Introduction to NodeJS
Node.js is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 engine that uses an asynchronous event-driven model making it lightweight and efficient for building scalable network applications. It is non-blocking which allows handling many requests concurrently without creating new threads. This allows Node.js applications to scale vertically and horizontally to handle increasing load. Common uses of Node.js include building highly scalable data/query intensive applications due to its non-blocking I/O model. It is not suited for applications that require blocking operations like long computations.
Memory Forensics in AWS
This short slide deck summarizes the motivation behind investing in memory forensics, the options we considered and tech stack we're using to acquire memory of an EC2 instance, and our approach to memory analysis.
Integrating GlusterFS with iSCSI Target
This document discusses integrating the GlusterFS distributed file system with iSCSI target storage. It proposes two methods: 1) Modifying the FreeBSD ISTGT driver to provide GlusterFS as a backend block device. 2) Modifying the Linux target driver to convert I/O commands into GlusterFS file operations, avoiding performance penalties from FUSE. The second method using libgfapi instead of FUSE in the Linux target driver showed a 10-20% performance improvement by removing unnecessary context switches and data copies. The document concludes that modifying the iSCSI target driver in this way effectively protects data and provides linear performance for iSCSI initiators.

Automation is key to enable our incident responders to focus on high leverage decisions, provide a consistent experience to our internal customers, and ensure our team meets the needs of a rapidly growing Netflix. The SIRT team is investing a lot of engineering resources in automating Crisis Management, Incident Response, and Digital Forensics.
The following slides summarize the reasons why we have decided to invest in these areas, the technologies that we’re using to automate and orchestrate decisions that don’t matter, and showcase some of the workflows that we have successfully automated.

One might find it ironic that some of the world's fastest supercomputers -- vast clusters capable of trillions of floating point operations per second -- can take upwards of a half an hour to reboot in between jobs. While we often talk about the density advantages of containers, it's the opposite approach that we use in the High Performance Computing world! Here, we use exactly 1 system container per node, giving it unlimited access to all of the host's CPU, Memory, Disk, IO, and Network. And yet we can still leverage the management characteristics of containers -- security, snapshots, live migration, and instant deployment to recycle each node in between jobs. In this talk, we'll examine a reference architecture and some best practices around containers in HPC environments.

Unleashing k8 s to reduce complexities of an entire middleware platform
WSO2 uses Kubernetes to provide multi-tenancy for its middleware platform. Kubernetes namespaces isolate each tenant's resources, while quotas control how much CPU and memory each tenant can use. Kubernetes also provides health monitoring, rolling updates, secret sharing between pods, and autoscaling that help reduce the complexity of WSO2's platform. WSO2's identity server integrates with Kubernetes to provide access management for tenants and users.

CERN the European Laboratory for Nuclear Research and SKA the Square Kilmeter Array are preparing the next generation of research infrastructure for the new large scale scientific instruments that will produce new magnitudes of data. In Sydney OpenStack Summit we presented the collaboration and the platform that we plan to develop for scaling science.
In this talk will present the work done related with Preemptible VMs and Containers on Baremetal.
Preemptible VMs are instances that use idle allocated resources in the infrastructure and can be terminated when this capacity is required. Containers in Baremetal eliminate the virtualization overhead enabling the container full performance required for scientific workloads.
We will present the current state, development and integration decisions and how these functionalities can be used in a common OpenStack infrastructure.

Kubernetes is an open source container cluster manager that provides workload abstractions like pods, deployments, and services. It supports multiple virtual clusters on the same physical cluster through namespaces. Key resources include secrets for storing sensitive information like TLS certificates, persistent volumes for storage, and private registries. Kubernetes can be installed on-premises or in the cloud using tools like Kops on AWS or kubeadm for laptop development.
Going Serverless
A simple traditional web application consists of a web server, web client and an optional database. A traditional software developer needs to be aware of the server in which his code runs, because it has to be created, scaled, and maintained. If it goes down at the most critical time, it could result in drastic consequences.
When a single application is deployed in a server, there will be lot of unused resources. For example, if a developer deploys a Storm cluster which uses CPU heavily for computation, there will be less use of the hard disk. These servers are not custom made for our applications so there will be resource wastages. The concept of a Serverless Architecture came up as a solution to overcome this problem and a lot of other issues coupled with physical servers. In this Innovation Session, Danula Eranjith, Malinga Perera and Shehan Perera from the Data and Analytics team discuss the Serverless Architecture concept, and how it can be implemented using AWS technologies.

Swarm
Swarm is reactive data sync middleware that uses CRDT (Commutative Replicated Data Types) to enable total caching and incremental synchronization of data across devices. It allows for real-time background syncing of versioned data while detecting new and previously seen changes, enabling offline work, caching, and prefetching. This provides a huge improvement to the user experience by eliminating loading stalls and supporting intermittent connections. While building a total caching system from scratch requires significant effort, Swarm implements CRDTs to achieve this faster than the theory is developed.
