Skiing is an Olympic winter sport performed on snow with skis, ski poles, bindings, and boots. It originated in Norway over 2500 years ago when hunters used skis to travel through snowy forests. There are various types of skiing including alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, nordic skiing, and military skiing. Alpine skiing involves sliding down snow-covered hills with fixed-heel bindings while freestyle skiing is an acrobatic style. Nordic skiing differs from alpine skiing and military skiing uses skis for mobility in snow.
