access to more than 1000 ICT Innovative companies and startups and the support of Wayra Mexico (owned by Telefonica), the local branch of the worldwide largest accelerator. In order to foster this vision and culture, the project counts with FIWARE partners from both sides of the ocean - Europe (TID, CREATE- NET); and Mexico (INFOTEC, ITESM).   • 28. SYNCHRONICITY - H2020 The SynchroniCity is an innovative project that intends to create a Single Digital City Market for Europe. The vision of SynchroniCity is not only to pioneer the establishment of such an environment but to pilot it in reference zones across 8 European countries addressing 3 key IoT-enabled smart city application areas. These reference zones are based on cities at the forefront of smart city development covering different geographies, cultures and sizes and include Antwerp (BE), Carouge (CH), Eindhoven (NL), Helsinki (FI), Manchester (UK), Milano (IT), Porto (PT) and Santander (ES). Globally, SynchroniCity adds committed replicating reference zones, including Léon (Mexico) and Seongnam (Korea). The project already connects 35 partners from different continents. This project counts with the solid and wide knowledge of hard-working people all over Europe, people from several initiatives (such as OASC, FIWARE, FIRE, EIPSCC) and with important partners who have leading roles in standardization bodies (like ITU, ETSI, IEEE, OMA, IETF). From this team of experts SynchroniCity will be born. SynchroniCity will provide a balanced ecosystem for IoT-enabled smart city solutions where IoT device manufacturers, system integrators and solution providers can innovate and openly compete. With an already emerging foundation, SynchroniCity will establish a reference architecture for the envisioned IoT- enabled city market place with identified interoperability points and interfaces and data models for different verticals. This will include tools for co-creation & integration of legacy platforms & IoT devices for urban services and enablers for data discovery, access and licensing lowering the barriers for participation on the market.   • 29. FIWARE FIWARE can be seen as the link between two main groups: companies and cities. Regarding cities, Open and Agile Smart Cities already include over 100 cities, spread over 22 countries. These companies, among which we can find Ubiwhere, work to make open and agile cities possible and real. The goal is to implement driven standards in smart cities. This part is focused on: - Common IPIs à FIWARE NGSI; - Platform for open data/API publication; - Standard Data Models à CitySDK and more; - Driven by implementation approach. TMForum include over 850 companies spread over 180 countries. It focuses on: - Smart City Business Requirements; - Smart City Maturity & Bench marketing models; - Smart Cities Reference Architecture; - City as a Platform supporting the Data Economy. So FIWARE comes as a link between these. FIWARE aspires to build a common space to share information and make it easier to create a holistic view. We are focused on high quality and on solid participation. It is important to use a common language because this will allow portability of solutions. The goal is to make real-time approaches possible and to understand how to do this. One key factor is the sharing of knowledge, so we need to ask ourselves, how to stimulate people to share knowledge. One suggestion that seems good is to enable data economy. Cities are doing a good job but an important question is how to execute and adopt solutions. Sharing a vision is good but it is not enough. It is extremely important to convert the vision into real execution and then assure consolidation of results. Ubiwhere’s participation in FIWARE, came, in fact, as a result of its on-going market due to our participation in other projects such as FP7 and H2020. It was a step towards consolidating and leveraging trusted technology to create interoperable, standards-based ways to unify our Smart City solutions.The project is going really well, and developers are becoming progressively more attentive. With this platform, we have access to a great deal of APIs. So, we can access many application programming interfaces, and therefore, it becomes easier to develop Smart Applications in multiple vertical sectors. This is extremely interesting because, it will be possible to access the information of the Smart Cities’ solutions and data sources evolved from one only platform. Ubiwhere contributes with a wide variety of systems for Smart Parking and Traffic Management, Smart Waste Management, and Smart Environmental Monitoring, along with its City Control Center, which allows for centralised management of the city’s ecosystem. This has allowed Ubiwhere to set up a sophisticated Smart City infrastructure powered by standards and interoperable at its core. Porto was the first challenge. As Porto is a big city in Portugal, and member of the Open and Agile Smart Cities initiative, we thought it would be a good idea to set-up the Porto Smart City Node. More projects are going to emerge from all parts of the country, but we are happy to say that Porto is now considered a Smart City and a very innovative portuguese city adopting FIWARE standards. By working together with us, Porto now has interfaces that bring access to real-time, contextual environmental data from 75 fixed and mobile units (monitoring stations) located across the city. These tools first came together in the Hackacity Porto challenge, in June 2015, and are since then an integral part of Ubiwhere’s expansion efforts throughout the country, the European continent and the world. This achievement made us be referenced as a FIWARE Smart Ciies Success Story and led to international success and recognition in events in the USA (i.e. FIWARE Mundus), Brasil (i.e. Beyond2020, Hackacity Tour) among others.   • 31. This project started with the idea of enabling tourism and ease tourists’ lives. A group of dedicated people from Ubiwhere, IDTour and University of Aveiro, formed a consortium and they are working hard in this R&I co-funded project in order to present to society a digital platform that will help them promoting and commercialise touristic experiences. Technology met many fields. It contributed to an increase of sales by eliminating queues, providing a better stock management and even allowing customers to get to know more products and promotions, encouraging them to buy in all the comfort of their homes. Technology has bond with many services, tourism is not an exception. The Statistics Portal states that in 2017 online travel sales worldwide was responsible for 629.81 billion US. dollars and the increase tendency is expected to continue. The consortium is trying to make the best of both worlds. On the one hand it is built upon new and emerging sales channels as well as with strong and highly dynamic marketing and communication techniques and tools. It counts with big data capabilities, and self-adaptive tools that continuously fit customers’ and providers’ needs by interpreting internal and external sources of data. AHRESP wants to help people being able to discover all these wonders and present to them a guide to ensure that they can make the most of their experience. We want people to get to know the wonders of our traditions and present to them the best restaurants to that end. Therefore our first goal is to present a network of portuguese restaurants in the world (not only Portugal but also other countries such as France, Spain, Brazil, Germany and UK). They should also be able to taste the delicious pastry that our country has to offer, as well as the mysterious ways to make wonderful bread. The second target is to make a gastronomic platform - taste Portugal.This will ease the food tasting contest of delicious traditional dishes such as the cheese from Serra da Estrela, Alheira or our olive oil, the gracious way to cure salt distinguished as one of the bests in the world.   • 36. PRIO APP This year, Prio app faced some changes. One of the challenges that Prio was facing regarding the gas bottles commerce was that people had some difficulties in transporting them (for example legal barriers regarding transporting gas bottles in cars), and they also found it hard to carry them into their houses. This led Ubiwhere and its partner, Prio, to focus more on the gas area. It became clearer that one of the main disadvantages of buying gas bottles was the transportation, so a new function was added to the existing app. People can now order Prio’s gas bottles in an easier and faster way. Customers can choose the gas bottle they need and they will arrive at their houses in the date and time they want. To do so, customers don’t even have to leave their houses, they just need to open the app and submit the order. This will promote the acquisition of more gas bottles and also instigate the buying of bigger size bottles. It will also contribute to an increase of the revenues and of the notoriety to the brand. With a friendly mobile app, Prio will be able to answer its customers requests in an easier and quicker way and customers will be more pleased since they will save time, money and ensure their comfort and the good quality of the products. SWISSHEAR UC-TIME SwissHear is applicable to many practical situations - watching TV, in the workplace, in keeping up the chatting in restaurants and cafés, in cinemas and concert hall where hearing brings pleasure. In SwissHear, the microphones and earphones of the smartphone are used to amplify low voices and decrease loud sounds, just as the healthy ear is able to do. SwissHear was created by academics of the R&D teams and software engineers whose major concern was to enhance existing hearing aids. The UC-Time system provides new tools in the time management process of Coimbra University. A PROJECT FROM A SWISS COMPANY: The system is an interface for workers and staff leaders in the time management process of UC, and the overall system management is left to the Human Resources department. The principal target of this project is to manage the time management process, facilitating registering of worktimes, holidays, days off and so on. Let us imagine a small city in Portugal with only two places to stay. Place A is extremely good, employees are super nice and polite, always trying to help clients with the best regarding places to visit, food is extremely tasteful, accommodation is very clean and so the place represent high quality. Place B is the opposite, so employees are always grumpy, they make everything hard and unpleasant, the place is not clean and food is not that good. As human beings we experience a phenomenon that psychologists entitle the fallacy of composition. So customers that visit place B will say that QUALITY the village has horrible accommodation and advise their friends not to the village. Therefore, place A will also be harmed. Bearing this in mind, and also with the knowledge that Local Accommodation is growing due to the increase of investment in the tourism area and due to successful and easy platforms like AirBnB, we want to assure the quality of the local