Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929 to Jewish parents Otto and Edith Frank. After the Nazis came to power in 1933, enacting harsh anti-Semitic laws and policies, the Franks fled to Amsterdam for safety. To escape persecution, Anne and her family went into hiding in 1942 in the secret annex of Otto's business. They remained there until they were betrayed and arrested in 1944, after which Anne died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at age 15. Her diary, given to her as a gift on her 13th birthday and chronicling her time in hiding, was published after the war and brought her story to the world.
