Transpiration is the process by which plants lose water through their stomata, small pores on the underside of leaves. Water vapor is lost as part of photosynthesis where carbon dioxide and oxygen are exchanged through the stomata. The stomata open during the day for these gas exchanges and photosynthesis, but close at night to prevent water loss.