accommodation services. It intends to promote the quality of Portugal wines internationally. Combining a creative attitude with the immense variety of terroirs, castes and blends, Portugal produces unique and distinctive wines, adding to the mission of producing’ wine, a dimension of art. With a modern design, this mobile app is user-friendly and aswers the question of customers’ needs. Each wine is produced under unique conditions. There are differences in terroirs and climatic conditions, differences in the art of making wine and, finally, differences in character and taste, which we want people to appreciate. So the platform lets you select a region and then provide customers a lack of wine options so that clients can choose either from an A to Z list or the closest production of wine and get more information about the product. By choosing a region, customers will also be able to know a bit more about the culture of the region and the history of Portugal. The platform also allows them to get more information about wine makers and wine tourism travels. Moreover people can choose wine styles, tasting rooms, and find out where to buy the wine. To do so customers have two options: the fastest way is for them to give details about their houses; the second option is more advanced simulate engine in which people should provide more specific and detailed information which characterize their consumption. So the platform will present the list of all the electricity and / or natural gas marketers registered by dgeg and providing tariffs for the residential sector. This is important because, besides contributing for well informed citizens, it will open the lack of choices that people have. The platform will also ease the process of changing. We know human tend to be adverse to changes. But even when people realize that they should change, many do not do so because it is a lot of work. Therefore the platform will ease citizens life. So, if customers want, they will be able to simulate the billings and choose the most adequate tarife to them and change companies in an easier way; or, if they already know which tarife they want, they can skip the simulation and quickly change in an easy way! Moreover the platform has tips for people to save energy, walking towards a more efficient use of energy and a sustainable environment.   • 44. CITIBRAIN: THE KEY TO SMART MONITORING PORTO AIR QUALITY In 2015, the City of Porto adopted FIWARE standards, becoming capable of collecting and aggregating data from different providers. Afterwards, Citibrain - a Portuguese consortium focused on Smart Cities solutions - deployed 75 Air Quality stations in the city, monitoring the environmental conditions in real time. As a distinctly innovative city and the hometown to a number of innovative projects aimed at unlocking the full potential of technologies in urban scenarios, Porto is part of the Open and Agile Smart Cities (OASC) initiative (according to its website, “a global initiative connecting cities, advocating de facto standards, and sharing best practices”). In the past years, Porto has been investing in an open platform to integrate all IoT solutions and data collected throughout the different projects tested in the city, with the main goal of supporting open standards capable of integrating the several solutions from the different vendors and not being dependent on only one. As Filipe Araújo, head of the Innovation and Environment Councils of Porto’s municipality, explained, “to integrate several solutions from different companies without having open standards would not be possible”. Thus, in the beginning of 2015, Porto city adopted FIWARE (a worldwide open-source community, bootstrapped by the EU) standards, becoming capable of storing and sharing the data received (about traffic, air quality, atmospheric conditions, transportation flows, among others) from the different providers in a harmonised and interoperable way. In addition, it was able to provide Open APIs for software developers, management tools for city officers as well as live dashboards and apps for citizens. This was the perfect opportunity for companies with smart solutions to improve this ecosystem created by the city of Porto, since data from different sources could now be seamlessly correlated and integrated thanks to FIWARE. Citibrain seized the opportunity and provided the city with its Smart Air Quality solution, with both air quality stations and a SaaS (Software- as-a-service) web platform. However, it was not only a stationary way of monitoring air quality, it was more than that. In total, 75 fixed and mobile units (i.e. installed on top of buses) of air quality monitoring stations were deployed. The air quality stations could collect data regarding air quality (CO, CO2, NO2, O3, VOCs and Particles), temperature, humidity, luminosity and solar radiation, noise pollution, precipitation, wind speed and direction. These communicated through the city’s public Wi-Fi network and were able to integrate with the open data platform mentioned above. Air quality monitoring station in Porto, Portugal The interoperability of Citibrain’s innovative solution allowed the interaction with other existing IoT solutions, creating a systems network capable of monitoring and controlling the city’s dynamics. Citibrain achieves this by implementing the NGSI open standard, which defines how to manage context in a Smart City (i.e., how to publish data generated by devices as well as how to access it and receive notifications whenever the data is updated). This leads to the possibility of an application’s ecosystem developed through technological initiatives, such as new strategies and technological solutions in the city, linking the Air Quality data obtained through the Smart Air Quality system with different data from other solutions (such as the traffic flow, geolocated touristic events, or even for multimodal travel planning). By investing in this area, not only does the City of Porto improve its image, by enhancing its reputation as a modern and innovative city, but it also attracts more investment and companies. Better air quality leads to a better quality of life, something to take into consideration when evaluating cities by their quality of life rankings (e.g Bloom Consulting). Air quality monitoring in real time increases the citizens’ awareness about the importance of breathing clean air, helps reducing the probability of chronical diseases and premature deaths by leading to a change in behavior (e.g. switching from the private car to public transportation with the purpose of reducing the CO2 emissions). The City Council, with the available data and information, can adopt environmental strategies and public policies, in order to preserve the Planet Earth and the city’s patrimony for future generations. Concluding, on the one hand, Porto had now multiple mobile units in buses, reaching and monitoring every corner, transmitting the results in real time to the central system. Thus, Porto’s decision-makers could now take immediate action to improve their city. And, on the other hand, the project had several advantages for Citibrain and its ecosystem. With this deployment, the consortium proved that its Smart Air Quality solution was at the operational level, validating its efficiency for the purpose. This has lead to an increase on the technology resilience level and, in addition, proved that the smart solution is FIWARE compliant, something that is more and more popular amongst municipalities and public tenders. Furthermore, new projects always mean new knowledge and, with this logic in mind, Citibrain has gained a lot of expertise and know-how.   • 45. In the 2016 Smart City Expo Barcelona, Citibrain met a company that needed help to update its parking monitoring system. As a consortium with cutting-edge smart solutions, the answer was promptly a yes. Thus, Citibrain’s technology flew to Cape Town where a pilot project in Steet Parking Solutions’ parking area started. The Smart City Expo (SCE) in Barcelona is the most important event in the Smart City sector and, in November of every year, companies from all over the world join together in the Fira Barcelona space to show their new technological solutions, search for business opportunities and meet new partners and/or clients. Citibrain is a regular participant of the SCE and just like any other company, searches and finds new opportunities. One of them was the exchange that happened between the consortium and the company Street Parking Solutions (SPS) in the edition of 2016. Street Parking Solutions is a private parking company based in Cape Town (South Africa) that manages on-street and off street parking areas, both municipal, parastatal and from private sector organisations and serving more than 3 million motorists annually. Through public tenders, the company became responsible for managing Cape Town municipal parking. According to their website , SPS “was the first parking management company in Africa and one of the few in the world to install and maintain a real-time parking management sensor system in a major CBD (Cape Town)” . However, the parking monitoring system used by the company on their parking areas worked via infrared and bluetooth and was unreliable, inefficient and outdated. Therefore, SPS was searching for a new technological solution that could solve their problem and Citibrain’s Smart Parking solution became the answer. Citibrain’s Smart Parking solution brings together all aspects of parking management technology into one integrated system, from sensor-based vehicle detection, communication gateway, digital parking panels, kiosks for payments, mobile applications for drivers and an efficient parking management system. Through the collection of key performance indicators in real time, it gives the parking operator access to knowledge for a better policy and optimised management. This system is also a simple yet robust way to provide citizens with the location of the available parking spaces. In December 2016, through a pilot project, Citibrain deployed 20 sensors using LoRa communication protocol. The LoRa technology is a longe range, low power wireless platform chosen worldwide as the prevailing technology for building IoT networks. In addition to being easily installed, it is a secure way of transmitting data. With the deployment of Citibrain’s sensors with a LoRA communication protocol, SPS’s parking monitoring system was updated with cutting-edge technology, became more efficient and reliable. Moreover, the data safety increased. With this technology deployed, the SSP had a complete and robust solution for the updowns of its smart parking solution previously deployed. Citibrain proved that adaptability to the client’s needs is one of its solutions’ strong features. Moreover, Citibrain’s Smart Parking solution uses the latest technology regarding monitoring of parking areas, showing the consortium’s innovative spirit and the care to keep up with the latest news on the smart cities industry. As a final note, due to the success of this deployment, negotiations for the increase of the number of sensors and the number of parking areas being monitored are underway. THE SMART MONITORING OF SINTRA’S PARKING AREAS In July 2017, EMES (“Empresa Municipal de Estacionamento de Sintra” in portuguese, the municipal company responsible for managing parking in the portuguese city of Sintra) felt the need to monitor the entrance and exit of cars in 2 of their parking areas and transmit that information to its citizens. Citibrain, as a smart cities specialized consortium, adapted its Smart Traffic technology to EMES’ needs. The portuguese city of Sintra is considered a highly touristic city, receiving thousands of national and international visitors every year. In recent years, there has been a noticeable growth in tourism demand, leading to a mismatch between parking supply and demand. Consequently, the mobility was negatively affected, increasing the time to enter the urban area and the time to find a parking space. In Portugal, besides the private companies that manage parking areas and parking spaces on-street and off-street, there are public companies in each city operating the public parking spaces. In Sintra, the public company responsible is called Empresa Municipal de Estacionamento de Sintra or just EMES. In the middle of 2017, EMES felt it was time to deploy technology that would help to better manage two of their parking areas in the portuguese city and make the information, regarding free parking spaces, available to citizens. Subsequently, redirecting traffic to the parking area where available parking spaces could be found, avoiding traffic congestion. The main goal was to better monitor and manage their parking spaces. Although Citibrain has a Smart Parking solution available, what was needed was a way to control entries and exits of vehicles in the two parking areas and transmit that information to citizens. In other words, a technology that would allow monitoring how many cars enter and leave the parking areas but also inform citizens across the city about their occupancy. To meet this requirements, Citibrain decided that adapting its Smart Traffic solution to the needs of its client would be more effective. In its essence, Citibrain’s Smart Traffic solution is an intelligent, adaptive and non-invasive way to manage and redirect traffic and, in this adaptation, control the entry and exit of vehicles in a parking area and collect performance indicators, translating them into knowledge. It is composed by sensors (to detect vehicles passing by with high versatility, scalability and flexibility), communication gateways (responsible for the connection between communication) and repeaters (responsible for the system interoperability, carrying the signal from the sensors to the gateway). The smart solution allows the interaction with vertical road signs and information panels installed at critical points. In addition, s olar panels will be integrated in the components, making electricity sources unnecessary and giving it autonomy. The management platform associated analyzes the data collected by the sensors and makes available all the information required by the parking area operator through metrics and parameters, generating reports (i.e daily, weekly, monthly...) that will help him to better understand the behavior of the system and all its participants. The platform is divided into sections: map (to visualize the place where the sensors are installed and the current number of vehicles in the parking area), assets management (for a customized management), events management (monitoring the time of entry and exit of vehicles) and occupation report (capable of generating reports and statistics based on all the information collected until that specific moment). As previously mentioned, EMES wanted to integrate Citibrain’s technology in two of their parking areas, parking area 1 and parking area 2, each one of them with their particularities which the Smart Traffic solution had to adapt to. PARKING AREA 1 In order to be able to monitor the entry and exit of vehicles as foreseen in Image 1, it was necessary to use magnetic sensors capable of detecting vehicles passing by and repeaters to carry the signal to the gateway(responsible of transmitting the collected data through and from the repeaters to the management platform). Subsequently, the information collected will be available, through WEB interfaces, generating reportings according to the selected metrics. Due to the sensors only having a range of 20 meters (as seen in Image 1), the installation of a repeater between each sensor (entries and exits) and gateway, located in each strategic location, is planned. Equipments to be installed in each one of the Points 1 and 3: 2 sensors (1 in each way): 1 repeater; 1 autonomous power supply kit for the repeater; 1 tube for installation, attachment and support of the repeater. Equipments t be installed in Point 2: 1 gateway; 1 autonomous power supply kit or the gateway; 1 tube for installation, attachment and support of the gateway. PARKING AREA 2 Unlike what is described for Parking Area 1, in Parking Area 2 won’t be necessary the use of repeaters since the distance between sensors and gateway is not enough to justify that need. Ergo, the system will work perfectly without this component. Moreover, since Parking Area 2 only has one entry and exit point, only 2 sensors with a 3 meters distance between each other, will be installed (in order to be clear the direction of the vehicle circulates). In addition, 1 gateway will be installed, placed in a strategic location (to be defined) and capable of sending the data collected to the data management platform. Equipments to be installed in Point 4: 2 sensors in the same route, since the entry and exit of vehicles is through the same route (in order to be clear the direction the vehicles circulate); 1 gateway; 1 autonomous power supply kit for the gateway; 1 tube for installation, attachment and support of the gateway. The information presented above represents Citibrain’s plan and proposal for the EMES’ two parking areas. Regarding the digital panels, the proposal included six, placed throughout the city of Sintra. However, EMES intention would be to only apply this component in the future. The value added to a city by a smart solution is parallel to how efficiently it adapts to its needs. Technology is a tool that needs to be shaped to cities and citizens’ needs. The Smart Traffic solution allows for a better policy and optimised management, decreasing parking operations costs, traffic congestion and pollution peaks. It is also a simple yet robust way to provide citizens with the location of the available parking spaces, supporting urban planning and improving quality of life. Although this project is yet a soon-to-be reality, it shows the flexibility and adaptability of Citibrain’s smart solutions. Additionally, new and different projects always bring in new knowledge and expertise, no matter where it is. Thus, Citibrain’s ecosystem is enriched by this experience.   • 48. MEET SMART PAYT: TRANSFORMING YOUR WASTE IN MONEY! In September 2016, Aveiro city became one of the main stages for an innovative European project called Life PAYT. Citibrain, together with the Municipality of Aveiro and the University of Aveiro, made it all a reality by joining forces and applying advanced technology to regular urban waste containers, making them capable of monitoring the waste quantity deposited by a family unit as well as identify who deposited it. The LIFE PAYT Project – a tool to reduce waste in South Europe – cofinanced by the European Commission, was born in September of 2016. With a 40 month timeline, its main goal is to support municipalities adopting PAYT (pay-as-you-throw) waste fees, encouraging and motivating the prevention and sorting of urban waste and contributing to a better management of the European resources and deployment of environmental strategies. LIFE PAYT was deployed in five southern EU municipalities: Lisbon, Condeixa and Aveiro (Portugal), Vrilissia (Greece) and Larnaka (Cyprus). In order to implement the project in the city of Aveiro – a medium size Portuguese city with approximately 62.000 people – the Municipality of Aveiro invited certain companies to present their technological solutions, being Citibrain one of them. As a consortium focused on the development of smart solutions in the environment and mobility sectors, Citibrain accepted the challenge and adapted its Smart Waste solution to the Municipality’s requirements. Hard work pays off and Citibrain was the entity chosen. Thus, in March 2017 the conversations between the consortium and the Municipality of Aveiro started and around the middle of May, the proposal was officially approved. THE SMART PAYT SOLUTION As mentioned before, Citibrain adapted its Smart Waste solution to meet the Municipality of Aveiro’s requirements. In its essence, the Smart Waste solution is composed by ultrasonic sensors that monitors and sends the information about the container filling level to the central system, which is available in the management platform associated. Thus, maintaining a tight control on the container’s state, increasing the efficiency and efficacy of the urban waste team. The smart solution’s software, a management platform, allows the creation of multiple profiles and permission levels, optimizing the collection routes, configuring alerts and giving access to the collected data statistical analysis and gains measurement. However, this is the basic explanation of what Citibrain’s Smart Waste is. The solution can also be adapted to meet the client’s needs and desires, since there are several ways to achieve this technology’s main goal, the urban waste management. Therefore, by maintaining the software as the central piece, the hardware can change according to the use that is destined for and give it more ends, for example: promote recycling or reducing the urban waste generated by each family unit. In the Smart PAYT’s case, the solution is composed by RFID readers as its hardware component. Regarding the software component, it is mandatory to explain that there are two platforms involved: the Smart Waste solution’s management platform and the University of Aveiro’s management platform. The first one’s purpose is to serve as a type of server, where the information collected by the hardware component is sent and stored, going through a simple process of filtering and analysis. From here, the information is sent to the second management platform, its final destination. This process is justified by the fact that Citibrain’s components work and communicate better between themselves. Concerning the containers, Citibrain partnered up with OVO Solutions to supply the containers due to them being the best in the market, their efficiency and their containers’ resistant material that result in a long-term product and the possibility of integrating different types of communication. Regarding the RFID identification cards, Citibrain added this component to the proposal sent to the Municipality of Aveiro since is part of the consortium’s strategy to provide more complete solutions, in addition to the sensor.
